Hiya People!!
It's been toooo long!! Hope all is well with everyone!! I have been a very busy lady...taking time to slow down a bit...For those in the know, the 2017 Salon Day Out happened and I owe this blog a post fully loaded with pictures, we had so much fun! Thanks to all that came, volunteers that participated etc.

Now to this post...Since going natural, I have fully realized why natural hair has a bad rep with some people...dry afro hair in it's fully shrunken state can be intimidating and frustrating to deal with! That is why I quickly realized that to enjoy my afro hair I would have to keep my moisture levels up, enter the L.O.C.G METHOD!!!

So there's the L.O.C Method, There's the L.C.O method and now I'm giving you the L.O.C.G Method, this stands for liquid, oil, cream and glycerin!!! Good ol' glycerin has been saving me for a while, since my relaxed days but I used to only either mix it with water as a spritz or use it in my treatments...since I became natural, I use it directly on my hair. After I have used my hair spritz, leave in conditioner, my oil then I get a little glycerine and rub on my palms and use it to coat my hair from root to tip!!!

My hair truly stays moisturized and soft and supple and fluffy afterwards, watch the video of me showing the steps I take, the products I use and see how my hair looks afterwards.

I hope you enjoy the video, please subscribe as I plan on sharing more videos with you guys!! Feel free to comment below if you try this method.

Hiya Ladies,
Yes you read right!! I big chopped, chances that you don't already know this are slim because I put up this picture on Instagram and the Facebook page-

And the whole place erupted!!! I was half expecting this kind of reaction because though I had been contemplating going natural for a while (Since I had Mimi), I didn't think I could chop all my hair off!! I thought, I'd stretch it out and wait till my hair was long enough!

I'm still in a little shocked that I did this!!

BEFORE THE BIG CHOP

I was hoping I'd stretch to at least 18 months post and then big chop, I was going to make up my mind by my one year post relaxer date and start a transitioning series here on the blog, take everyone along with me on the journey to natural hair and then big chop ceremoniously amidst whistles and virtual confetti, singing and dancing from everyone on the blog because I would have at least eased everyone into this announcement...alas the story was not meant to be told that way!

I came back home last week Thursday, I had just taken out this hair the day before and deep conditioned;

The difference between the new growth and the rest of my hair was doing my head in!! I could not get past how annoying my hair especially at the back was as most of the straight hair had broken off...I was giving myself a pep talk, ''you can do this Oju, just 8 more  months...8 more months?!!!''
Called my sister and said, Mina I am big chopping today!! I was secretly hoping she would say, don't do it, just hold on! She said the exact opposite!!! She told me I of all people could pull it off and make short hair work...that was all I needed...I went straight from work to the supermarket, bought some products (more on that) and went home, set up the camera and BIG CHOPPED!!!

You can watch it on YouTube Here-

My heart was racing the whole time!! I couldn't even film cutting off the front of my hair which is the longest part because I was screaming the whole time!! My hubby who is not a fan of short hair was oddly quiet, he was just staring at me...I think, he might still be in shock as I type!

Anyways, I am here to explain my decision to some of you...I had mentioned my desire to go natural to a few of my relaxed/texlaxed friends and followers and the response was don't try it!! At some point, me not going natural became like I had to do so or else?!! I was not enjoying my texlaxed hair again and I wanted a change, a challenge, a new look but as a hair blogger I found myself stuck!! Someone even told me that my hair didn't only belong to me, it belonged also to my followers, a stretch but it had some truth to it. I felt all eyes were on me and making a decision freely about my hair was not possible...I had to break that cycle! I wanted to be free to be the blogger you all grew to love *wide grin* and be able to take you all along with me without feeling inhibited.

I wanted to enjoy being on a hair journey again!! I wanted to discover what my hair likes and doesn't again! I wanted to be able to excitedly blog about a hair product I discovered or a style I conjured...my texlaxed hair had outlived its tenure. After having three babies back to back, the fluctuating estrogen levels had affected my length retention. It was like my hair was yoyoing in lengths all the time and I strongly believe that it was because I had chemically treated more fragile hair.

Another reason, I had Mimi and though her hair is baby soft, taking care of it regularly made me rethink my notion that natural hair was just too much to handle! There are soooooo many great products to choose from that melt away the kinkiest of kinks...as the weeks passed by, I started to take note of how my new growth was feeling after using products, it was not as tough as I used to think it was, it was not as unmanageable as I grew to think it was, I was actually falling in love with the curls!!

I love a challenge and these few days of being natural have come with so many feelings...of regret, of panic, of determination, of excitement, of stress, of love for my curls but at the end of the day, it's too late to turn back now! I have to stay on this course and I as always will take you along!!

For those who think I have nothing to offer them again because they are relaxed and I am natural, you know that is not true!! Remember my mantra HAIR CARE IS HAIR CARE!! Don't deny your hair access to my years of research and knowledge on how to grow healthy long hair because I am natural now! I will keep discovering & uncovering healthy hair tips for everyone, so don't you go nowhere!!

I think what I am most excited about with this new phase is blogging about everything I learn, it's like  I'm in 2011 and just started blogging again!! I'm so excited!!! My next post will be a hair tutorial on how I style my hair and then I have a post planned at the first week mark, called MY FIRST WEEK AS A NATURAL and I plan on doing a length check in the post.

So ladies, who is ready to go on this phase of the journey together with me?!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Dear Blog readers,
This announcement has been a loooonnnngggg time coming!!!! I am so happy that I finally got the opportunity to become a certified Trichologist. For those who don't know what that is, Trichology is the study of the science of hair and the scalp with focus on related conditions that affect it's over all health and well being.

I literally stumbled on the opportunity late December when renowned Trichologist Dr. Kari Williams was offering the certification course for the new year...I had contacted her practice sometime early 2016 but at the time, they replied that they were not offering the course till much later and would keep me posted...the funny thing though, before they contacted me, I already stumbled on the announcement!! I was ecstatic...finally, I would get the chance to gain  a deeper knowledge of hair care and speak from a place of confidence about hair and the whole science that backs it!!

It was no walk in the park my dears!! I had so much reading to cover, had to log on to virtual classes and take notes like I was back at school and I have been away from school for close to ten years!! I was up for the challenge though!! At night when all the kids and my hubs had settled in, I would whip out my note pad and begin class...the beginning was HARD!! I am a Lawyer, so science courses, I did not take back at school...the introduction till about half way of this course was all science, the cell, endocrine system, bones, hormones etc...in my mind I was like, where do we talk about hair loss oh!! I soon realized the importance of the introductory part...it was building the foundation for the main topic- hair and scalp...every single component of our body is so beautifully intertwined and dependent on the other that it left me just in awe of God our creator!!

Finally after a certification exam, I got the certification to be a Trichologist as bestowed by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and I have already began my practice at Savvy Chic Hair Beauty Hub

When you visit, I will be able to make a diagnosis and recommendations as well as provide you with treatment remedies (where applicable) for the following;

Psoriasis
Dandruff
Scalp bacterial infections like- Eczema, Ring worm, Seborrhoea, Contact Dermatitis
Diffuse Thinning
All kinds of Alopecia (Hair Loss)-  Alopecia Areata, Traction Alopecia, Alopecia Oophiasis,
Androgenic Alopecia
Hair Anatomy conditions that may affect hair growth like- Pili Torti, Pili multigemini, Trichonodosis (single strand knots).
And lots more...

Some of the products for treating scalp conditions...

My First Client- I will be keeping her identity private, she is in her 30's and has early onset of Androgenetic Alopecia characterized by a progressive balding/hair loss, miniaturization of the hair follicles at the top to the crown of the head while the back (Occiput) remains unaffected...

Though she is genetically predisposed to this condition as her mother and sister both are experiencing this type of hair loss, we have started out with a plan to slow down the rate of hair loss using both medical and mechanical remedies, I hope to see a decrease in the amount of hair lost in the next 6 months and will bring an update here...

Basically, a Trichologist will answer those nagging hair questions you have had about your hair and any conditions affecting it's health you may have, the answers are all backed by science, you may not always get immediate results, but certain changes can be made to make the present condition much better.

If you'd like to meet with me for a one on one consultation or you'd like to recommend someone with a prevalent hair/scalp condition, please call 08090613325 to schedule an appointment and I will be sure to fit you/them into my schedule.

Thank you all for your support in advance!!

Hi ladies,
If you are visiting hair blogs like mine, chances are that you are very interested in starting to take proper care of your hair or at least thinking about it...if you literally just stumbled on my blog and sieved through the articles and pictures thinking, this can never be me!! All this fuss about hair? Nahhhh!!

Well my dear, I am here to give you 5 reasons why this 'fuss' is necessary especially for us African women who had been fed lies about our hair!

1. Your hair WILL respond!! Put two ladies in front of you- one who cares for her hair and the other who doesn't. Take a close look at the hair they have on their heads, it won't take you too long to figure out who cares and who doesn't care for her hair starting from just the look of the hair, the sheen and the smell ( a huge indicator)! Once you start caring for your hair, your hair strands become more manageable and malleable, they start cooperating and styling becomes easier...notice I didn't mention length, your hair will not grow long overnight but your strands will be stronger, more resistant to breakage and ultimately that leads to longer hair!!

2. You will preserve your edges!! As we age, our hair follicles tend to shrink which leads to production of thinner looking hair, this process can be greatly controlled and even delayed if you start caring for your hair early enough...studies show about 50% of women develop some kind of Alopecia (hair loss) later in life, ages 50 and above!!

3. Promotes a healthy lifestyle!! Just like with weight control, healthy, long hair thrives with a good diet, lots of water and regular exercise. Ladies who have honed the skill of balancing diet and exercise will see very successful results on a hair journey!!

4. Products are organic and safe!! It's a great time to be on a hair journey!!! The absolute best time because, now more than ever before, hair manufacturers are taking conscious note of the ingredients they are putting in their products, they are avoiding harsh chemicals, parabens, sulphates and all the bad stuff...if you are not on a hair journey, chances are that you are not taking note of the products with harsh chemicals that sip into the bloodstream which you may be using on a daily basis.

5. You get to be part of an amazing industry! This last point is just the entrepreneur in me speaking. Think about how all the numerous curl puddings and souffles, hair gadgets and accessories, would have been invented if not for hair journeys! The answer is plain and simple, we the consumers are the manufacturers and as a need arises, one of us steps up to the plate and executes! I think back on when I started blogging in 2011, my trip to a store like Walmart did not include browsing the hair care aisle because there were barely any products I could use, but now? The options are numerous, the access to these products endless and that's what I'm talking about!!

I hope someone is encouraged out there to start a hair journey TODAY!  :)

Hiya,
How's everyone doing!! Hope well!!! Ladies I know I was not the best blogger in 2016 and my blog format was quite confusing and so you probably gave up on reading this blog as much as you used to...well with this new format, I have enjoyed reading all my old posts and reading all the comments and interactions that used to happen in the comment area...I MISS THAT so much!!! *crying dramatically* and I need all of you to come back to me!!! Instagram has not helped matters and people will rather leave an emoticon than a comment these days (I am guilty as charged of this too), but I will work my little behind off and continue creating relevant hair content on this blog till all my old time faithfuls come back to me!!

What's up Gretel, How are you doing Kelly & Yolanda, Hi Joie, Enigma...remember me? Hey Lesley I know you are now a big madam on Instagram * Wide Grin.*

Okay enough dramatics, back to the topic at hand!! When the year begins, everyone begins to make resolutions about everything, they are important because they lay out goals and aspirations for the year ahead, keeping them is a whole other ball game but this year I am determined to keep these 5 'Hairsolutions' for healthier, lush hair...whose with me?!!

HAIRSOLUTION 1- EMBRACING WATER!! This year the plan is to do just that, I used to have an 8 litre plastic jug for water, I'd fill it with water and do you know how much of it I'll end up drinking at the end of the day? not up to a litre!!!! This year I have started drinking at least 4 litres of water each day for starters and so far so good!! Water ingested and applied on the hair and skin is so important for it's health!! So the usual water based hair moisturizers, leave in conditioners will remain a constant in my daily hair regimen this year. If you are thirsty? Drink water...If your hair feels 'thirsty'...don't apply an oil, apply a water based hair moisturizer!!

HAIRSOLUTION 2- SCALP MASSAGE TWICE A WEEK or more!!!! I am currently taking a course which I will disclose details in depth later in the year... now this course has opened up my eyes to how important scalp massages are!! Did you know the SCALP  is an acronym for Skin/Sabbaceous glands, Connective tissues, Aponeurotic Layer, Loose connective tissue and Pericranium.

It is essentially an extensive network of immensely dense tissue that contains nerves on end carrying blood and nutrition to and from from the head to the body and when you massage it, you stimulate it to work optimally!!! It's like when someone suffers a heart attack ...the doctors immediately apply pressure to the chest to get the heart pumping blood again!! Without an enough amount of pressure applied, that heart may stop permanently...our scalp needs pressure in form of gentle firm massages ( don't go banging your head with a comb oh because of Dabs!! LOL) to help stimulate it and keep the nutrients flowing.

I recommend scalp massages twice a week because I presume there will be a wash day at least once a week and a co- wash day or at least a day for intense moisturizing and sealing... even if you have braids or any other protective style, it's good to incorporate a scalp massage for at least 10/ 15 minutes twice a week or more with an oil of your choice.

P.S. Done right with the right tools, like the Savvy & Chic Ultimate grow scalp massager, it is such a relaxing and soothing experience!!

HAIRSOLUTION 3- CUT IT, CUT IT...IF THOSE SPLITS ARE WAY TOO MUCH, I'VE GOT TO CUT IT!!!
AYeeeee!!! Are you bouncing to my rap lyrics?!! Listen, gone are the days when it was all about length and it felt like a race to the finish line on my length check T- Shirt!!! I don't even know where that T-shirt is!!! This year I am embracing volume...I've done the downward growth thing for a while now...it has become boring...now let's move on up!!

I have invested in some sharp hair shears that I keep stored away in a dry, protected area so that it stays rust free and sharp for ONLY when I need to trim my ends which I now do every month!! If length is still your focus, that's fine...I won't recommend you trim every month like I do, rather trim on schedule every two to three months...naturals need to schedule regular trims too if you don't want your growth to remain stunted!!!

Split ends are sneaky and will show up silently and split up your hair shaft all while you are chilling...the year will end and you will be wondering why your hair looks exactly the same in terms of length or volume as it did in January!!

HAIRSOLUTION 4- TAKE A PICTURE...Speaking of tracking progress, I don't care how photographic I think my memory is, when it comes to hair seeing is always believing!! It's also like that with weight!! In my mind, I am still a skinny size 6 who can rock a tight size 6 pencil skirt and get away with it...in reality FOR WHERE!! Talk about a stuffed sausage about to burst open!!

Pictures will keep you on track, you don't have to share them if you are not a sharer like I am but at least you can see your progress or otherwise...I once had someone say to me she dreaded pictures with all her heart!! It ain't ever that serious...I am going to be tracking my hair journey this year with pictures as always!!

HAIRSOLUTION 5- DC, DC, DC...Who skipped on regular Deep Conditioning sessions last year? This writer HERE!!!

Towards the end of the year I was always soooo busy!! I couldn't find time to Deep condition in a week sometimes, your home girl was waiting two weeks to get proper DC's done!!! There were times I'd be under the steamer for like 5 minutes and get a call that I had to be somewhere and I'd just wash out the treatment and be on the run!!! I had to purposefully make out time to get the treatments done and make sure I was balancing moisture and protein!!

Once I got back on track, my hair even though it was 5 months post relaxer at the time, started to become more manageable especially the new growth!! That's why it marvels me when some naturals tell me they have never DC'd before or they say they've done it only once in the past six months.

Understand this, a Deep Conditioning treatment as the name implies serves the purpose of penetrating deep into your hair shaft and conditioning it to act better ( softer, detangled, more manageable). The only problem is that DC's are temporary and only last a few days, so they need to be done regularly to have lasting effects!! In 2017, I'm not skipping on my regular weekly DCs at all, even if it means doing them at home if I can't get to the hub!!

That ends my 2017 HAIRSOLUTIONS!!! As they say, talk is cheap!! I'm charging you all to join me to put all this plenty talk into action as I have already started doing, this year!!

WHO HAS HAIRSOLUTIONS TO SHARE?!! PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT BELOW!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hiya,
Hope you are all well! Two months left and the year is over!!! Who is retaining length!!! We will soon know the verdict!

Back to my topic, who like me has felt using an oil to seal your ends before you apply heat(blow drying, straightening, roller setting) is enough? You can imagine my reaction when I was browsing instagram the other day and came across a post that simply read in bold letters- OILS ARE NOT HEAT PROTECTANTS! I was like what?!

Went straight to consult with my friend google and to my greatest shock, the online resources were all saying the same scientific proven facts- using hair oils alone will NOT protect your hair from heat damage!

You see for the longest time after reading about smoke points of oils and how the higher the smoke point(meaning-the temperature at which an oil begins to break down into glycerols and free fatty acids and inevitably produces smoke) the better the oil's ability to tolerate heat, so for example Grapeseed oil and Olive oil have a smoke point of 485F and Avocado oil's smoke point is as high as 520F thus they have been advocated as great oils to prevent heat damage SOURCE.

 So you'd think that'd be enough protection no? NO!Apparently it's not enough for the following reasons;

Every good heat protectant should help prevent full heat transfer to the cortex of hair, preventing degradation of the protein bonds that largely lead to split ends and breakage.
While oils are great as lubricants, apparently they slow down drying so that if you are using say a flat iron, you have to pass it through more times when using oils and could end up doing MORE damage than protection!!

You want to know what a good heat protector should have?

1. Silicones- yeah cones, I know?!! Apparently Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone are must have ingredients in any good heat protectant because they are both thin, water proof and heat resistant man made compounds that when applied on the hair strands, coat the strands then evaporate while allowing the oils and nutrients on the strands to absorb, Demithicone is also known to have detangling properties- SOURCE

2. Hydrolized protein/silk amino acids- heat breaks down the protein bonds of our hair strands as mentioned before so a good heat protectant should have protein fill in any broken protein bonds and strengthen the hair to withstand heat damage.

3.Glycerin or any form of humectant to help attract moisture to the hair as the heat is being applied.

4. Propylene Glycol is also a chemical compound that attracts moisture to the hair strands.

5. Cetrimonium Chloride to increase tensile strength- SOURCE

6. Then your carrier oils for all their nutritional goodness!

These above products should be listed among the top 5 to 6 ingredients on any good heat protectant's ingredient list.

I did my home work and found this to be true, most heat protectants have most of the ingredients listed above; CHI silk Infusion, Tresemme Heat Tamer and in Naija I've found Organics Olive oil extra virgin smoother and polisher serum
Of the 6 must haves mentioned above, it has Dimethicone as the first ingredient, it also contains Phenyl Trimethicone, olive oil, hydrolized oat protein and silk amino acids #winning!!! I think it costs less than a thousand bucks for this 6oz bottle so that's a plus...Now there is NO EXCUSE again, a perfect heat protectant can be found in Naija and I dare say other parts of Africa!! European and American residents, you are spoilt for choice and have no excuse.

If you decide you want to use heat directly on your dry hair with no protection whether its blow drying, flat ironing, thonging, crimping, rollersetting....what you are doing to your hair is what too much sun does to leaves, it dries the heck out of them, so that when you touch dry leaves they simply crumble to pieces....Do you want crumbled hair? I don't think so, note to self I vow not to use heat on my hair ever again without a proper heat protectant!!

Of course the safest option will be avoiding heat totally but when you want to give into the craving of silky straight hair or bouncy robust curls, then you know what to do!!

P.S You guys, I have been really into chemicals and stuff lately, next week I'll dedicate an entire post to all that I've learnt, till then have a wonderful weekend!!

Thanks for stopping by!!

Hiya Ladies,
How's everyone doing?! Hope well.
The other day I was moisturizing the back of my hair and felt a single strand knot(SSK) and was reminded of one of those Saturdays at the hub, there must have been about 5 or 6 NHCG readers that day, we were just chatting on and on about HAIR!lol then a lady called Chinedu(hey girl, where have you been!) brought up the issue of single strand knots, she was like how crazy is it that a hair strand just decides it is going to knot itself into the tightest, smallest knot making untangling impossible and forcing you to cut it off!

As crazy as that sounds, that's what our hair does!! The curlier the hair, the more prone to SSKs it is that's why naturalistas tend to be the main bearers of this cross. But we relaxed/texlaxed folk deal with it also especially like I said if your hair is curlier or more textured and that's why I've noticed them more in the back area of my hair which is the kinkier, curlier fully texlaxed part of my hair.

So how do we deal with these darn knots....well we have to know the main cause so we can avoid aiding and abetting(Lawyer lingo :)

Dryness/Friction- think of your hair like a sponge or towel fibers, the drier it is the more likely it is to curl/ scrunch up and just a little friction, from clothes, the air, your hands can make it curl up so much it just knots and tangles up- as much as I'm trying to reason through this explanation, I'm as confused as you probably are as to why the knots are so perfect...but try it, rub your hand against a towel that has threads sticking out, you'll see knots form after sometime and you didn't knot them, the dryness and friction did!

So now we know the cause what can we do to prevent them;

SSK's usually happen around the last 4/3 inches of your hair strand so it will help if you take the extra pains to reapply a sealant like oils or Shea butter to those very ends especially if you are prone to dryness.

Avoid allowing your hair deal with any kind of friction like rubbing against clothes, leaving it out in rough air, hand in air syndrome( note to self), all these cause even more dryness that lead to SSKs.

Protect your hair while you sleep with a (Savvy Chic luxury satin sleep cap-*wide grin*). I think the fastest way to get SSK's is from sleeping! All the rubbing that takes place as you toss and turn on your regular cotton sheets without your hair covered will do you no good, by the morning, even if you moisturized and sealed before bedtime, your hair will be back to square 1- dry tangled hair! Especially if you sleep with air conditioning.

Finally, get your ends trimmed, those untrimmed mostly split ends are the biggest culprits for SSKs, I got an inch of my ends trimmed off yesterday to prevent SSKs because as I stated, once you get those knots, you have no choice but to cut your hair off at the knot and as tempting as it will be, please don't just snag them off with your fingers, use hair cutting shears and snip right above the knot.

With that this post is complete and will hopefully help those out there dealing with this issue, remember, the culprits are dryness and friction.

In other news, I texlaxed my hair and will be coming at you ladies with an update post tomorrow, I've had a major revelation and can't believe I'm just noticing it!! Have a great weekend ladies, for those in Lagos, stop by the hub let's gist hair and everything in between :), I'll be there for a few hours today!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing! If you are staring at the title of this post and are like WHAT? Did she mean transitioning to natural hair?! As that's the popular practice now, I understand but believe it or not, more and more Naija naturals have reached out to me in recent time asking me to help them as they decide to stop being natural to having healthy relaxed hair.

Most ladies that have approached me have been on both sides of the coin, they were relaxed became natural for a few years have gotten tired or too busy or whatever the reason and now want to be relaxed again and that's completely fine by me but where they go wrong is failing to realize that they have to prepare their hair for that change. Erroneously, people think you only need to transition to natural hair and don't need to transition to being relaxed, you just decide one day, buy a relaxer and put it on your hair and that's it! The issue with that approach is that you completely alter the texture of your hair in a few minutes, forever and your hair is left SHOCKED asking what just happened!

Right now I am on a top secret mission to transform one NHCG reader's hair...She came in to relax her natural hair and I have put her on a regimen to ensure that this time she gets it right!

Think about it, the whole premise of 'TRANSITIONING' to natural hair is really about managing two hair textures and in so doing, you get to know more about your hair, what products it likes and doesn't...same thing I'd recommend with going relaxed!
So here are a few tips for those of you who want to become relaxed (again :)

Before you transition, you'd have to be on a regimen and know what products your hair likes and doesn't. You know I'm of the school of thought that relaxed and naturals can mostly use the same products, my hair is living proof! So know what YOUR hair likes first and stock up on it.

Give your hair at least a month of intense deep conditioning every weekend and make sure you have trimmed ends( take out all split and uneven ends).

On relax day, don't go and grab a super strength relaxer because your hair is 'stubborn' oh! This time, we are changing things up, you should get a regular relaxer; no lye or lye-your choice. It's better to have under processed hair than over processed hair.

The relaxer should be applied STRICTLY according to the instructions written down for virgin hair relaxing. This is the only time you can relax to the tips and comb  just ONCE preferably with a medium teeth comb not a small tooth comb. Apply to your edges mid way if you have a full hairline or later if you have thin edges, smooth with the back of your comb only. Wash out thoroughly once the time is up!

Follow the the relaxer treatment with a protein based deep condition after washing and conditioning the relaxer to infuse strength into your  strands.

Once you are done, dry your hair in a roller set or straightner (without smoke and flames! Lol)-this step is so your ends are straight and can be further trimmed if necessary.

And with that, the journey continues!! Nothing much should change, go on with your regimen, trim when you need, touch up advisably after 12 weeks.

As for styling, that's where the main adjustment is, your twist out won't look quite the same, your braid outs or updo's too so know that before you take the plunge...

Please, please and please, don't relax your hair and think, well I'm not going to bother with all the things I used to do as a natural and expect your hair to flourish...nope, sadly it won't and you will be back to square one and will blame the relaxer and go natural again, get tired and go relaxed again only to get it damaged and the cycle continues...whew! My head is aching from just typing that!! Please don't do it to yourself!

Hair care is a life long dedication that if we were taught when we were little girls, will be absolutely no big deal now, but since we weren't we think it's more work than it really is, I'm begging you to change that thinking and put in some effort, no matter how little and you will see the difference.
With that, I have come to the end of my post, hope it helps those who have reached out to me about becoming relaxed.

PS. Our magazine is fully loaded in Calabar, off to Jos, Osun, Ebonyi and Benin, Fully loaded in Abuja, Port-Harcourt and of course Lagos!! If you reside in other States and are interested, what are you waiting for, becoming an agent is super easy!! Email me to find out how!!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? I got asked to treat the topic of hair and protecting it during the harmattan season and I jumped at it as I was already thinking of doing a post on the topic.

So in the West there are 4 main seasons; winter, spring, summer and fall. In West Africa there are however  just 2 main seasons, the rainy season and the dry/harmattan season- when the Northeast trade wind blows from the Sahara into the Gulf. This season starts at the end of November through Mid- March..

So right now we are very much in the harmattan season, during this season, our hair and skin get a hard hard hit!! Lips will start drying up and if care is not taken, cracks will form and even sores for those really badly hit, your skin will be ashy and dry and for those with dry skin, scaly and itchy. In the same breath, your hair cannot get too moisturized in this season. If not attended to, your hair will break at the slightest touch, your split ends will multiply and your edges can disappear!!

When I started to notice these changes I went into combat mode and I have been fighting harmattan hair ever since and plan to come out on top. In this post, I will share a few things I am doing- nothing beyond the usual but its the intensity, frequency and consistency which I have focused on to make me come out on top at the end of March!

Strategy 1; My focus is Moisture over Protein! As I stated earlier, your hair cannot be ''too moisturized'' in this season!! You think you are going to get away with just 2 pea sized pumps of hair moisturizer and a dime size of oil to seal in the moisture? No Ma'am :) You will need to increase the amount of moisturizing and sealing sessions in A DAY to get past this dry season successfully!!

I'm sure ladies that are busy working are giving me the side eye-LOL! You see I'm just being real, moisturizing and sealing your hair has to now be 3 to 4 times a day, if you are busy  then the perfect solution to this is to make a moisturizing/sealing hair spritz- mix your favorite moisturizing  (especially the thick ones- you don't want heavy products weighing your hair down since you will be using them quite often), mix in some light weight oil(olive, jojoba, sweet almond, grape seed) and if you want even extra moisture, mix in a conditioner or leave in conditioner and lastly a small amount of water- Have the spritz bottle with you in your bag, after a few hours in the day, check to feel if your hair is dry- ALWAYS CHECK FIRST ( Let your hair speak to you is what I always say) If it feels like you haven't applied anything on your hair all day- which is most likely how it will feel because of Mr. Harmattan, then shake your spritz to ensure its mixed well and spritz all over your hair from root to tip, spritz the mix until you have coated every strand without it being soaking, dripping wet! The trick is spritzing your hair from a distance, so the spritz lands on the hair like mist rather than massive rain drops :)

So we've got the daily  hair care strategy down, my next strategy is all about infusing even more moisture in your hair. During this period more than ever, you cannot go long periods with weaves/extensions in your hair. I understand its the holidays, everyone wants to look good for Christmas and the New Year and that's fine but please don't let your REAL HAIR suffer for it if not you are going to spend the next year nursing back your hair to health. My advice for lovers of extensions, go 2 weeks MAX with them and before you get them done do one major protein treatment, I'm talking eggs, henna, mayonnaise, coconut oil, cholesterol conditioner- anything that will infuse strength in your hair to withstand the aggression of the pulling and tugging that comes with extensions. While you have the extensions in for the two weeks duration, you will deep condition your hair be it weaves or braids and that deep condition will be all about moisture we are talking using a moisture based conditioner, moisturizing oils, glycerin... for hours or under a steamer and you should do that twice in the two week duration, once the weave/extensions is out, please repeat the protein treatment following the uninstall to give back your hair the strength it lost during the process.

For us non weave wearers, the work is more...doing deep conditioning moisturizing treatments is now TWICE A WEEK for me! But again its because of the texture and length of my hair, if you have studied your hair enough you will know how often it needs deep conditioning but generally once a week in this season is advised. Another way I am adding moisture to my hair is co-washing( especially when I do not have time to  deep condition- I simply douse my hair with conditioner for a few minutes in the shower, put hair in a shower/cholesterol cap and rinse out just before I get dressed. Co-washing I like to do at least once a week so that's 2 conditioning processes in a week usually on Fridays into Saturdays( overnight deep conditioning) Wednesday (co-washing) and then repeat the process of deep conditioning on Friday into Saturday. If my hair is feeling really dry, Monday I will do a co-wash too. And the cycle continues.

Today when I was done with the deep conditioning process my hair was sooo grateful!!

I could see the shine...Now as for protein, I will be doing that once a month so out of 4 weekends in a month, 3 weekends will be for  moisture and 1 for protein, that's what I feel my hair needs (my post partum shedding has stopped, YAYYY) , the way your hair feels, sheds, breaks will let you know how much protein it needs but generally, 2 protein treatments in a month is just right.

That's that for treatments, let move on to styling...You cannot over manipulate your hair in this season. Your hair will not have any of that especially your ends, so you just have to find creative ways to style your hair that will not involve too much combing, brushing or tugging and for me that style is a meeeeannnn twist out or braid out- I like to incorporate a non-alcoholic hair gel for a more solid hold like the Ecostyler gels. With twists-outs I find that running my hand through my hair is impossible and combing it takes out the waves so I just keep my hand out of my hair, I can pack the twist out up, to the side, re-braid it, do whatever  but if my hair was straight, I'd be brushing and combing to put every strand in place. Now that's my go to protective style, there are other styles you can explore, like buns, chignons, big braids, clip in extensions etc. I am compiling looks for my look book soon, stay tuned...

Finally during the harmattan season pay even extra attention to the very tips of your hair. You will need to coat them with a vitamin E and B packed oil like Argan and castor oil, just before you go to sleep(your hair regenerates while you are sleeping) coat your very ends, I'm talking the last 2 inches of your hair with a small amount of oil, its the extra TLC those ends need to stop them from splitting any further, it will derive the same effect as applying a lip balm on your lips before you sleep to prevent cracked lips. You can use the oil on your edges as well if your hairline is receding and of course further protect the whole hair and preserve the oils/shine with a satin bonnet/sleep cap.

With these tips my dear friends, we can overcome this dry, stiff aired hamarttan season that is upon us!! In other news, the demand has arisen and I have succumbed but not fully...well, I am opening a flagship store for my Savvy & Chic Hair Beauty Hub;

and I have decided to create a little appointment only salon area in there! Appointment only because I want to ensure that I am actively involved, it will be the salon day out experience all over again---with consultation, I will help guide ladies, put them on a regimen, recommend products and all this I will do in front of the stylist I will choose to train. Hopefully, I can find someone not set in her ways, willing to learn the new way of doing Naija hair. I will give this my best shot and with your support ladies, I am praying its a decision that I will be proud of... more updates will come on this project, there's a lot of work to do because I am scheduled to launch this space next month so its crunch time, heads down...can't wait to show you all the finished product...

Thanks for all your support!!Feel free to let us know if you have any harmattan combating tricks...

Hiya,
Its been a while, hope all is well at your ends! I just finished relaxing my hair after a 12 weeks stretch (update coming up)-

Let me just say- My hair was done with me! Just one more week added to the stretch and I would have been dealing with a set back.

The decision to get a relaxer today inspired this post especially after I recalled what happened to one of the reader's of this blog; Folake at the last salon day out. After Folake had stretched for 8 entire months hoping she would retain tonnes of growth, the reverse was the case, the stretch had taken a major toll on her relaxed ends and she suffered a major set back and had to cut about five inches of hair off!!!

So here are the 5 signs my hair gives me when it has reached its maximum stretching potential;

1. My new growth begins to matt together and form dread locks!!
source

Lol yes oh, it literally gums together at the roots and at that point the only thing that can save my strands will be patience, the tail end of a comb and my beloved main and tail detangler or water/glycerin mix! When I find more of these baby dread locks forming in regular intervals, I know my hair is reaching its 'breaking'point!

2. Excessive Breakage usually at the line of demarcation( where the new growth and relaxed hair meet). Once there is uncalled for breakage e.g you pass your fingers through your hair and there's hair all over your fingers, your hair might just be telling you something especially if you have been moisturizing and sealing regularly.

3. Your roots and scalp have become unreachable! You simply cant get enough hair products on them, they just keep absorbing the products and going back to square one and if you want to really pile on the products, your relaxed hair is left weighed down- That's where I was all week long- my new growth was simply telling me this stretch should be over already!!

4. Your ends start to look scraggly and limp while the root till mid-shaft of your hair is full and puffy. You cannot afford to ignore your hair when that's happening because its another sign that your hair is simply breaking off  at it week points by the day.
source
What will happen is that you will be left with very uneven ends after you finally relax the hair and most likely have to cut them all off to regain the fullness again!

5. Your edges and nape hair are in shambles!!

source

This should have been number 1! This happens when your edges start to take a step back and your nape hair starts to form knots that you end up simply pulling off- that was me before I started my hair journey, I still fight the urge to roll my nape hair up into knots and pull them out and I find that when my hair is really due for a relaxer, it gets even tougher to avoid knots in that area. If its becoming impossible to smooth down your edges, don't use all your power on the poor hair brush to force your edges into submission, you will loose them all! Simply realize that it just might be time to get a relaxer!

Now if you are transitioning to natural hair and you don't want to big chop, you can use these signs as an indication that maybe its time to take the plunge and just cut the relaxed ends off because there is no point ushering unhealthy natural hair into your life. The ultimate goal should be having healthy and strong beautiful hair and it definitely can be achieved ladies if you look out for these five signs- Just let you hair speak to you!

Hope Lagos NHCG readers can make it to the Salon Day out tomorrow!

I almost cancelled it as I have been ill all week long but I know a few ladies are banking on me to relax their hair and for that reason I am making this salon day out happen, please feel free to come with all your hair questions and I will do my best to answer them. If you want to purchase products/ indulge in hair treats, I have been informed that the POS at the Salon is out of order so please bring cash. Thanks so much for support!!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? Hope fine! Well I am doing alright, last weekend on Saturday I went for a hair event organized by The Kinky Apothecary a natural hair blog, they brought in a Hollywood based natural hair stylist called Felicia Leatherwood.

I got to the event venue just in time for the talk, settled in excitedly and then it started... 'How many ladies here have been natural for at least a year?'- Hands were raised... 'How many of you are transitioning to natural hair?'- A few more hands, then I waited perhaps she would ask how many ladies had relaxed hair...well she didn't! I took that in good stride and ignored the feeling of being an unwanted visitor; maybe it was an oversight because I did get an email sent to my mail box inviting me for the event and surely everyone knows my hair is relaxed and I am loving it!

I listened attentively to everything she said and took notes and was later joined by my pal Bas Bas :)

Berry of the blog Berry Dakara was sitting right behind me-Lovely to have met you!!

For the most part I was all there and guess what?!!! EVERYTHING Ms Felicia had to say which I must say was very educative and knowledgeable is EVERYTHING I say, Megz from the famous You tube channel Ulovemegz blog says, the same thing Jen of Just grow already blog says, same thing Lesley of Fresh Lengths blog says, same things said over at African Naturalistas blog and at Curly Nikki's blog-  These are all ladies with beautiful relaxed and natural hair alike!! And it felt good to hear her say these things because it was a validation of all that I talk about on the blog but for some weird reason there seems to be a subtle demarcation being created that gives the impression that achieving healthy and long relaxed hair is an entirely different procedure and in some circles its absolutely unachievable!!

On Saturday I am afraid to say it seemed like I was in such a circle! At one point Ms Felicia stated that relaxers cause cancer! A claim that has no conclusive study. What she said made me do some research and the only link with relaxers and any disease-Uterine Leiomyomata (uterine fibroid-tumors that grow in the uterine) is when women suffer scalp lesions and burns from using hair relaxers and the chemicals seep through their bodies and into their urine !! Meaning that when the relaxing process is done properly, see my post on proper relaxing techniques  HERE and you do not suffer burns or lesions you are free from harms way a point she failed to mention... At the end of the talk a lovely lady called Mo with beautiful curls sitting by me;

leaned in and said 'I am sure you are wondering why you came, they didn't talk about relaxed hair'...and she was right! Just imagine if I was a curious relaxed lady coming to see what a hair meet up is all about, I'd have left there with the notion that my relaxed hair is not good enough!! Recently I have also been told by l quite a few ladies who just went natural that they did so because they didn't think they could have healthy long relaxed hair...

So this is my submission- the demarcation is totally unnecessary! Hair Care is hair care whether you are relaxed, natural or otherwise. It is my duty to make this clarification because it is not being made enough, if you moisturize and seal your relaxed/natural hair regularly with the right products, using the right techniques, deep condition your relaxed/natural hair regularly, keep the protein/moisture balance of your relaxed/natural hair, protect the edges and tips of your hair with protective hairstyles-IT WILL GROW HEALTHY AND LONG!! Its that simple- avoid the hype and do what works best for you no matter what choice you make with your hair.

I feel the only major difference between relaxed and natural hair is in the styling-relaxed hair generally has less volume and suffers less frizz while natural hair on the other hand gives you fuller locks to work with but you have to deal with frizz and shrinkage and that's it!! The procedure for actually growing hair and retaining the growth is THE EXACT SAME PROCEDURE no matter the state of your hair- again for more emphasis-The gospel is the same, unfortunately because hair business is big business, propagators of the natural movement have tried to sell a different notion that comes with all these special 'natural products' and tools but don't get carried away, these products are simply hair products and will work for your hair just the way it is!!

I am sorry if I have stepped on a few toes with this post but sometimes some things need to be said, in naming my blog Naija Hair Can Grow, my message is clear and I mean it and encourage all my Naija ladies and all ladies out there who are on the crossroads with their hair to believe that it can grow if you join me on this journey, if you are consistent, if you are using the right tools and techniques NOT simply if you go natural- by all means go natural if you want to have natural hair and prefer your hair that way but please please don't do it simply because you feel that's the ONLY way you will have healthy long hair!!

With these few points of mine I hope I am able to convince you that Naija Hair Can Grow and Hair Care is Hair Care!!! :)

Thanks for the support!!
