NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? Hope all is well at your ends! I am doing good! Here with some Savvy/Chic News!

I have mentioned on other social media outlets that we published the first edition of our Hair/beauty magazine. The original plan which we have now gone back to was to have a copy of our magazine in every single salon/beauty establishment and have it as a free subscription but then the bill came for the publishing and it was well over budget! So I reneged on my original plan and started to offer discounted subscription packages but you and I know how much better FREE sounds over DISCOUNT... After trying to get through to a few places, I have gone back to plan A and you my dear (interested) readers hopefully can help me spread the word!

Do you know that yesterday as I was pitching the subscription idea to a salon with several branches around Lagos and I think even outside Lagos, I spied with my corner eye the horror of a stylist using that blue comb we have all grown to hate to comb the relaxer through on a client's hair from her roots to are tips, ALL OVER and this didn't look like virgin hair and then and there I made the decision to go back to plan A!

The idea behind going to print media is the need for this hair information to go out! Our mothers, aunties even the stylists that don't know what reading blogs or searching the internet is all about or can't be bothered to have the information NEED the information and rely on their 'stylist' for all their hair advice yet their hair has remained the same. Our magazine is determined to fill the divide, just imagine if the lady while get her hair relaxed was reading our magazine and came across this article we did titled HAIR LINGUA;
where we defined and explained different hair terms from A-W (there are no terms for X, Y, Z that I know of), she would have come across where we defined *relaxing as;"using a lye or no-lye relaxer to permanently straighten the new grown tightly curled hair..." and that stylist would have been put straight or better still, the stylist would have read it herself and been more educated! It's the same with makeup, nails, diets all other things we discuss in the magazine- knowledge is indeed power!

So now to how I need your help, if you are in any place in Nigeria (other than Lagos island/mainland, I need agents in outskirts like Festac, Badagry) and you want to be an agent, please send me an email; Daboju@yahoo.com

As our agent you will be sent copies of every publication of our magazine to be distributed *freely* to hair/beauty establishments with a physical presence, you will submit their contact details which will be verified before which copies of our magazine will be sent to you for distribution.

You will also offer the subscribers, other subscription packages which will be disclosed when you sign our agency form and become an agent. Once any subscriber of your's takes advantage of a package, you will be automatically credited with an agency commission. It's that easy!

You will not need to do any following up, once a magazine issue is out, all you do is pick it up and deliver to every salon in sight! Even the one with the rusty, cracked ceiling with one dryer and peeled linoleum floor!

By our next edition, if you enter a salon/spa/makeup studio and do not see our magazine, please please mail me, just say I went to 'Beauty by Adepoju's salon and I didn't see a copy of savvy and chic magazine', and hopefully I'll have an agent in that town to get a copy down there ASAP...this information is for everybody and so revolution TRANSFORM SALONS has begun one magazine at a time!

I'm hopeful that you my dear readers in the 35 states; from Kano, Jos, Ebonyi, Benin, Akwa-Ibom to Bayelsa, Kastina, Niger, Nnewi... will all respond and we can start the revolution ASAP, oh if you are wondering who will cover the cost of having the magazine sent your way, don't worry it's all on me! This is my way of giving back, my own labor of love!
However the magazine will still be retailed for persons who would like to have it for personal reference so if you have an aunt, mum, sister, friend/foe you know needs the information and you've tried to get her to read this blog to no avail(the main hair article in the magazine breaks down starting a HAIR REGIMEN in simple steps and can be torn up and framed our underlined by whoever gets a copy, even the HAIR LINGUA article which we designed like a dictionary, is a great reference material, so if you'd like, you can get one for just N1000 from here; http://hairbeautyhub.com/magazine

Thanks for the usual support,ladies!! In other news, even though  I have a store with all my favorite hair products, I still get tempted once in a while to find out what's up on the shelves in good 'ol Lekki's Walmart- Ebeanor Supermarket! Today I succumbed and found this little treasure(I hope it works as good as it sounds)- Its called MERSEA DEAD SEA HAIR TREATMENT MUD MASK!
Quick run through of the ingredients that made me grab it, it has water as its first ingredients, glycerin, dead sea mud, jojoba oil, honey, Aloe extract, its also Paraben free...I am going to be trying this out for my weekend treat, I promise to keep you all posted...don't rush to get it till my review; its a little pricey considering I might just get 3 uses out of it, it better be worth it!!
Any Reader's tried this before? Feel free to let us know how you liked/or didn't like it :)

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? I am here with my first hair update for the year, I had a relaxer treatment done a day before my appearance on the Moment's with Mo show at just entering 12 weeks post relaxer. I actually wanted to get it done over the weekend and then I got the email inviting me and they specifically said please come with your natural hair! I took one good look at my new growth and said there's no way I can tame this hair, luckily I had with me a box of my beloved relaxer of all time; Silk Elements Mixed Silk relaxer;
I followed the usual steps; find them HERE, And it turned out great! 12 Weeks post meant I was supposed to have retained one and a half inches of growth since relaxing in December( the festivities didn't allow me do a hair update then) but then this is happening;

I Posted this picture on instagram the weekend before I relaxed my hair and if you take a close look, my middle back hair is acting up however not nearly as bad as in 2012!

See the V in 2012;

So I trimmed my hair a little but I am slowly coming to the conclusion that its just how my hair grows! I have ''babied'' that middle back the best I can, it just grows slower and I can't keep holding the rest of my hair back because of it, so my remedy is small trims to make the entire head of hair look presentable and that's what I did before relaxer day and here's the length I am working with now;

 As you can see, my ends are playing catch up, are the shorter ones unhealthy? NO...They are just wired to grow slower and as long as they look presentable enough I am going to exercise restraint and not give my hair a hair cut... blunt cuts are not for everybody, I will just trim as needed ( sorry it seems like I am repeating myself...Its just that I am a sucker for full sharp ends and I am struggling with my decision but I know its the only way I have a shot at fully accomplishing my 6 inches goal this year or at least coming close enough)... Just so you see that GROWTH RETENTION is the only way to longer hair (healthier hair is a result of other factors), see side by side comparisons of my hair between Sept 2013 and Feb. 2014;

I was just grazing line 9 in Sept, now I am just grazing line 11 which makes me full Bra Strap Length...my hair goal is Mid back Length-MBL that's 4/5 inches just after my bra-strap and then I am done! I will maintain the cut, not interested in waist length hair ( too much work..well not right now. I might change my mind, but I doubt it)

My edges are also doing well, you know I had a baby in August 2013, by November, my hair was in full post partum shed mode, just take a look at my edges;

NOT HAPPY!!

I have always had two thin spots on my temple region and they just got worse but with the help of none other than Jamaican Black Castor, my edges are back to normal;

I simply applied a few drops of the oil on my thinning spots and massaged every night...

So that's that with my hair, I have been having a blast meeting quite a few of you and treating your heads of hair at my appointment only salon at The Savvy & Chic Hair Beauty Hub on 34a Awolowo road, Ikoyi;

Hiya,
How's everyone doing! Hope all is well! The challenge is well on it's way. I got a relaxer treatment done last night(update coming), I should have at least an inch to an inch and half of growth and so should you if you are on the challenge and have not relaxed your hair for at least 8 weeks...

I'm here with a quick post on styling. It's an area that we tend to ignore while focusing on moisturizing, sealing and deep conditioning but I tell you, it can make or mar your hair journey. Below are a few tips I have practiced myself on styling that you might find useful especially when you are stretching a relaxer and dealing with different hair textures.

1. I never comb my hair completely dry! So it's 8 am and you are getting dressed for work, you finish with your body, face, now it's your hair's turn. Take a minute to lightly spray your hair especially at the roots from a distance say 3/4 inches  away so that the spray (can be a detangler or water/oil or glycerin mix) falls on your hair like mist-this is especially pertinent if you want to avoid your hair from frizzing up and this you should do before you comb so you help the hair glide through the comb better. Combing dry hair even if it's freshly relaxed is a No No. However if you are using a moisture based moisturizer that leaves your hair noticeably moist after you use it, then that's good enough.

2.When detangling and my hair gets stuck, I never force the comb through and I advice that you don't. It's absolutely normal for your comb to get stuck even after moisturizing and sealing, it's also normal for there to be hair left on the comb after combing but if you yank the comb through while combing especially when the comb is stuck, you have pulled out perfectly healthy hair and caused unnecessary breakage. Rather than yank the comb through when you are stuck, spritz the tangled area lightly, hold the hair just before that area with your left hand and use your right hand to gently comb through the tangles. Comb of choice? A wide tooth comb always.

3. Don't mount on gel day after day even if you use a non-alcoholic gel. I learnt this while I had my crotchet extensions in for two weeks. When I sleeked my edges with gel and the next day it needed re-sleeking and I used gel, nearing the end of the first week, my edges were not hard and dry because the gel is alcohol free but they were gooey and gummed together! The base where my braid started had already started gathering dirt... now if I kept that up for a month like some people do when they have extensions in, my edges would have been in real danger! Because they would be clogged from gathered dirt and sweat making my scalp unable to breathe. No breathing means breakage and when that happens to your edges, the dreaded receding hairline is upon you! How I remedy gel use is, when I want to reapply gel on already gelled hair, I spritz the already applied gel with water and dab it away gently with a towel until the hair is not gummy before I apply a new coat of gel. This I do normally within a two days interval.

4. Rubber bands are an absolute NO!
If you need to hold your hair in place in any way and you can't find anything to use, please leave it alone or plait the tips and tuck away or use a bobby pin but not rubber bands, they are a No because they are really elastic, thin and can easily tangle with your hair! Has your hair ever been in a fight with an elastic band? If yes, you know it's never pretty and you are bound to loose quite some hair!

5. Drastically reduce the use of heat! This can sound cliche but it's one tip that if you adhere to, will benefit your hair greatly! Using heat tools like flat irons is like ironing, it's not called a flat iron for nothing! You need to know how to use them and even then, use them sparingly. When you use a normal iron, you have to keep the iron moving, if you let the iron sit too long on what you are ironing, the heat will sear through the item and burn it. Sometimes, so you prevent mistakenly burning a dress, you sprinkle a little water on the dress or use an ironing spray...well it's no different with your hair! When you use heat, endeavor to coat your hair( not with water in this case) but with a heat protectant or oil to prevent burns and heat damage. Please freshly coat each section of hair just before you use the heat tool.

6. Naturals, try keeping your hair stretched because when it's stretched, it tangles less and is easier to comb and detangle (which should always be done while the hair is damp). I was told this by Nibi Lawson of the Kinky Apothecary blog. To help stretch your hair, you can use some thread from the roots to tips, you can do big twists or braids or you can use this really cool hair tool some of you may have heard of called curl formers;

We will have it stocked at the hub this month.

7.Styling products are NOT hair care products...what I mean is that please don't let products like heat protectants, hair glazes/edge control, anti frizz serums take the place of hair moisturizers and oil based sealants. If you are in a hurry in the morning and you just want to get out the door so you grab a styling product like a frizz serum to put your hair in place, please understand that it will do just that-put your hair in place, it will not give it any moisture or nutients/vitamins except of course it contains them. So my advice is when you come back or sometime during the day/week when you can spare some time, take out a few minutes to section your hair into small sections and pamper it with a moisturizer and an oil sealant.

With that I have come to the end of this post. I must say that the points I have made are not foreign however we need to be constantly reminded of them because again they can make or mar our chances of retaining length in 2014.

Do you have any styling guides for 2014, feel free to share below...

PS; Today was just SURREAL!! Your home girl was on the set of Moments with Mo, Nigeria's first syndicated talk show.
