NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW
Hiya, Like a naughty school kid, I have come to report myself to you guys*head bowed* It all started when I noticed that the very left part of my nape hair was shorter than the rest of my hair, it was just 10 inches long as at this May whereas the rest of my hair was about 15inches long, it started to bug me! Truth is, my nape hair was non existent when I started my hair journey in 2010. I had mistakenly cut it at the roots a year before while I took out a weave and it had remained short that's why I started using canesten cream.

Remember this picture from last year showing my nape hair as I talked about using canesten;

So I knew that the day would come when that part will be long enough and I'd have to get everything leveled out because that's just me, from the back you would never notice how short that hair was;

But when I put my hair to the sides, I could see it;

My dilemma was, should I wait for the hair to catch up and level out? But I had to be real with myself, the hair would never catch up because the longer part will keep getting longer...so I decided to cut 3inches off to give it a shot at catching up and level out my hair on all sides; this time around, making the decision was not as hard as in the past and I think it's because of the NHCG 6inches of growth challenge. I have never tracked my growth the way I have in this challenge and knowing that I could retain 2inches from Jan till now (just above 7inches to 9inches); Makes me confident that in just a few months I'll get my 2inches back but this time it will be on all sides finally!

So I picked my hair shears up and positioned for cutting;

And then I cut!! My hair now- the only bummer is that I am definitely not getting 6inches at the end of the year :( may be early next year- healthy shorter ends trumps lengthy stringey ends any day in my books;

I am 8weeks post relaxer this week and normally I should be gearing up for a relaxer treatment by the end of the week but not this time! I am going on the LONGEST STRETCH I have ever embarked on.....I will be waiting another 8weeks making that 16 weeks!!! The thought scares me...my longest stretch till date has been 13 weeks and my motivation was my wedding, this time I have another strong motivation but I'll keep it to myself till then :). Luckily there are no weddings, special occasions on my calendar that would tempt me to want 'em edges sleek!

  I'll take you all along with me as I stretch....stretching forces you to get to know your hair better, if you can successfully stretch your hair without any set backs, you will retain length like never before and your ends will be stronger because you will not overlap your relaxed hair when you are relaxing your roots like often inevitably happens when you just have an inch of new growth ! At the end of my stretch I hope to be back to where I was so help me God!

In other news, ladies that ordered for hair goodies last month, the first batch of goodies are HERE!!

My little helper on duty :)

I will be sorting out the orders and sending them out from this week, please be patient with me ladies as I have a lot of orders to sort through. Thanks so much for the patronage! Sadly the IMPORT WINDOWS ARE CLOSED TILL SUMMER IS OVER, I will make an announcement when they re-open!!! Thanks for all the support *HUGS*

Now back to this post, any of you stretched a relaxer treatment before? How long has been your longest stretch and how did you fair?

Please Comment below and share tips if you've got any, Lord knows I need all the tips I can get :)

Hiya,
It's been a while since I put up a 6inches of growth challenge tip post. The challenge is still on, just to recap; To qualify for participation in this challenge,

You must have taken a starting picture of your hair when you started the challenge, preferably at the beginning of the year but don't worry if you are just joining; miracles happen :)

You must have a length check t-shirt to track your progress, when the challenge is over, you will send me your start picture with the date and your finish picture.

The person closest to 6inches of growth retention(with healthy ends) will win $100 worth of imports of products of their choice, A NHCG T-shirt, and a NHCG goody bag!

There will also be Consolation prizes for ladies whose pictures have shown remarkable hair improvement. I'm excited about the outcome of this challenge and I hope as many of you out there participate ...

To help along with the challenge I have another tip-it's all about WATER the best moisturizer on earth. Below are a few DO's when it comes to incorporating water as part of your hair regimen and some DON'T'S to take note of.

Do;
Drink 8 glasses of water daily- anytime I read about water the importance of taking it in regularly is always emphasized and the golden rule is to drink 8glasses a day.
Drinking water especially when it's not ice cold has always been a problem for me, sometimes I'd drink just 1 glass of water with lunch and that's it but pregnancy changed my ways! When those headaches would come in full force and my mouth would be so dry, nobody needed to tell me to guble down a glass of water or two...these days, 9months after my baby, I am more aware of drinking water...not only does it nourish your body but it nourishes your strands from inside out and keeps them shinny and healthy! If you are like me who loves ice water and are working, constantly on the move, make sure you ice a canister of water overnight, in the morning add a little water over the ice and take it with you, if your canister is insulated, you will have ice cold water to hydrate you all day long...if you don't like the taste of water, you think it's boring? Throw in a lime/lemon wedge, mix it with healthy juice 3parts water 1part juice...just do what you need to do to gulp down 8 glasses a day :)

Add water to glycerin for a banging leave in conditioner- this is my prized concoction... I had never seen it done before I did it.
I had heard glycerin was great for hair, so I bought some but the texture just seemed really gooey and the few times I used just glycerin, my hair was weighed down. So one day I decided to mix it with water, spritz it on my new growth and was in awe of the results! My hair felt soft and moisturized especially the roots, combing was a breeze and since then I have recommended it to as many who care to listen especially Mum's who complain that their daughter's have all tangled up hair that's breaking...this all natural remedy is a winner! Remember though, the water you use to mix it should be sterilized(free from bacteria-drinking water)

Use water to dilute your favorite hair moisturizer; So if your favorite moisturizer or even hair conditioner is running out and Dab's import window has gone on hiatus *sad face* What do you do? Scoop every last bit of it, put it in a spritz bottle, mix some sterilized water in there and shake shake shake!! You will elongate the life of what's left of the product as well as put it to good use as it serves as a leave in conditioner/moisturizer and will keep your hair hydrated as well as moisturized. This tip also applies for moisturizers that are too thick in consistency.

Wet your edges lightly with water before you sleek them with gel;

This is another one of my tricks. I don't like having to deal with hard edges when I use gel because hard edges can lead to breakage especially when you want to re-style and get the gel out without washing your hair out. What I simply do is spritz a little water on the edges and then apply the gel on the slightly damp edges. The result; your edges will be sleeked down without being hard when the gel dries. Why I use water is to avoid build up, water mixed with moisturizer or glycerin and then topped with gel is like a banana split icecream...just too much!

Sparingly spritz your hair with water till its damp for easy combing and detangling; This tip is mainly for my natural sisters. I'm sure most of you know this already but for those of you still new to the game, never ever comb/detangle your locks without them being just a little damp! Especially as your hair grows longer and thicker, spritzing water or a water based detangler like my darling mane n tail detangler is a must to avoid tangles, knots and frustration!

Mix Rosewater with your shampoo; Rosewater comes with natural conditioning and moisturising properties, not only will it prevent your shampoo from stripping your hair off its natural oils. You can also mix rosewater with glycerin or fenugreek powder and apply it on your scalp to prevent dandruff.-SOURCE

Mix water with powdery products like henna, bentonite clay etc for a smooth paste and easy application; Self explanatory!if you don't want to spend your week picking out henna or clay lumps from your hair, ensure that when you concoct hair treats you incorporate water or something water based like aloe vera juice; that's why even after I have mixed an egg to henna and conditioner or mayonnaise and bentonite clay, I still add water to make sure the paste is smooth and goes on my strands smoothly without lumps, easy application means easy removal!

There are just a few Don't's to be aware of;
Please DON'T;
Comb dripping wet hair-hair is most fragile when it's wet, pull wet hair and it will snap off! To avoid that, properly towel dry your hair till its no more dripping wet, detangle gently using a detangler or leave in conditioner, my advice; though it's tempting to pass the comb through your hair over and over again when you have just towel dried it, your hair in that state is still prone to breakage, pass the comb through gently and systematically at most twice and let the hair fully air dr before you decide to comb and style it. If you must comb wet hair, comb it while the water is running over it and comb in 1 direction. So the next time you visit a salon and the salon stylist washes your hair, puts conditioner on it and brings out her comb to rake through your wet hair she has barely waited 2mins to condition, tell her ' madam abeg!! This combing is not necessary now eh, when we have towel dried the hair, you can comb'. Say nothing and watch her throw clumps of your broken hairs in the bin!

Mix water with oils-They don't mix so I don't think it's effective to dilute hair oils with water, I also don't recommend applying essential oils to wet/damp hair. If you want your strands to be properly sealed or for oils like coconut that are absorbed in, allow your hair to be dry and then apply your oils after you have moisturized your strands. Of course if you are applying the oils to your scalp it doesn't matter whether your ends are wet or dry.

Use Hard water to wash your hair; Whether water is classified as soft or hard mainly depends on what its measured calcium content is; basically, the higher the calcium content, the harder the water.My UK ladies I feel the most for you with this point because most of the water in the UK is hard. WHat happens when you wash your hair with Hard water, it leaves your hair looking  hair stringy and greasy especially when you use natural shampoos like castille soap or black soap...so while natural shampoos are recommended, with hard water its better to use shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate which reacts well under hard water conditions. Another way to remedy hard water is purchase water softeners or shower filters to soften the hard water so it would clean more effectively- Source

That's all for my Water tips ladies, I know you have already heard about most of the tips but this post is just to reinforce them.

In other news, Dab's got scissors happy and cut 3inches off of her hair...*face in palm*

Check my next post to find out why and no it's not an inverted V that caused it this time...
Thanks for stopping by ladies, hope you take on these tips... Happy growing :)

Hiya,
Its the weekend and right now I have on my foil conditioning cap with some hair trigger and Silk Elements megasilk olive moisturizing treatment for my weekend treat;

Check back to find out how my hair feels after this treat but from the slip this moisturizing treatment had, my hair was already feeling conditioned before I put my cap on, it also helped that a little went a long way!

Anyways, While I was giving my hair the treat I started thinking about what to do with it when I washed the treat out and then I remembered that the MET BALL was just few weeks ago...the theme for the gala was PUNK and I saw a few pics from the event on Fashion Police and couldn't wait to take a closer look to see if I could recreat them on my hair...I have spent the last hour looking through the different websites with MET gala pictures and have settled for the looks I love the most and have a shot at recreating, Check them out;

First off is Amanda Seyfried; Very simple and sleek half up half down look with the ends twisted in the middle...couldn't find pics of the back but I can make it work.

Next is a similar but more interesting look by Blake Lively; LOVE this, especially the way strands of her hair hold the ends and form poofs!!

 UPDATE; Sunday came around and I recreated this Blake Lively look, below is my version;

This side braided/matted down look on Cara Delevigne is really down my ally...simple but different, you know I will be donning this look any Sunday from now :)

Jessica Alba must have been reading this blog *I wish* because she styled her hair in an updo with an inverted braid at the back just like this style  recreated from fashion week;

Her Take;

LOVED how Kelly Osborne styled her Updo, really big but sleek at the same time...and that color!!just love it...not on me though!!

Speaking of color...even if its just for 1 day, I would LOVE to be as bold as Nicole Richie!!Loved her White coif...she used hair spray, so no major harm done...was glad to find that out!

The next celeb I was really feeling is Katie Holmes; The side roll was so elegant from all angles! I would be most successful at recreating this style when my hair is very due for a relaxer and thick at the base, that should help with the volume and height!

Another style I like was on J.LO...maybe its just wishful thinking but I would love to recreate this style...maybe on someone else with shorter hair up top...really loved the way the coif in front stood up like it had a life of its own-So glam!

The most intriguing hairstyle from the MET gala for me was January Jones hair style, I found myself starring at her hair for a bit, wondering what was going on from all angles, unfortunately I could only find the front/sideish views not the back view...but from what I see its a poof infront with intricate braids on the sides...me LOVE!!

Gwen Stefani also did her thing; Eventhough it looks boring from the front, I'm guessing the back has a kind of bow or something interesting...well that's what I'd do if I recreate the style.

Another boring in the front, interesting in the back look was by Carey Mulligan;

The final celeb with a hairstlye I adore is Emily Blunt!! So recreatable :) Love how the lose braid is casually but purposely placed in front, can't see the back but when I recreate this style, my braid will start from the back...Can't wait!!

Tomorrow being Sunday is poke my hair and style day LOL-remember my hair complaining HERE, So check back later tomorrow for an update on which of these hairstyles I recreated for church!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hiya,
Have you ever wondered...Has it ever crossed your mind the things your hair would say to you as you experiment and get to know it while on a hair journey? It's been a while since I goofed around here so I have decided to get into the thoughts of my hair and bring you a few things I feel it says to me...

1. Dabs why do you have me smelling like coconuts today, mangoes tommorrow, chocolate the next!

2. What's with all these gadgets you poke me with! The recent one you call the Root Only applicator,

 Its just plain scary!! How many teeths will it have now? Mtcheww

3. Ok Dabs, you cannot make me all Equal!! Arghhh when ever I see you bring out a scissors I just want to break it in two! A blunt cut is not for us, give up already!

4. I see you admiring Keri Hilson's blonde hair;

as well as Kiesha Cole's;

 Let me just tell you...'Not happening!' don't even think about frying me again with hair color!Your 2009 Blonde days ARE OVER;

5. I have a confession...I Dread Sundays!! The way you twist and turn me and poke me with pins when you are trying to do your so called 'protective styling'. It can be sooo annoying!!

6. I have to THANK YOU for sparing me the distress of those salon visits...the torture and impatience I experience at the hands of salon stylists? Let's just say I don't miss them!

7. Your weekend treats shhhhaaaaaa! Pouring eggs, milk, Palm oil and all sorts on me then you cover me up in this new foil cap...

 What's next? Are you gonna throw me into an oven and bake me?*rolling eyes*

8. In all, I really just have to say how grateful I am that I'm yours!

You finally have given me the attention I need ...I was worried for a while but now I know you love me as much as I love you, I am growing stronger each day, Skin and Nails tell me all the time how jealous they are of me...I think they need some of your attention too :)
XOXO

Hiya,
I always cannot contain my excitement when I get mails from readers telling my how helpful this blog has been to them, it's always that extra umph I need to write another post! This segment of be inspired features Izehiuwa my first Naturalista to be featured!!

You see, when I started this blog, my thing was I need to let Naija ladies know they can grow their hair!! I'm tired of people starring at my hair like I'm from Mars, I need them to know they too can have healthy hair...it really tugged at me for a while and I am soooo glad that since then this blog has been doing just that, letting people know that Naija hair can grow...I have no bias! My hair might be relaxed but the last impression I try to give is that this blog is only about relaxed hair...being relaxed is a personal style choice I have made but my gospel is the same whether you are relaxed or not your hair can grow with the tips I proffer here..and I am soooo glad that this naturalista has taken those tips on and is getting to know her hair and most importantly Making it work!!

Here is Izehiuiwa's mail to me (posted here with her permission of course ) as she tells her story from how she big chopped her healthy looking relaxed hair became natural and loves this blog :)

Hello Dabs,

My apologies for not getting back to you immediately after your last email. And many thanks for everything. You are doing such a marvellous task.

I just had to gist you about my intimacy session with KCCC (that you helped me purchase. A million THANKS)

But let me give you a brief history of my hair. I had a massive big chop in December, 2012 and I've been rocking my lovely TWA.

When my hair was relaxed, it was very thick and stubborn. Many a time, it broke combs in salons (who didn't heed to my instruction). Every month, I had to relax my hair which became dense again by the 2nd week. Mind you, I have a tender scalp. My hair would not relax but I would have a scalp that was very nicely and crisply burnt. So - called "professional salonists" helped in destroying my hair by combing it so forcefully like they were cutting a tree with cutlass. It got to an extent, I could no longer inflict self induced mental and physical pain on myself. So I cut the permed hair all off leaving like half an inch of natural hair.

IZEHIUWA'S RELAXED HAIR BEFORE THE BIG CHOP;

Now that I'm natural, I'm the extreme end of 4C hair. Yup. The very extreme. My hair has absolutely no curl definition. I think I've passed the 'Z' type as my hair is so tightly curled that it sometimes 'bends'. This time, I've drawn the battle line with my hair. I'm gonna tough it out with 'her'. I've been successful so far, but I have not been able to make my hair have curl definition.

Oh yes, I've tried ecostyler, jack5ive and a host of other gels and curl pudding. My hair has simply refused to budge. 'She' just keeps swallowing all the products while laughing at me (the owner of the hair oh).

And then I thought, "shebi KCCC can do more than other gels and curl puddings" according to you tube videos. Hence, I went harassing you for the product. When the product arrived, I danced and announced to who cared to listen that the best natural hair product just fell on my lap (not that most of the people understand sha)

Hmmm, I applied a good amount of KCCC to my hair and immediately I heard "o de shiiiii' meaning 'e no enter'. I didn't give up. I put my hair in a 2 strand twists while shouting and screaming for all the evil spirits in Lekki to relocate to the ice desert of Siberia.

I unravelled the hair the next morning with prayers on my lips; and what did I see ? My hair was just there - still no curl definition.

Do I give up? Do I buy yet another product? Do I blame boko haram for the stubbornness of my extreme 4C hair? No. Instead, I'm madly in love with my hair and I will continue to love, cherish and care for it. I will always love my natural hair no matter how it looks and no matter how it rejects products.

Thanks for indulging.

Have a lovely day.

Izehiuwa

Wow wasn't that just so inspiring!!! She had beautiful hair relaxed, has gone natural and has beautiful hair.... One thing her story highlights is this; the road to beautiful hair is NOT EASY! There are no quick fixes! You just have to make up your mind to get to know your hair, what it likes and does not like, what works and doesn't and learn along the way...no short cuts but the beautiful thing is, once you finally know what works, you are good to go for LIFE! You know you can cut your hair today and have it back to its previous length. I feel bad for people who have chosen teams and rigidly limited themselves within these teams...we can all learn from each other natural or relaxed, hair care is hair care, do it right and your hair will flourish!!
Izehiuwa I wish you all the best, you have already conquered the aspect of accepting your hair the way it is...the rest of the journey to beautiful hair which is knowing what works and what doesn't work for your hair, may have lots of twists and turns but will be sooo worth it in the end!

That's all for now ladies, in other news THE SHOP NHCG PAGE IS STOCKED! Check it out to see if there's anything you like and send me an email...I focused more on deep conditioning products this time because our Naija market has little or no options of GOOD deep condtioners for those of you who don't like to concoct like I do, I will leave the sale of oils for now to my friend's at VANITY OILS :)

Thanks for stopping by as usual!
