Start out with a a small weave pattern right in the middle of your head...
 Then we went ahead to crotchet some colored kinky hair on the weaving...

Sleeked up the rest of my hair and Voila!!!

Hi Ladies,
How's everyone doing? Hope well!! I'm trying to get my blogging groove back, I have a bunch of posts lined up that I will be uploading soon so if you checked the blog and sighed that it's not been updated and said to yourself  'What's wrong with this Dabs sef?!!'. Please bear with me, things will get lively here once again, I promise!!


Now to my post, so I have been craving getting long big box braids for a while but had been reluctant because of all the discomfort that comes with getting braids...one day I'm going through Instagram and I see a hash tag- #knotlessbraids, I click and I am lead to braids that look like they are growing from the person's scalp. I was intrigued and so the next place I hurriedly went was? You guessed it, YOUTUBE!! I saw a tutorial, tried it out on my self, went to the hub and tasked my stylists to learn it in two days, they did (smart girls :) and we now offer it as a service at our salon!!


WHY KNOTLESS?
You see when you get regular braids done, the braider usually starts out the braid by wrapping the extensions round your own hair and creating a knot before braiding the section down, see the picture below and observe the knots ( where the arrows point to)

Now from my understanding those knots at the base of the braids not only cause breakage while the
braids are being done especially for those with fragile hairlines, but they also cause your new growth to be very dry as it grows out while you have the braids on, that's why after a few weeks of having regular braids on, when you take them out, the base usually has dirt and dandruff and is very dry leading to breakage....

With the knotless technique all of that mess is avoided,  the braids start out by being sectioned and the hair is braided just a little and strands of extensions are attached to the braid as the braider goes along- Think the Ghana weaving technique but this time with single braids...

As you can see the braids look like every day braids but the first thing I noticed as they were being installed was the fact that there was hardly any kind of pain or strain especially at my hairline  which was very refreshing, kept these in for just over a week and when I took them out my hair at the base looked great albeit they were not in for that long but still..will check on Folake who has kept here's for a month and see how her base is faring....

I don't know what your thinking but I'm thinking I have found my solution to getting braids!!

Hiya ladies,
It's been more than a minute since I set foot here! I feel bad!! I'm on a short holiday in Houston and I didn't know how over worked I was until I got here...I am basking in the chill...no waking up early, no hours in traffic, none of all the many responsibilities I have back home but I know myself soon I'll be missing life in Lagos and will be itching to get back...enough of me how is everyone doing?! Hope all is well!!

As watching youtube here is much faster and cheaper, I have been enjoying loads of Youtube viewing and recently I stumbled on 'Silk Pressing'...it's basically straightening natural hair with the perfect amount of heat and the right products...the results are magnificent...







And after watching tonnes of videos and tutorials especially on 4C hair (most coarse hair texture), Naturalistas here are a few tips for any of  you trying to get silky straight hair that will have people questioning if you've had a relaxer or not.

Tip 1- always moisturize and seal and then use a heat protectant...the amount of heat required can lead to damage if not careful...hair must be blow dried with a paddle brush or the blow dryer comb attachment...this will allow the natural hair to be stretched out fully.

Tip 2- divide hair into sections(preferably 4 sections) and apply a silk treatment/serum(usually weightless and prevents the hair shaft from swelling thereby preventing frizzing and humidity from affecting the hair) to the first section you will be working on...just a dime size will do, Blow dry that section this time with a round brush this will help voluminize the hair, use cool air to help seal the cuticle.

Tip 3- use a very thin cutting comb and section the freshly blow dried section into very thin sections and use a straightening iron at 450 degrees over that section as close to the roots as possible at least twice using the comb chase method(this method prevents tangles and allows the silk treatment to bond with each hair strand).




Once you are done with that section them move to the next section till you are done with the whole head.

Tip 4- Spray the entire head of hair with a light holding spray to prevent fly aways but don't be too heavy handed so the hair has movement. Remember to also sleek the edges with non- alcoholic gel to have the freshly relaxed hair look.

This method of silk pressing will be available at the hub- Savvy & Chic Salon -30 Norman Williams street off Awolowo rd, Ikoyi, Lagos from April as I am currently investigating which silk treatment line will best work for our hair type and weather to give lasting results. Its the weekend already and the last Day of the first half of this year!! God is Good!! Well today I am going for my first ever hair meet up and its called NATURALS IN THE CITY 3. Its the third time the organizers are doing this event and from the pictures I saw from the last one, its gonna be a fun event. So with the 'NATURALS' meet up on my mind, I remembered an article I read sometime ago on Curly Nikki talking about AFRICAN Vs AFRICAN AMERICAN HAIR PRACTICES.

Basically, the post and comments focused on how in Africa, our tie to hair is not as intense as in the West  because most of us had compulsory natural hair in secondary school and going natural to those in the West is more of a big deal and based on more of a conviction than for Africans who most likely have seen their natural hair. The writer pointed out that African's love for relaxer could have been borne from their wanting to disassociate from those secondary school years...

You see, the writer had a point but you need to read the hot debate that went down in the comments area between Africans and African Americans. It was very uncomfortable to read some comments by some of the Americans, they were offended by the notion that most Africans view hair as JUST HAIR and going natural was not some kind of declaration of independence. As you all know I am not natural so I can't speak for those who have decided to go natural but I can ask them(hee hee), African Naturals O, please whats was your motive for going natural?

Instyler Hair Straightener And Curling IronTill this article I thought it was more of a health thing when people went natural, didn't know for some or most Americans it was a deep rooted issue oh. But in my opinion, I agree with the comments by Africans that said here we are not that sensitive about hair. Its very true, most of us have seen our natural hair in its natural state or have people around who have natural hair so to most of us, we are not trying to quench our curiosity, again with the way hair is treated here you can see the value placed on it and its really low that it has become sad! Hair in Nigeria (let me speak for my country) its a matter of, if you have that's your luck, if you don't, Oya buy human hair, make we hear word! LOL. So you do not know the joy I feel when I know that I am changing peoples views on this hair issue and that there are other Nigerians starting to do the same thing, so much so we have a MEET UP?!!Wow, things are definitely changing for better.

I am not saying hair should be a seriously deep rooted issue for us oh, but it should be serious enough to make us take care of it, Shikena!!
