NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW
Hiya,
How's everyone doing? The NHCG 6inches of growth challenge is well on its way and I'm hoping as many of you as possible have made length check tee's and are pumped for the challenge! Remember the star prize is $100 worth of hair product imports and any NHCG hair kit of your choice, plus other compensation prizes and product giveaways for those who came close to 6inches; do you know how many yummy products $100 can get you?!!
The star prize should be enough to keep you all motivated :)

Now to the topic of the day; for this challenge you have to know your oils! I get quite a few emails regularly of readers asking which oil to use, why I'm recommending a particular oil over another etc and I got inspired to write a post, as usual NHCG challenge tips/tricks posts are straight shooting and brief, this post is just on different oils that are very helpful and beneficial to hair and when to use them to ensure that your hair thrives as you aim for 6 inches this year.

So the first oil I will start with is Castor oil, I have a post dedicated to just castor oil! If you want THICKER hair then castor oil is a must have, use it directly to massage your scalp, add it to your deep conditioning treatments, mix it with lighter oils for hot oil treatments, I have tried the plain castor oil and Jamaican castor oil and I really haven't noticed a remarkable difference between the two except the color, Jamaican castor oil is darker;

 As far as I'm concerned they both get the job done!!

Grapeseed oil is a fave of mine at the moment after finding that it has ceramides which help with POROSITY CONTROL and serve as a barrier so your moisture levels stay sealed in. Its a very light oil and I find that it vanishes easily from my hair when I use it so I mix it with other light oils I will list below.

Olive oil; affordable and readily available! The extra virgin oil is most recommended for its unadultration, this oil is also light and absorbs easily into the hair strands and lays down hair cuticles nicely causing light to bounce off from your hair beautifully, so if you want SHINNIER , GLOSSY hair then make sure to use olive oil regularly as a sealant after moisturizer again on its own or mixed with other light oil like grapeseed oil or in deep conditioning treatments, since it's an affordable oil, you go ahead and use as much as you like.

Tea tree oil; Is also a light oil that is great for curbing ITCHY SCALPS! I have mentioned it before, it has a zingy scent to it that makes your scalp feel cleansed especially after a hot oil treatment because it has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities perfect if you are dealing with dandruff!
Sweet almond oil; another light oil, perfect for deep conditioning with eggs as its sweet smell makes the smell of eggs or avacadoes or any other orishirishi concoctions bearable. Almonds are also an excellent source of protein and we all know protein bonds are what make up our hair strands and when they begin to get weak, you need oils with protein that will filling in the lost protein bond albeit temporarily and add STRENGTH to your strands. Sweet almond oil is a great oil for that.

Another superb oil for STRENGTHENING is Coconut oil. This oil is also very rich in protein. It does all that I described almond oil does but also has the added benefit of being a very good moisture SEALANT! By being able to bond with the protein bonds of hair strands it allows the hair maintain its natural moisture content. You see how it melts when warm and solidifies when cool, that's what happens while it's on your hair too so e careful not rouse too much at a time as it tends to stiffen hair strands especially in cool temperatures and most importantly since it will seal in whatever moisture is on your hair, remember to moisturize your hair properly first before using it so it is sealing in moisturized hair and not dry, brittle hair.

Argan oil is the Last oil I recommend you get to know during this challenge, I found about this mysterious oil when I started noticing that every product hair and skin was claiming to have Moroccan argan oil in it, what could be so special about this oil, I wondered till I did my research and found that it contains vitamin E and natural antioxidants making it an oil for many purposes including promoting ELASTICITY of hair strands so they don't easy snap off and break, curbs fizziness and promotes SHINE, LOCKS IN MOISTURE despite its non greasy consistency making it great for daily use. It also contains unsaturated fatty acids like Omega 3 found in healthy fish.

Combine these oils together and you can have for yourself a very potent hair oil mix;

 but of course I'd advice you choose the oils according to your hair needs.

 I hope this post has helped you know more about these oils and how you can use them for your hair's benefit during the NHCG 6inches of growth hair challenge.

Till my next tip, happy growing ladies!!

Hip Hip Hurray to me!! Yesterday the 25th was my birthday!!!

Hiya,
I am so thankful to God for all the things He has done for me and how far He has brought me through the years, took some time to reflect on my life thus far and was so moved by the sheer love, patience and mercy He has had for me, indeed a life in Christ is very rewarding!!

Now to my 'hair life', I have been soooo busy lately, I have an entire page on my phone with blog topics that I am yet to tackle!! Different things have been tugging at my attention plus the fact that you wont believe this; but this homegirl has not been feeling her hair at all!!!

Well let me tell you why! Remember last month just before my son's birthday I got my hair relaxed and I told you all in the relaxer update that my hair did not process at all! Well it didn't process at all and I have been paying dearly for it!! So there is over processing with a relaxer when you allow the relaxer to literally fry your hair till its so bone straight it sticks to your scalp and then there's what happened to me last month and that's NON PROCESSING!!  not under processing which is the case when a texlax is done properly, so I've have had to deal with new growth that never processed and new growth that is coming in and let me just say; no wonder I insist that being natural isn't for me at all!!

Just take a look at my hair at 6 weeks on MY BIRTHDAY!!(Yes I'm screaming)

I have mentioned countless times how I like my edges sleek for special occasions, so you can imagine how I struggled with the idea of my hair looking like this on my birthday. I seriously deliberated the idea of relaxing it but at 6weeks that would be a travesty!! What kind of example would I be setting for you guys!! So I reluctantly moisturized and sealed my hair, plastered as much olive oil gel as I could on my edges and remembered the perfect accessory that would take the attention off my dense new growth; I decided to don my hair chain(my sis recently got it for me weeks ago on her trip to Houston) my very funny friend called it a Hair Chandeliar! LOL

So for my birthday dinner with family, this is the look I came up with; I simply added two tracks of clip in extensions to the back of my hair, sleeked my edges down the best way I could, divided my hair with a center part then twisted the ends on both sides and tied the ends up in a bun. Finally to serve as the ultimate distraction and give me the BIRTHDAY GIRL look, I wore the hair chain!!

In the end my hair did not look as bad as I thought it would and I got quite a few compliments for the hair chain  but definitely more stares! You better be bold and feel fierce to rock something like a hair chain that attracts such attention, don't think I can rock it on any old day! lol

This the view of my hair from the front while I cut my cake!!

In all, this experience taught me a few things; first I have to master texlaxing if I am going to keep doing it, last time was horrible, next time which will have to be on week 8 this time and it has to be better, I need to take out time to make sure all my new growth strands are properly coated with relaxer, I need to take my time to massage the relaxer on my new growth, I need to spend more time with my eyes on the my hair rather than on the clock like last time!

It also taught that I have finally learnt to pesevere and hold out!!lol Yes oh, You guys dont know how my hands were itching me to bring out a relaxer, in the past before I started my hair journey, I have relaxed my hair and colored it honey blonde and cut it with a nail scissors all on the same day because my hands were itching me to do something to my hair; see the picture;

 So being able to control myself and ignore the new growth and find a way to make it work made me really realize how far I have come in my knowledge of what is good and what is bad for my hair, instant gratification in hair care is usually the road to hair loss and breakage, just let that be etched in your thought process and you will find yourself making the right decisions for your hair!!

Anyways, so that was how my birthday went, If you are feeling the hair chain and want somathat feel free to order when the next import window opens on the 1st of February!! Speaking of imports, spy all the hair goodies I brought in this month on my next post, up today!!

Soooo since it was my birthday, I have decided to give away a SPRUSH to a Naija reader(as long as you live in Naija or have an address here, you qualify), all you need to do to win is be the first to write in the comments section, how old I turned yesterday i.e my age!!

Anyways God keep us till my next birthday when my edges will be sleek and I wont need clip in's for nothing!!

Hiya,
So I am starting a series here on hair products I have found that are made in Nigeria, not packaged here, not imported but MADE here by our very own. The aim really is to review products to find out if they are diamonds in the rough or just amongst the sea of products that should be trashed with petroleum oil, paraffin and all the bad chemical orshirishi.

The first product up for review is this product I stumbled upon at Ebeanor, Lekki called

EMILY MILLIONAIRE COCONUT OIL AND HERBS WITH ALOE VERA.

Ingredients;100% natural coconut oil & herbs, soya beans oil, carrot oil, bergamot oil, saint basil, banana jam, vitamin E, refined palm oil, Placenta, Protein, D pathenol, African shea butter, avacado pear oil, almond oil, honey, vegetable oil, orange peels, jojoba oil, olive oil, aloe Vera.

Whew!! Madam Emily MILLIONAIRE you sabi concoct oh!! To be honest some of the ingredients listed made me laugh, which one is 'saint basil' I'm guessing she wanted to write 'scent basil'? Then placenta? whose??lol or the ingredients on the list that are a bit vague, like where she writes 'herbs' what herbs? Or where she writes Protien, is it hydrolized protein or which one?

Anyways, even if some of the ingredients listed confused me, I wasn't about to walk away from this product because of all the other good stuff listed; coconut oil, vitamin E, jojoba oil, almond oil, honey, avocado oil, Shea butter plus some stuff I have not heard about like bergamot oil and banana jam...this lady didn't hold back!
If you watch diners, drive ins and dives you will get me when I say I can just imagine this woman in her lab throwing into a stirring pot every and any thing she could lay her hands on!!

Now unto the directions as listed on the container; for best results, every other day at night, part your hair, rub a little quantity on the scalp, massage very well and allow to penetrate. Use on permed hair, curled hair and also virgin hair.

She also recommends using a teaspoon of the product on your scalp and heat under a dryer for 3 to 4 minutes for proper penetration...

Result; this product claims that using it helps in the correction and restoration of damaged hair, enriches growth of relaxed, curled and natural hair. If properly used, silky, dark and healthy, dandruff-free hair is your assurance.

So did this product live up to its claims? Well I've had this product for a few months now and used it a few times. At first I used it as a moisturizer but the after smell of this product is extremely herbal and pungent  plus as you can see from the ingredients, it an oil based product and has no water in it so for daily use, I would recommend this product as a sealant and not a moisturizer, I personally put one of my posts to work and repurposed this in my DEEP CONDITIONING MIX and it worked GREAT. I have it on my hair right now, mixed it with Organics cholesterol and tea tree oil.

 Will let it penetrate into my strands all night long as I sleep with a shower cap on.

In summary let me list;

 The pros of this product and made in Nigeria products in general;

They are cheap and affordable; this tub was just about N250 .

They are readily available, unlike the imported products, you can go to any market where cosmetics are sold and you will find these products.

You can trust that the organic ingredients are the real deal because we dey Africa!!

As for the cons;
Im guessing you already noticed that there are some vague ingredients listed as I already stated; that's a bit worrisome because it's either they  are not being truthful about what's in it or they just don't know what to call a particular ingredient and call it 'a herb'. This is a major issue with made in Nigeria products!

Another issue I'm having with this particular product is, I wonder what informed the manufacturer to put ALL of these many ingredients together! Every product should have a purpose, this product with all these many ingredients is all over the place!

Then there's the funny claim on the bottle that states '4 day action'! Lol

 prepare your mind to read such on made in Naija hair products, 5 day miracle, 4 day magic!! Yeah right!!

But again I cannot knock down their hustle because they have used the wrong words or tried to persuade buyers with plenty grammar. So will I recommend this product? YES, for the price and for deep conditioning, not so much for daily use.

Is it a diamond in the rough? Ehhh if the recipe is tweaked a wee bit, maybe if it was water based, less ingredients used ( I mean why add vegetable oil with all the other oils listed) then this product could definitely be a diamond in the rough.

Why am I always talking about HAIR PRODUCTS you ask?
Simply put, hair products are your hair's diet and just like with food where if you starve yourself or you don't eat healthy it starts to tell on your body, if you don't use good products, products that will help nurture your hair and cater to its needs, your hair will never be healthy so that's why I've taken it upon myself to tell you all about any products I find as its important to have as many options as possible because our hair needs keep evolving and everybody's hair is different but you will never know how a product works for your hair except you try it.

If you ever stumble upon this product, give it a try will ya! If you know of any made in Nigeria product that you think is a diamond in the rough, feel free to send me an email telling me about it and I'll be sure to try it and give it the needed exposure!!

Hiya,
It's been busy up in here!! Thanks to all the many readers that have patronized SHOP NHCG imports for January!! The window is now closed, orders have been made and I am waiting excitedly till all the yummy stuff come in just in time for the first month of our challenge to be over!!

Now back to the topic, I have decided that through out this challenge, I will post quick straight forward tips, guidelines, directions etc that will help participants.

Today's guide is all about the length check T-shirt!! By now if you are participating in the challenge you should have taken a picture with a length check t-shirt that's the one thing that qualifies you for the prize at the end-the picture showing your starting point with the length check T-shirt!

So I'm chatting with my pal the other day and she says 'hey babes I don't know how to make that your length check t-shirt oh!' I was like hmmm that's true, I just assumed everyone could figure out how to make one but after our convo, I decided not to leave it to chance and give anyone an excuse for not participating in the challenge so this post will guide you on how I made my length check T-shirt-No more excuses Elle!! :)

First you need a T-shirt with a plain back, preferable white or light colored so the markings can show, then you need a marker, a ruler marked in inches and a cardboard or book or any hard surface that will prevent the ink of the marker from sipping through to the front of the T-shirt.

The first thing  I think you need to do is determine how you will measure your markings. If you have shorter hair, say neck length, your markings should start from where your hair falls, so basically the longest part of your hair should be the beginning of your marking. If your hair is so short it does not fall, your first marking should be 6 inches away from where your ends are or a reasonable point like neck length.

Next step is to slip the hard flat surface in my case, shoe box cover under the T-shirt; This as I stated before prevents the ink of the marker from sipping through to the front as well as allows you draw the line as straight as possible.

For me I knew my hair was at least Arm pit length so I measured the shirt from its neck to the arm pit level and that length was the 7 inches.

Then I decided to mark the shirt in intervals of 2 inches. So the next line was 9inches and then 11 inches and then 13 inches like that till 15 inches.

My advice is you mark the inches first with dots then use the ruler to draw the line across as straight as you can.

Please don't let the number your hair falls on bug you. I must confess when my hair fell on 7 inches I was like huh? That can't be right, It was until I realized that I had not measured my hair from the nape of my head but rather from the neck of the T-shirt which is at least 3 inches away from my nape and measured at 7 inches. I checked and my hair is more like 10/11 inches now by the end of this challenge it should be at the 13 inches mark on the T-shirt y'all( taking into consideration the 3 inches not reflected; meaning in reality it should be 16inches long) !! It's a bold stance but I'm excited just thinking about the possibility!!

If numbering the lines in inches bugs you that much, try using alphabets or roman numerals or simply just say 1,2,3 without acknowledging how many inches it should be.

In any case what I'm doing is focusing on where my hair will be at the end of the challenge and not where it is now, that's what I urge you all to please do. If your hair is not even close to the neck of your t-shirt, spend more time dreaming about when it will finally land on your neck than brood about how it is just hanging in the air, it's a healthier way to approach this challenge.

I hope this post has helped, no more excuses, having a length check t-shirt is as easy as A B C, so please make one today, take a picture of your starting point, see you in February when you have gained one more inch and then in April when you gain another and then June when we meet for half time assessments till the end of the year comes, inch by inch, we will get there!!

Hiya,
I got the AS I AM Coconut Cowash conditioner during the November window;

It comes in a 16oz container and claims to 'gently remove residue including all of the things used to style your coils...contains a special blend of natural ingredients including saw palmetto and phytosterols that help promote healthy hair growth from the follicular level.'

Ingredients listed(the good stuff); water, extracts-coconut, tangerine, castor oil, castor seed oil, coconut oil.

I heard good things about this product and decided I have to try it for myself. So I tried it out today as part of my weekend treat and I made sure I tried it all by itself so I could have an honest review of the product.

The consisitency is thick like a relaxer but not so thick that applying it is a chore;

I rebelled and didnt wet my hair as the directions stated because dry hair absorbs products better- (''AS I AM'' team get in the know!!)
 It looked like I applied a relaxer;

I covered my hair with my shower cap for about an hour, the directions didnt say. Then I rinsed it out and did a two minute scalp massage with Roux Porosity control conditioner;

Then I let my hair air dry and let me tell you this product made my very puffy new growth SOFT!!

It has set my hair up for an easy week of styling and for that I love this product. I was a bit reluctant to buy the product because I felt it was not enough product compared to the price (the container is decieving, its just today I found out it holds 16oz of product made me happy). I also found that after my second use of this product, there's still a lot of it, it didnt even go half way-

A little of it goes a long way which is great!

I think this product will definitely be a staple in my deep conditioning/weekend treat section.

If you want me to bring in this product or any other product of your choice during this month's import window that closes on Monday the 7th, please send me an email-daboju@yahoo.com and I will get back to you ASAP.

How's the hair challenge coming along?- have you all gotten length check T-shirts? They are a great way to track your progress through out the challenge and a prerequsite if you want to qualify to win the star prize at the end of the year.

Oh remember I said I was going to start keeping a shed hair dairy? well today was wash day and this is the hair I shed;

Compared to last wash day;

As you can see the shedding this week was nothing comapred to last week! Shedding was crazy last week thanks to the fact that I straightened my hair, even with heat protectant, all the manipulation and detangling during straightening is just too much for my hair thats why I rarely use heat and advice ladies to rarely use heat- I have been at a salon and watched a stylist hide lumps of shed hair from a client as he detangled during straightening- so not worth it!!

Anyways, this week I plan to keep my hair in a simple bun, maybe a braid here and there but little or no combing all week long- yup! I have also ditched my brush, Jen from Justgrow already ditched her's and it seems to be working for her, I'll use my wide tooth comb to smooth out my hair and my old very soft tooth brush for my edges!

I hope this post helps those who have heard about this product as well as the other tips I talk about.

Thanks for stopping by and expect more tips to help you through the challenge!!

Hiya,
HAPPY NEW YEAR LADIES!!!!! The new year came by in a flash for me!! I wish you all the blessings of joy and peace in 2013 and may the Lord grant you your heart desires!!!

Once again I have to apologize to those who have sent me emails that I am yet to respond to, things have been very busy lately and hopefully I will take time to respond to every email ASAP!!

In the mean time, ARE YOU ALL READY FOR MY 2 BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS?!!

ANNOUNCEMENT 1; THE NHCG 6INCHES OF GROWTH CHALLENGE HAS BEGUN!! It began once the clock struck 12am and will end in December on a date I will choose.  HERE'S A LINK to the Guidelines and rules governing the challenge. I have gone ahead to number my length check T-SHIRT;
sorry the lighting is bad!

Much better, I had to turn the lights off  and tilt forward so you see the lines on the shirt!

I measured the T-shirt to 16inches, my hair fell on aboout 7inches at just past APL.

For the challenge I will be focusing on filling out the ends of my hair and ensuring maximum length retention and for that reason, I will be keeping a (believe it or not)- Shed Hair dairy!!! There is nothing as convincing as visual evidence, so I will be gathering;

 balls of my shed hair in 2013!! I will gather them each wash day and during styling which will be very low manipulation and I will save them and till the end of the month and take a picture, then discard!! Hopefully the pictures I take will help me track my shedding and Im hoping the balls shrink as the months pass by or at least remain the same size but definitely does'nt increase!!'

If you are not grossed by the idea of saving your shed hair all month long, you can join me :) I will share more tips and tricks with you all that will help let us get the most out of the challenge...till then unto announcement number 2!

ANNOUNCEMENT 2; THE NHCG HAIR IMPORTS WINDOW IS OPEN!!
November imports went better than I could imagine and the January import window is finally open for all of you who itched for the December window to be open. It will be open till the 7th of January, to find out how you can get hair products you have searched high and low for in Naija to no avail, please click HERE or the SHOP NHCG page above, scroll down and you will see suggestions of the products you can get and how to go about ordering them.

As a guide I will share with you products I personally recommend you try this month!!

ROUX POROSITY CONTROL CORRECTOR & CONDITIONER;

Have you done a POROSITY TEST on your hair? Well I did one a week after I relaxed my hair; I simply threw a ball of my hair in a bowl of water;

And watched it sink, as you can see, it didnt sink so quickly and that meant my hair needed to be more porous so all the yummy nutrients and oils can be absorbed, if it sank too quickly, that would mean the hair was too porous which will mean as quickly as the yummy products go into the hair, they quickly dry out also!

 But the ROUX Porosity control conditioner ensures that your hair is just the right balance of being porous. I love that it is watery and light like a shampoo;

Making it perfect for Co-Washing(you all know what that means by now right? Its 2013 don't slack oh, know your hair terms :)

So without a doubt, I think Roux Porosity Control conditioner should be a staple in any hair stock!!

Another Product I recommend this month is GRAPESEED OIL

I bought this oil without knowing much about it, it was just one of the oils I saw at Whole foods when I went there...but as I got it, I started hearing great things about this oil especially from Waist length hair guru JEN from Justgrowalready!! Apparently the oil is a ceramide and ceramides according to my research perform a "barrier function" and help reduce the hair's overall porosity. They bind to the hair fiber in damaged, vulnerable areas to help prevent natural moisture and protein loss that occurs when we manipulate our hair. That sounds to me like a winner!! So if you are looking for backing in the porosity department again, Grapeseed Oil is a product I highly recommend!!!

Finally, I like to recommend a bang for your buck product and this month it has to be the CANTU SHEA BUTTER LEAVE IN CONDITIONING REPAIR CREAM
I like this product because its extremely affordable, comes in large quantity and is very light weight and moisturizing which is great for everyday use though it is protein based!! I think its a very great product and highly recommend it if you are looking for a good moisturizer that will do the job and last a few months!!

I hope this post has you pumped to take on your hair in 2013!! Dont worry, Naija Hair Can Grow will be here for you whenever you need help!!

Now lets CHEERS TO THE NEW YEAR!!!
