NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? Who has checked if they retained 1 inch of length this month. The month is basically over, if you did not retain the 1 inch this time or you had to trim it off to get your ends healthy, don't worry you still have April to check, in fact you have the entire year, to get your regimen in order and start to reap the benefits of retaining length. Remember the Star Prize which I am exempted from even if I retain 100inches of growth( I wish) is $100 worth of hair product imports and a NHCG goody bag, consolation prizes will also be awarded...

My tip for this month as we tackle this challenge is; Know the basics or Ask me!!

I have always wanted to do an ASK DABS section on this blog but been pre occupied but you readers must have been in my thoughts because lately the amount of emails I receive asking different hair questions has been off the roof!! And let me tell you I welcome them especially if they are straight to the point, clear and specific and any other related synonym - 'the how do I get my hair long?' question makes me go 'huh?!, read my blog!!'. Anyways I make sure I reply as quick as I can and extensively too.

However I recently noticed that I have gotten quite a few questions on twitter and in the comments form on this blog that I have totally ignored mostly because I didn't see them or they required too long replies. I want to apologize for this especially as it concerns twitter; let me confess twitter is NOT my thing at all! I still don't get it, all the @'s, #'s, mentions etc just confuses the heck out of me...sooooo here's what I have decided; I have decided to compile these questions and answer them in my first ever ASK DABS post. I will be doing this from time to time to ensure that everyone benefits from the questions asked which are usually basic hair enquires usually sent in by readers new to the concept of a hair journey.

Below are the FAQ's;

About Glycerin;
Q. What kind of glycerin do you use?
A. I use the pure vegatable glycerin, not borax or glycerin mixed with fragrance etc

Q. How should I mix the glycerin with water?
A. I personally mix 1 part glycerin for 2 parts drinking water-(because its sterilized and free from bacteria)

Q. How should I use the glycerin mix?
A. I use the glycerin mix mainly for detangling my roots. To avoid frizziness, sprtiz the mix on your roots and massage into the roots before combing for best results.

About Henna;
Q. What type of henna do you use?
A. I use export grade henna; its more refined and smooth; free of  grains, the particular one I got has a time chart on the side that tells you how long to wait to get the right color release(thats if coloring your is your focus)

Q. How will henna make my hair feel?
A. When I use henna, I usually find that my hair feels stronger because it coats your hair and does what protein treatments do which is fill out the missing keratin bonds on your hair strands making your strands stronger and thicker looking. Following it with a conditioning treat or incorporating a conditioner in your mix helps to reduce the hardness and crunch that your hair might have after using henna.

About Hair regimens;
Q. what's co-washing?
A. Co-washing is simply using a hair conditioner to wash your hair. Shampoos are drying especially those with sulphates, co-washing allows you to cleanse and condition your hair without drying it out, I love it!!

Q. What weekend treat will you recommend for a starter?
A. As a starter its best to start with simple, straight forward hair treats. My formula is this; 1 natural ingredient + 1 hair conditioner + 1 natural oil.
Natural ingredients range from a banana, avacado, tea, honey, yoghurt, fenugreek, bentonite clay, henna etc. Please check my weekend treats to guide you on when to incorporate what natural ingredient.
for oils check out this post; here

Q. I can't do without my flat iron! How do you air dry your hair so it dries out straight?
A. I have a quick trick; make sure you use a frizz control serum on your damp hair, detangle, moisturize and seal and then grab a silk scarf, wrap your hair as smooth as possible or just comb it and sleek it straight down and secure your hair down with your silk scarf which will make your hair cuticles lie straight, smooth and shinny. You can use satin hair rollers for your ends- my satin roller results from last year were the truth!!doesnt it look like I used heat?!!

Q. LOC method or moisturizing and sealing?
A. The LOC method- read more about it here is a more intense way to keep your hair moisturized and sealed. its great because you dont have to do it daily. I like the two methods but I will say this, when I am free and have time on my hands then moisturizing and sealing is my go to daily method of hair care but if Im busy or going on a trip and I know I will not have time to care for my hair for a few days, the LOC method is my go to hair care regimen because it will keep the hair moisturized and manageable for longer.

Q. What is sealing?
A. Sealing is using mainly oils/oil based products like shea butter mixes to seal in moisture from moisturizing, into your hair strands. Basically it keeps the good stuff in and the bad stuff out!!

That's all for now people. I am going to try and keep these FAQ's posts coming, till my next post, below is a pictorial guide of what I was up to hair wise today(just to show starters its not that complicated and you can care for your hair on the go)

So last night I coated my strands with hair trigger and AS I AM co-wash conditioner and covered it with a shower cap and went to bed.

The morning came and I simply rinsed off in the shower and towel dried the ends gently no shampooing; simply wrapped the towel round my ends and squezzed gently, use a tshirt if you feel the towel tug at your hair.

Once my hair was well towel dried, I dressed up and headed out to work armed with the following;
 Tresemme's split end remedy mainly to moisturize my ends, Organix rejuvenating cherry blossom ginseng miracle defrizzant cream for frizz control and Nemaste organics  shea butter, lavender and lemon grass body butter(im using it on my hair) and a wide tooth comb.

When I was done apply the three products respectively, I got to detangling which was a breeze;

To keep my hair in work mode and help define my ends, I decided to smooth out my edges the best way I could (next time I'll carry a silk scarf which I will use to tie down my edges then take it off when I get to work) then I braided the ends into 1 big braid;

Took out the braid when I got home and my hair is totally dry and full and filled with bouncy curly ringlets which I will play with tomorrow and for the rest of the week, so you see, its not that complicated, its easy brezzy!!

I hope this post helps those of you that have asked these questions; any more questions? send me an email and Ill do my best to put you through!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hiya,

How's everyone doing?Hope all is well at your endz!!

 Starting SHOP NHCG has had some really great benefits, one of the main benefits being my introduction to really great products , products I had never heard about or cared about but because a reader of this blog ordered it, I gave it a shot and  loved it.

One of such products is the HAIR TRIGGER EXPLOSIVE GROWTH ELIXIR with Cayenne pepper introduced to me by Kelly(Thanks again girl!!).

I usually never purchase products that claim to be 'explosive' or 'miraculous' or 'magical' because I just have always felt those words were just for marketing purposes so when Kelly ordered a bottle of this stuff I was like 'which one is this again? Poor girl has fallen for a marketing gimmick!' Not one to make conclusions without at least researching, I decided to look up reviews and more people than I expected loved it(if you really want to know more about a product you are just hearing about
googling up reviews is a MUST) even blogger Jen from Just Grow Already had tried it out so I concluded the product might not be that bad after all.

 I ordered it for Kelly in Novemeber. Remember how I told you the manufactuer sent a hand written thank you note HERE, loved the personal touch but I still was not convinced. Even when the import window opened in January I was still not interested...then a twist of fate happened!!! Kelly sent me a mail saying she needed another bottle with a scent ( Well thats what I thought she said) because the first bottle she ordered had no scent and I hear the original scent is hardcore, so I go ahead and buy a bottle for Kelly and then she tells me that she did'nt want another bottle but just a scent to add to her existing bottle and unfortunately the company does'nt sell only scents so I was stuck with the already ordered bottle and decided to try it out for myself and see if I would like it. So here goes my review...

Ingredients; Oils:Avacado, Castor, Clary Sage, Jojoba, Rosemary.
                    Vitamins; Biotin, Silica.
                     Herbs; Black Tea, Cayenne pepper, garlic and Onions
Don't you like how she breaks down the ingredients; oils, vitamins and herbs, will definitely help if you want to concoct this mix yourself as the ingredients are organic and straight forward.

Directions; Again the manufacturer does a great job in telling you different ways you can use this product; Below are the directions in my summary...
Daily Treatment; Apply to scalp, dont go beyond 1 inch of roots, massage well for 2-5minutes and style
Overnight pre-poo treatment; Apply from roots to ends evenly, you may add an oil/conditioner, massage, cover with plastic cap, rinse next day  and shampoo.
Hot oil treatment- apply to damp/dry hair, distribute evenly from scalp to ends, massage, cover hair for 15-30mins with plastic cap and stay under dryer. Follow with shampoo.

Other intsructions; store in cool, dry place. Wait 48hours before/after relaxer or color treatment to use, wash hands after use, avoid eye contact...

Now to my experience; I have only used this product as an overnight pre poo and in the 3times I have used it on my hair, my hubs has asked if I baked cupcakes!! I got the vanilla pound cake scent(for Kelly) and all I can say is YUM!! The scent really does a great job in masking all the garlic and onions that's inside the mix! The mix has the look and consistency of pure honey(maybe slightly lighter) or maple syrup.

The first time I poured it in a bowl I was not feeling it on its own so I mixed it with some conditioner like I would if I was using honey.

Applied it to my hair from root to tip, covered my hair as per the instructions and went to bed smelling like cake! It will help to sleep with a towel over your pillow to absorb any spills. Woke up the next morning could'nt wait to rinse off. I rinsed off the mix, did not shampoo only used Roux Porosity Control Conditioner to cowash and let me tell you...I won't lie to you, my new growth at 7 plus weeks has never felt as soft as this mix made it feel!!
Look at all that new growth, it was super soft when I was done, I couldnt believe it!! Then talk about the hair I lost as due as my hair was for a touch up;

Detangling was a breeze, I seriously could'nt believe it and thought it was a fluke so I've used it twice since my relaxer this month(thats how much  I love this stuff) used it yesterday on a wenesday!! Being a weekday I hardly have time to indulge in hair treats but after I ran my hands through my hair and it felt dry, I just said to myself this hair needs to be hair triggered!! Mixed some of the hair trigger with my organixs macadamian oil hair mask, slathered the mixed on my hair, root to tip, covered hair and went to bed, this morning rinsed it off in the shower as I prepared for work, mosisturized and sealed in my car!! Yes if you saw a lady combing her hair and massaging in products at the Lekki toll this morning...she was probably me!LOL

and let me show you guys how much hair I lost, I kept it safe in my bag just for this post;

Now that's very little hair loss for hair that has not tasted water since Saturday!!

In all as you can tell, I am very pleased with this product and just might take on the challenge of using it for 2months straight and see whether my hair growth will explode as recommended by the manufacturer!!

Feel free to visit the website; here There you will see testimonials and pictures of befores and afters of customers. Not too dramatic changes in my opinion but after I used this product and know how well it has made my hair feel, even at 8weeks post relaxer, I defintely see its potential to aid in hair growth over a period of time!

Naturals...if your hair is 4b/c coarse and difficult to deal with, give hair trigger a chance, I tell you it might be the answer to making your hair softer; that I can attest to!!

For as many as have heard about this product and wanted to know a little more about it before purchasing it, here you have it! Hope my review helps!!

In other news, I have gotten a few complaints from people who want to take part in the challenge who say they don't relax often(bi monthly) and its only when they are relaxed they can check their length because that's when their hair is stretched out; for those people or people with natural hair you can either feel free to wait till you relax it to take the pictures for the challenge or try stretching your hair with your fingers and keeping your head straight (I have seen naturals do this to check their actual length) in any case so I don't sound like a strict/rigid teacher, I have decided that as long as you have your starting picture taken at the beginning of the year when the challenge started and you have your closing picture  taken at the end of the year when the challenge closes, you are qualified for the challenge, pictures in between are a welcome bonus but they dont have to be taken bi-monthly...hope thats fine with ladies who were not feeling the rules of the challenge!!

Thanks for all the support and next month when the import window opens, think about hair triggering for sure!!

Hiya,
So as I promised, this post brings you my first relaxer update for the year 2013. I relaxed at 8weeks, told you all about my ordeal here. It went well this time, thank God! I actually did the entire process infront of the TV as I watched Burkina Faso play Ghana in the Semi Finals of the AFCON competition!

I am not a huge soccer person but after Nigeria had scored 4 goals, I had to know who we were going to play! So I turned my living room to a salon and yes my Hubs gave me the side eye but he saw the plea in my eyes and he understood...I definitely tried not to spend 30minutes relaxing the hair as that would not have given me the texlaxed look so I must have spent about 20/25minutes for the entire process, I coated my hair (leaving out the roots)with conditioner and coconut oil (cannot over emphasis the importance of this step) and twisted in small sections then I started with my edges which usually are the last place I apply my relaxer but with edges that looked like they had never been relaxed before, I needed to start there. I dont advice that if you have thinning edges.

With the twists, I did something different this time around.  While having my hair in twists is a brilliant idea because it really prevents the tangles and breakage that arise from dividing your hair as you apply your relaxer and it saves time, if not done properly some parts of your roots can be left untouched so I decided that this time I would take a twist, loosen it, apply the relaxer with my sprush and smooth it out with a comb straight away;
And I thank God I made that decision because it avoided time wasting when I was done applying the relaxer and it was time to wash it out;

I washed my hair out, applied some conditioner rinsed it out a few minutes later and the game was still on!!! I came in time to meet the penalties; Ok can I take a minute to talk about the Burkina Faso striker's hairstyle? Can I say macaronni and cheese?!!LOL

No Bance, we dont think your hairstyle is cute!! lol

Needless to say, I had a good laugh over his hair style and He seemed to have rubbed off on other players, one was sporting a bleach blonde beard and even his Ghanaian opponent had a similar hairstyle...what salon were they visiting in SA, I wonder!!

Jokes aside, I enjoyed the match and enjoyed that my hair was perfectly texlaxed in the end with sleek enough edges;

Now to the NHCG 6inches inches of growth challenge check in; I straightened my hair on low heat, put on my length check T-Shirt and excitedly checked to see if I had succeeded in gaining the 1inch of growth from December to now...the verdict is in and its a............YES!!

As you can see, I am past 7 inches and an inch to go to 9inches, my ends are starting to tapper which I am not a fan of but I am tired of cutting this hair because of the smallest issues, I am going to only seek and destroy split ends but that's as far as I must go for this challenge to be successful. So far so good!!

 If you are taking part in the challenge, you should take a length check for February, remember we check every 2 months, next check is April, the person closest to gaining 6inches of growth at the end of the year will get $100 worth of hair products of their choice and NHCG goodie bag consisting of a choosen hair kit. Compensation prices will also be available to ladies who showed remarkable hair transformation at the end of the year, soooooo take care of your hair and while you do, snap away, you are just a picture away from winning any of these prizes!! Cant wait to see your pictures!!

I am opening a new page beside the SHOP NHCG page just to upload my progress pictures for this challenge, this picture with my length check is the first that will be going on there, hopefully I get to my goal of reaching the 13inches mark by the end of the year, God willing...till then expect more tips and tricks from me to make the challenge worth it!!

In other news, I did not go to profile Natures Gentle Touch's Hair Institute after some of you guys warned me that they would make me use only their products...whoever knows salon owners that do this, please discourage them, its not a good idea at all especially when dealing with African hair. As for the hair institute, I understand that they have a brand (which needs some refining) to promote but we all have different unique textures and you cannot subject every head of hair to the same product. Let clients use what works for them, if you are going to impose products then you better have a variety of different brands to choose from... based on this finding profiling them is out of the window for me but I have my sights on many other salons in this town, now my hair is well texlaxed I won't mind a salon visit...so stay tuned people!!

Have a great week ahead!

Hiya,
So now that I am strong again I have decided to look for some trouble!! A few weeks back I saw this Nature's Gentle touch ad campaign plasterred all over the web.

BEAUTIFUL Pictures of these ladies without a doubt but there is a BUT!! The but arose from the statement made by the Company reps; “Natures Gentle Touch is a leading hair care brand that provides solutions to different hair and scalp problems like dandruff, hair breakage, slow hair growth, hair loss, weak and damaged hair. The brand develops solutions that are specifically designed for Africans living in Africa.”

There was absolutely no mention of the fact that these beautiful ladies had WEAVES on!! Mr Company rep how about a statment like this; 'Natures Gentle touch is a leading hair care brand that provides solutions to different hair and scalp problems ....... allowing your hair to stay healthy and strong whether you choose to wear weaves, stay natural or otherwise...'

Me thinks that would have been a more truthful reflection of the ladies hair in this Ad.

This Ad campaign reminded me of one of their reps I bumped into at Park n Shop sometime ago. I picked up one of their moisturizers and first product on the list is Petroleum Jelly of course I put it down immediately, look up and the guy was standing beside me and asked why I dropped their product back on the shelf I said 'sorry its not what I was looking for'. He asks why and I show him the petroleum jelly on the list...then he says thats a very good ingredient then he takes a look at my hair and says, ' Your hair is very damaged'.

Mind you this was at the height of my hair flourish in 2012, my hair had just gotten a trim, I was BSL, I had it moisturized and sealed in a sleek pony tail, ends full! So I look at this man and ask him, 'Please how is my hair unhealthy?' and then he does what every well rehearsed sales person does- He starts with my edges- and says If you use Natures Gentle's (cant remember the product he picked up) your edges will be healthier than this, if you use our (picks another product) your hair will have so much shine and lustre. (Picks their shampoo) and says washing your hair with this shampoo will ensure that your hair stays clean and fresh.....then I ask 'so how often should I wash my hair with the shampoo' (na there I catch am!!) LOL

He took a long pause, looked at my hair like he was calculating how many strands I had on my head and said, 'you know right now your hair is very greasy and oily which is not good so I think you should....'before he could finish I said 'thats because I moisturize and seal it daily' and he says...moisturize and what?!!! LOL!! That was the end of my conversation with the guy, I did not want to confuse him further.

Whats the point of my little rearsh, well I feel there is no point in misleading your audience as a manufacturer, it is better to make a top notch product, properly educate your staff and keep yourselves updated with the changes in the market than to present to your audience something that isn't really what it is. It might be a good marketing strategy intitially but then you stumble on a discerning audience and blow your cover...just let your product speak for you.

Because I like to give people the benefit of a doubt, I will be off to their Hair Institute this weekend with my spy shades on for A SALON PROFILE!! Cant wait and hopefully they dont make me use only their products, might have to leave there; bag of my products in hand!!

Is it just me that thought this Ad campaign was misleading? Fell free to share your thoughts!!

In other news VALENTINES DAY IS ON THURSDAY!!! And NHCG wants to show some love...everything on SHOP NHCG (that is in stock) will be 14% OFF from midnight into the 14th of Febuary. So all interested readers please feel free to check that page out.

Till my next post!

Hiya,
So I started a series here last month on hair products I have found that are made in Naija, not packaged here, not imported here but MADE here by our very own. The aim really is to review products to find out if they are diamonds in the rough or just amongst the sea of products that should be trashed with petroleum oil, paraffin and all the bad chemical orshirishi.

The name of the brand up for review is called Namaste Organics!

 The particular product I bought because of the yummy lemony smell was their Lavender and Lemongrass Whipped Shea body butter!!

I'm sure you are thinking, 'Dabs ah ah but it's a body butter!!'. Yes it is but the interesting thing about organic products are their multi facetedness. All the ingredients in this product are oils and Shea butter which can be used on the body as well as the hair!! The Manufacturer just doesn't know it yet!

Infact all the products with organic Shea butter we're all stocked on the body cream aisle because as usual hair is not really our thing in these parts, most people don't care what they use on their hair, let the sub par salons deal with that but EVERYBODY cares what they rub on their skin!!( I'm voicing their thought process) so most of the products including the product up for review had words like 'toning' or 'brightening' on them to catch the attention of majority consumers of toners and brighteners... Anyways I looked at the ingredients, opened up the tub and this product is whipped to perfection!

Ingredients; Shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, lemon grass oil and lavender oil- It smells DIVINE!!

At N2000 the price is pretty high compared  to other shea butter based products on display;

but I totally understand why. The packaging for one stands out, When I picked it up, I also picked a similar product made in the UK and was quite certain this product was made there as well so you can imagine my shock when I read the label and it said proudly made in Nigeria, infact the address was right here in Lekki phase 1!! Pleasant surprise!! See Nemaste Organics beside the made in UK product which cost N3000(really nice whipped shea butter too but I prefer Nemaste Organics for the stronger lemon smell, the texture and of course the price).

In Sum, Nemaste Organics is a massive black daimond in the rough, I will be trying their other products which have interesting oils like mandarin, I think I saw some peppermint, Aloe vera just general good organic stuff!!

In other news, I'M IN LOVE AGAIN!!!! with my hair!! Got a relaxer during the week, could not wait for the weekend, once 8 weeks clocked!! will be telling you all about how it went on my next post and will measure my growth on the length T-shirt, i Should have 1 inch of growth...fingers crossed/

Till my next post.

Hiya,
It's been a while! Your home girl has been ill!!!

It started as a mild headache last week and graduated to coughing, a sore throat, sneezing, a fever and major migraines!! Saw the doctor and she asked me if I'm on the computer a lot( didn't help that I had my iPad with me in her office, using it to while away time and squinting my eyes at the same time) when I responded in the affirmative she blamed my migraine on my constant use of the computer and made me promise to scale down my computer time in order for my migraines to stop. So for the past few days I have had to act like NHCG never existed and just returned urgent emails.

My headaches finally stopped on Sunday and though I still have a cold, I just had to come here to let you all know what's up because ordinarily I should have come here to announce that the IMPORT WINDOW FOR FEBRUARY is open and some of you that remembered have sent your orders in even though I am still getting around replying the emails... please understand my predicament; but if there are any others out there who have been waiting for my usual robust announcements of Import window openings and have refrained from sending in your orders because you did not hear anything, fret not, you can still place an order, I will extend the window to this weekend the 10th of this month.
Please help me out and be concise with your orders, let me guide you;
Simply check the shop NHCG page for products in stock, if what you want is available simply send me an email with the product name and the price listed there. I will send you an email with my bank details, upon payment confirmation I will send you the product.

If the product is unavailable and is an IMPORT, just state the name of the product(s), I will try and find it for you and send you the price, payment details and upon confirmation of payment, you should expect your product delivered to you latest at the end of the month but as you can see the products all came in 3weeks this time so give it time, these products are worth the wait.

The emails I discourage you my lovely readers from sending me so that horrible migraine doesn't attack me again from reading so much grammar are emails asking me to summarize ALL the over 100 posts I have put on this blog!! Or emails telling me to give you an answer to longer hair or telling me that you just don't know what to do, how did I get my hair this long!LOL I love receiving emails but these types of emails are what triggered my migraines because in my quest to answer them I find myself going to my archives, pulling up blog posts, copying, pasting, researching....ah ah, doing all the work for you after doing the actual work of blogging the information!

Please for ladies who are new to the whole hair journey thing or just don't know where to start, let me help you, instead of sending me a general email, just take your time to go through my blog post categories, I will try to make them even more concise so you simply click say Hair regimen for all my posts talking about how to build one, how tweak it to suit you etc or Hair products to see different product reviews and know what products I recommend... If after you have gone through the blog post categories you have specific issues with following through or questions pertaining to a post I have done then by all means feel free to email me about the issue or the question and I will gladly respond to your email. This will make life easy for everyone, emails will be responded to timely and I will not have migraine headaches.

In other news, I Hair triggered last weekend.

 God bless you Yolanda for making me know about this product. It deserves a separate post on its own, just know that it has made my last week before I retouch bareable. Right now I have been in school girl braids for the past week;

 had them on last week, hair triggered and re did them on Sunday.

By the way, I totally forgot to announce THE WINNER of the SPRUSH! You ladies that guessed I was 28 and 29 broke my heart!!! Here I was thinking I have a baby face :( well the winner is WONDER for guessing right, I am 26 years old!!! Dear Wonder please send an email to me with your real name :) and address for delivery of the sprush I promised. Thanks to all who participated and wished me a happy birthday!

Till my next post,
