Hiya,
Hope everyone is gearing up for the holidays!
Well some time ago, I was chatting with a friend of mine who is also a devoted NHCG reader and she was like ' Dabs I have been keeping up with my moisturizing and sealing oh and I have acne on my forehead to show for it!!'

We both laughed but that statement got me thinking because I too have suffered from acne breakouts thanks to the olive, castor, coconut oils etc that I apply on my hair that eventually land on my face, clog my pores, accumulate dirt and bacteria and form a painful pimple!!

Since then I have tried a few things that have helped curb breakouts, below are a few tips you can try if your hair oils start to cause breakouts on your face...

I noticed that most times hair oils get on our faces during bed time so to avoid this from happening, try moisturizing and sealing your hair early in the evening so you give your strands a few hours to absorb the oils rather than risk having the oils fresh on your satin cap or pillow case and inevitably on your face!

Using a thick oil like Castor oil over light runny oils to seal at night can also prevent oil running down to your face.

Changing your bedding especially your pillowcase and washing your satin cap/ scarf regularly can help prevent oil accumulation.

When you first seal your hair, take your hair off your face, it's not the time to have your bangs out or leave your hair hanging all over your face, doing this will greatly increase your risk of breaking out.

Another time you stand the risk of getting hair oils on your face is after you shower and are getting dressed. Most times after dressing up, its either you makeup then face your hair or you do your hair then makeup all in one sitting in front of your dresser.

The chances of you getting acne from touching your hair and face at about the same time are high so what I do to avoid hair oils getting on my face while I dress up is, I focus on my hair first before I do my makeup. Why?

Because chances are, by the time I am done with my hair, my hands will be sooooo oily and gooey that I will have no choice but to stand up and wash them or wipe them with facial wipes giving my hands a clean and fresh start for my face. It also helps that my makeup regimen starts with cleansing my face with a facial cleanser so any hair oils that found their way on my face will be quickly wiped away before they accumulate.

I have come to the end of my post, as usual these NHCG 6inches of Growth Challenge tips/tricks posts are short and precise.
Of course these tips are solely in relation to hair oils causing acne, other tips like keeping your makeup brushes clean, avoiding oily foods, washing and exfoliating your face are general tips you can incorporate to prevent acne in general but as I be 'Hair guru' not skin guru, I go leave that side first :)
Hope the challenge is going well ladies! I am working on a Half Time meet up in June! I and you should have 3 inches longer hair by then!!

This weekend all the SHOP NHCG goodies go up on the page!! Excited!!! Till then and till my next post, have a very blessed Easter holiday!

Hiya,
How 's the weekend going? Hope all is well! Yesterday I decided to put one of the unusual hair remedies I talked about in this post to the test.

I decided to do a deep conditioning treatment with some palm oil which I warmed in a little pot;

I decided to add some other hair oils to make the mix even more potent. I added some olive oil;

Grape seed oil;

Black Castor oil;

And few drops of argan oil;

Then I added some Honey;

After mixing the potent oil mix, I had to think of a way to apply the mix without ruining my clothes. So I decided to grab a big piece of cotton wool;

Then dipped it into the oil and applied it to the roots of my hair in sections, massaging the oil mix as I went along.

For my ends I applied some hair conditioner and massaged the ends and the roots together so the oil could reach my ends also.

Covered my hair up in a shower cap for about an hour and washed it out in cool water and in the sink not the shower, wasn't about to have my body greasy from palm oil!! I was worried about the smell of the oil lingering but surprisingly after using enough of my herbal essence long term relationship conditioner the sweet smell overpowered the smell of the palm oil.

Now to the verdict; My hair feels GREAT!! As usual I am being honest! The palm oil most definitely conditioned my roots, they feel softer and so you know how much I loved this treatment, I took a picture of the hairs I shed when I combed through;

As you can see I must have shed about 7 hairs only! I stored the rest of the left over oil in a bottle, shall keep doing palm oil treatments especially when my new growth comes in! My hair is presently 7weeks post relaxer and I need all the conditioning I can get to keep my hair manageable till my next relaxer treatment.

When my hair was towel dried, moisturized and sealed, I decided to braid the ends in two pigtails  which I wore out all day :) Shout out to a reader of this blog DAMI!! Met her at the WED EXPO fair and she called out,  'Naija Hair can grow'!! I was sooo thrilled, we had a quick chat about...hair of course!!It was lovely meeting you Dami!!

Did any of you try any weekend treats?! Who is gonna join me and try some palm oil on their hair? Say I :)

Till my next post, thanks for stopping by!

Hiya,
So I was reading Linda Ikeji's blog today and stumbled on this post-READ HERE
The title was intriguing and the post itself even more so...the writer in summary was discouraging Naija ladies from wearing Indian hair extensions based on two experiences. One was an experience her sister in law had where she was complaining that her life was basically upside down lately and the writer prayed with her and the spirit revealed that it was because of the weave on her sister in laws head, the sister in law went ahead to take it off and burn it and things went back to normal.
The second more personal experience was when she bought Indian hair later on and had a spooky dream of being chased and plenty other scary things that happened...read the post for the full gist.

Now what do I think of this post? I believe it! Call me superstitious, call me a skeptic but I personally believe in dreams and God's ability to use them to reveal what we cannot see in the physical. I also watched the Chris Rock's documentary on ''Good Hair" and saw the part where the Indian ladies shaved off their hair as a sacrifice to their gods and it struck a chord in me... First thing I thought when I saw it was so the hair these ladies have offered to their gods is what we have sewn in our heads without caring the source, the incantations or other ritualistic or symbolic things they would have done to the hair before they send it off to these hair extension makers...

SOURCE

I felt my first Indian hair extension on a trip to Dubai in 2008 and was sold!! My mum and I cleared the shop but guess what I still have bundles of those extensions not because I didn't like them but because the excitement for me died down... I realized the hair was not what they had made it out to be! It shed like normal hair sheds, became limp and weighed down after applying oil sheen and worse of all was a major barrier between my fingers and my scalp so since then except for clip in extensions, I have no use for my Indian hair extensions...

But then this lady's story raises more of a general concern...it's one thing to complain about Indian hair extensions on a physical level and another thing all together to complain about it on a spiritual level. Is her dream or her sister in law's experience a peculiar family experience which they should keep to themselves as a warning for them or is it for every single lady who owns Indian hair? That's the dilemma...
You see many many years ago when I went to Uni, in my first year, every girl was wearing those colorful waist beads and I was told the beads helped enhance your shape so what did I do? I went out and got me somathat and tied them round my waist...that night while I slept I had a dream and in that dream I had huge heavy chains round my waist as I struggled to get them off I woke up...immediately my mind went to those beads and I cut them off never to wear them again no matter how in vogue they were, again in my 3rd year if I recall, my sister got a nose piercing and so we could look like the cool sisters I decided I'd get one too...after the ladies at the salon endured my screams while my nose was being pierced, few nights after-the day I decided I would take out the big earring they pierced my nose with and exchange with a cute small one with a pink stone, I had a dream and in that dream my nose ring fell out of my nose and I had a huge wound guess what? I wake in the morning and the nose ring is not on my nose...I never found it till today, luckily for me because I prayed the huge wound never happened.

So you see, to me these dreams are real but the thing I never did was to tell my friends to take out their waist beads because of my experience or my sister to takeout her nose ring...I told them the dream and left them to their convictions.

I strongly believe that everyone knows deep down when something is wrong...if her article in anyway convicts you then you might want to review your use of Indian hair however if you feel nothing then don't let anyone condemn you for using Indian extensions however as a Christian, I know that God is a jealous God and anything dedicated to another god should be off limits and is offensive to Him.

I have dragged you all through philosophy/theology class today!lol I couldnt resist :) But I'd really love to know what you all think about this topic?Are Indian hair extensions off limits because of its source?
All thoughts are welcome :)

Hiya,
Its been a min! Hope all is well ladies!
I'm Back!! And let's just say, I have been a very busy young lady! Aside from all the shopping I got myself into, taking care of a toddler is no joke, it made me truly appreciate all the help we have in Naija; the helps, drivers, gate men, cooks and stewards in our lives are worth every penny they are paid-even worth more!! Lol

All the hair products shopping I got into inspired this post as I have not done a 10 things post in ages. Basically this post should help anyone who is caught between choosing hair products while stocking up their hair product stash. I have followed these steps and they have saved me from being bankrupt over hair product buys and helped me make wise investments in recent times...read on!

1.Read Reviews; This is one of the points I have made several times on here, google is my number 1 source for any info about any product, simply type in the name of the product you are curious about and beside it type review;e.g Elasta QP olive oil and mango butter review. If the product is popular enough, you will see either good or bad reviews pop up about it, read enough to convince you on what decision to make. Another place I go to for reviews is Amazon, they have almost everything-not necessarily the best place to purchase the products because their prices are sometimes high especially when you add shipping and handling but it's the perfect place for honest reviews with the added feature of star grading;so if you see a product with 2 stars already that's a red flag, then if the reviews below further buttress the uselessness of the product, why on earth would you still go ahead and buy such a product... doing so will be making a not so wise investment!

2.Check the Source; This point is simple, every product has a source/manufacturer. If the product you are curious about comes from a trusted source or manufacturer say Silk elements, Tresemme or Soft sheen Carson's then its most likely going to be a product that has a chance because at least you know the manufacturer know what it is doing but if it's a source you have never heard about like the True Crazy Sexy Cool Curls products I reviewed few months ago HERE then you are taking more of a risk, it doesn't mean you should walk away(I didnt walk away from this product) rather you should put the other steps to the test(which I did and that informed my decision to purchase the product)

3. Read the ingredients; This is another important step I have mentioned several times. Its soooo critical to read the ingredient label and identify what works for your hair. To know what will work, simply look up the ingredients of the product you are presently using that works and have the top 5 ingredients in mind when you want to purchase a product or keep your focus on what your hair needs are; if it's protein, you want to see protein based ingredients like cholesterol, hydrogenated protein, coconut oil etc among the top ingredients on the list. If you are looking for a sealant then you need to see all the great oils like castor, olive, grapeseed, argan all up on the list.

4.Feel it; Yup open the product, if it's not sealed or it's not an online purchase and feel it! Is it thick enough? Does it have slip? Is it too oil or greasy? Just feel it and of course smell it too... Is the smell going to choke you and everyone that comes near you.. I stopped using one of profectiv's moisturizers because of the overtly strong mango smell it had that overpowered every perfume I owned! If you don't have the chance to feel/smell it, not to worry you can put the other steps to use to help you decide whether you are making a wise investment.

5. Find it's place in your hair regimen; This is a must if you want to make a wise investment...don't just buy the product because it was hyped and then end up using it just once in a year!! The only product you should buy that makes sense to use sparingly is a relaxer, all other products should fit nicely into your regimen as either moisturizers, sealants, deep conditions or hot oil treatments... It is for this reason I cannot remember when last I bought an oil sheen spray or holding spray...it just doesn't fit into my regimen, same thing with all my heat tools-they are just sitting in a drawer catching dust waiting to be used once in the bluest moon! I wish someone told me earlier that one heat tool is enough-a straightener!

6.Make a Quantity/Quality assessment; This is one point that dawned on me during this trip, It's an assessment that will save you money. The dilemma is this, would you rather purchase a huge bottle of a product that is cheap over a small size product that is expensive? I'm sure your reaction is sure! Well in some cases it's not the best decision to make. A 32oz bottle of a moisturizer that does nothing for your hair that costs $2 over an 8oz bottle of good stuff that costs $10 is a waste of your money however there are some cheap products you can get away with like conditioners used for co-washing- read this post on using cheap conditioners, ultimately though quality is always better than quantity.

7.Proportion it- Is the product proportionable ? How many uses can you get out of the product. Last week during my trip I decided to try a deep conditioner called Kera pro, it cost about $8 and guess how many uses I could get out of it?One!! By the time I used it all over my hair the tub was empty! Now that was a waste of money when I could have gotten the AS I AM co-wash conditioner and used it four times! So my advice is before you get a product consider how full your hair is and how many times you can use the product, if you can only use it just once then you need to ask if it's really worth it! That's why I love hair trigger so much I'm using the 8 oz bottle and it not even half way yet after 4 uses!!

8.Storing-check its shelf life; you don't want to buy a product that can't last at least a year! If it starts to smell funny or look funny then you just wasted your money! This point is particularly for organic products. Consider your climate, when a label says room temperature, the manufacturer from the US or UK is talking about 'their' room temperature! So if you decide that you will leave your product in a humid and hot Naija room and think ít will survive? chances are you might find mold in the product if you open it up after a week. I tend to keep such products in the fridge, it also helps that my dressing table which holds these products is right under the Air Conditioner.

9.Find a close replacement-This point goes back to point 7. If you love the way a product makes your hair feel but you don't get value for your money using the product because its so small in quantity? Work on finding a close replacement or if the product does a disappearing act on you, in shops today and disappears like the True, Crazy, Sexy, Cool curls prepoo product that Ebeanor supermarket has refused to restock, don't get stuck hoping and praying for whenever they decide to restock it, find a close replacement for the particular product and keep it moving...don't let you hair suffer because you are stuck with a brand you love but can't get!

10.Stock it up- final point goes back to point 9. When you do get the chance to get a product you know works for your hair that is hard to find..you better stock it up!! A simple past year consumption review can work to help know how many bottles you will need for the year. If you went through 3 bottles of Aphogee 2 min reconstructor conditioner last year then at least you know you need at least 3 bottles this year and when you get the chance you stock up on the 3 bottles and save yourself the stress of looking for it when you need it, well that's what I do.

That's the end of my 10 things post, hope it helps with making wise investments on hair products shopping moving forward :)

I'd like to say a huge thanks to all the ladies who patronized SHOP NHCG IMPORT WINDOW this month, your products will be here anytime from next week and the shop page will also be fully stocked, I kinda went all out this time after seeing that January's window was such a huge success and I sold out almost everything, so if you could not make an order when the window opened don't fret, I got a variety of great scarce products you just might be interested in. So just stay tuned!

In other news, how's the 6inches of growth challenge been going? I had to give my hair some styling TLC yesterday since it was in buns all through the trip, so I decided to do some bantu knots, havn't styled my hair like that in ages but I took pictures for those who want to try the style.

First I had to make my dry hair a little damp by using Tresemme's weightless foam shampoo. Any water based product is fine but don't make your hair wet...

I applied the foam to small sections of my hair from root to tip and in one direction twisted the hair as close to my roots as possible till my ends.Then wrapped the twisted hair around the base into a 'knot' and secured it with a bobby pin.

Finally I spritz the knots sparingly for extra moistness so the curls could come out more defined. Used the opportunity to oil my scalp too.

This morning, I loosened the curls, the right side had more defined curls so I decided to leave the front curls on that side out while I held the rest in a low pony tail tucked away.

Will be rocking variations of these curls for a few more days...I'm working on my protective style look book it's been ages since I had one out, so stay tuned!!

Hiya,
How's the weekend treating you all? Any weekend treats going on with you my dear readers? Well I went to a salon, I wanted to pamper my hair a little and use an actual steamer to steam it...all I can say is, things dont always go as planned *straight face*.

Before I tell you all about my experience today at the salon let me formally announce with great pleasure that the IMPORT WINDOW FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH opened yesterday, the 1st of March! Its open till the 7th of this month and if you want to get your hands on hair products that are simply unavailable in Nigeria or you want to restock on your hair product stash then this is your chance...let me be frank with you, you CANNOT be successful with a hair journey without having good products to back you! What do you think you will use to stop your hair from the dryness and breakage or what do you think can take out tangles and knots without you loosing a whole lotta hair? The answer my friends is aside from good technique- using a good product that works for your hair!! How will you know that a product will work for your hair you might ask? READ THIS POST-here and put it to the test!

Wanna know what product I recommend this month? 2 words....HAIR TRIGGER!!!

However, the great thing about the SHOP NHCG IMPORT WINDOW is that I can get any and I mean any product as long as its in the US market and let me all let you in on a little secret...Im going to be live and direct in the US of A while this window is open ( I might just be typing this from the airport waiting lounge...ya never know *wink*) and I cannot wait to personally go hair shopping...if you would rather wait till I stock up on the SHOP page that's fine too but I might not get what you want so ordering is always best though I always try to stock products high in demand...that being said, the ball is in your court, lets get this import window rolling, please visit the SHOP NHCG page for more information on how to order hair products and please give me some time to reply your emails and send invoices as I will need time to adjust and overcome jetlag... thanks in advance for your patronage ladies,till then lets get back to my salon visit!!

So, I went to a salon I have praised in a review just because I was sure of what to expect...now I guess the first time I went was a fluke or today was just not my lucky day!!I went there for a steam as I mentioned earlier, I decided to steam with the Shea moisture deep treatment masque ;

mixed with Henna, I have not used Henna in ages and thought why not, the steamer will also help with the color release and give my hair a nice red tint, I mixed the two to combat henna's drying effect on hair...everything was going okay till time came to wash my hair and roll it in rollers....Lord have mercy!!

My stylist was heavily pregnant so I dont know whether the stress of standing made her very impatient, to say the least in fact she was overwhelmed! The thing is when they see hair that is long and healthy they fail to recognize that the owner of the hair might know a thing or two about taking care of the hair to at least bring it to this point...they just think the person is lucky! of course I got asked the 'where are you from?' question again as she raked through my hair with my wide tooth comb and I just felt my hair tangling and knoting.

The time came to section and roll my hair; let me tell you my scalp still hurts from the experience!! She brought her small tooth comb out...I was like errrrrr no way! She said its my beloved comb, dont worry I will be very gentle...I didnt want to cause stress to the already looking worn out and stressed stylist so I caved in at the expense of my hair and my healthy hair journey!!!! She used that little comb in her 'gentle' way and I was squirming at the hair I saw following the comb!! Half way through I couldnt take it, I told her to please use my wide tooth comb to at least detangle first and lucky for her she obliged...

I spent my time under the dryer beating myself up for coming to the salon today, I made the attempt to look behind me at the hair I lost and lets just say it takes me about 2weeks to loose that kind of hair...Oh I forgot to add, she blamed the tangles and breaking on guess what??? TRIMMING or in salon language what she really means is cutting!! She with her scruffy, due very unkempt hair(I am not just being mean, all the stylists today at the salon had scruffy hair, its the salon tradition in these parts) told me, that she needed to give my hair a good trim and it will not tangle, I told her I trim my hair myself and I'm good for now she told me that the next time I came, I would not leave without her trimming my hair...what next time? you mean never!!

Why is it that every stylist in Naija's go to hair remedy is a 'TRIM'? What of telling the client to start a hair regimen or deep condition more often or hot oil treatments...its baffling how little they know honestly!! In my case, all she needed to do was be more gentle, the hair is long, its bound to tangle especailly at the ends and if she knew that the ends are the oldest most fragile part of the hair, there would have been a lot less hair loss but conveniently she blamed it on me needing a trim!!

About an hour later, I came out of the dryer, took my rollers off by myself, she offered to wrap my hair...emmm NO THANKS, I shook out my curls and left there ASAP never to return I don't think..though I was disappionted with the experience...my very 'untrimmed' hair according to her turned out nice, I love how the red tint from the henna shows on my hair in sun;

CAN YOU SEE THE RED TINT? Me like :)

Anyways, forgive my rant for those of you who can't relate but if you have ever had your hopes dashed by a visit to a salon where you previously enjoyed their servcie, then I am sure you can relate... for the duration of the NHCG 6 Inches challenge, I strongly doubt that I would subject my hair to any more salon treatments, I might go to profile but I will probably do my nails while I observe...today's experience was just too hard...

Till my next post, thanks as always for stopping by!
