Hiya,
As I promised, I'm here with my wicked post relaxer weekend hair treat which I indulged in 2 Saturdays ago and I'm also here with the weekend treat I indulged in last week Saturday. Both treats left my hair strong, moisturized and fortified!!

Weekend Treat 1- Post relaxer;
After every relaxer treatment I infuse my strands with protein to counter what ever keratin/protein I lost during the treatment and to fill my strands with protein bonds thereby strengthening them.

So for this protein treat, I used an egg;

The Silk dreams Moisture deep conditioner; to balance out the protein

Regular Herbal essence conditioner-for more moisture balance

And finally added some Hair Trigger!!

I mixed them all together;

applied the mix from root to tip and covered my hair with a paper bag...waited around for an hour and then rinsed out...I did not shampoo my hair, I used some Roux Porosity Control conditioner to co-wash and that was it.

I decided to rollerset my hair myself;

used the opportunity to treat my scalp to a hot oil treatment using castor oil, grapeseed and almond oil mixed together. Took my rollers out, pin curled the curls when they had cooled down and covered them up with a satin cap;

This method is by far the best method of having curls I have tried to date!! it allows me spend just about 45mins in the dryer rather than 90mins, as long as you can pin curl properly, your curls will come out perfect the next day, just like you just rolled them...see results!

Weekend Treat 2- This past weekend!
I decided to focus more on moisture this weekend by building my hair treat on Aloe Vera juice-read benefits of Aloe Vera juice below;
Aloe vera juice, with its excellent moisturizing properties can serve as a natural conditioner to deeply moisturize the hair strands.

It works as an excellent hair conditioner for dry and damaged hair.

One of the most important benefits of aloe vera is prevention of hair loss and stimulation of hair growth, the enzymes found in aloe vera gel and juice act as hair growth stimulators.

It can also help to control dandruff. To get healthy hair and dandruff free scalp, you can apply the gel or juice of aloe vera on your scalp before taking a shower, leave it on for about half an hour, and then rinse it off.

The juice or gel acts as a natural astringent and will rid your hair of excess oil, without the use of harsh chemicals.

Source; here
There you have it...isn't God just magnificent? giving us all these natural options to use to care for our crown of glory!

Anyways....I mixed some pure Aloe Vera juice with castor oil;

Some Mayonnaise-just to have a little protein in there;

Pure Glycerin for more moisture;

 And decided to put the watery mix in a mist spray bottle...

Spritz my hair from root to tip till it was drenched in the mix;

Tilted my head over and massaged my scalp making sure my scalp was absorbing the mix as much as possible.

Then I held my hair up and covered it with a cholesterol self heating cap for about an hour.
SAY CHEESE :)

When the time was up I simply rinsed out the mix and cleansed my scalp with dudu osun black soap just to get the Aloe Vera juice properly out of my hair...focused on just my scalp though...followed the wash with Roux Porosity control as usual and then a cold cold water rinse to seal my hair cuticles...

When I was done, I let my hair air dry using Organix Cherry Blossom ginseng miracle defrizzant cream, went out with Lion King hair, came back home and while I perused instagram (my instagram acc by the way is naija hair can grow, follow me :), I stumbled upon this hair style posted on Curl Box which I tweeted about, view my tweet to see the gorg hairstyle! HERE

If you want hair style inspiration and you are natural, check out curl box...thank me later :)

I loved it and immediately tried it out using twists instead...

It was really easy to do (one big flat twist round your head forming a halo) and turned out simple and elegant...the next day being Sunday, sure enough, your home girl redid the twists and wore the style to church...

Got a compliment from a really pretty down to earth YouTube guru I bumped into...was surprised because most Naija girls just keep looking at you without saying a word or even smiling...do you get the stares too when you are sporting a different style?! Oh the worst is when they finally say something and it's 'is that your hair?' and you say;'yes' with a smile and their response is hmmm or a disappointed OK!! I start wondering if the person asked hoping to hear NO...lolzzz some Naija ladies are funny!!

Sorry for the digression!! Back to the hair treats...if you take a close look at the two treats you will notice that the first treat was protein based as I stated BUT not without a little moisture to balance things out and if you look at the second treat done the following week, it was all about moisture BUT not without a little protein to balance things out...that's the way to go about these hair treatments...don't do hair treatments for the sake of doing them, follow this simple formula;
A Protein based treat with a lil' moisture this week
A Moisture based treat with a lil' protein next week

When in doubt...don't concoct, use mayonnaise/cholesterol deep conditioner(manufactured by hair product companies) for your protein and regular conditioner, glycerin and hair oils for moisturizing..just tweak the quantities to get the balance each week.

If you want to concoct like I love to do, make sure you know the purpose/ benefit of every ingredient you have in the mix and where it fits in the protein/moisture scale.

Hope my explanation and this post clears things up for those still figuring out incorporating weekend treats into their hair regimen.

Thanks again for stopping by

Hiya,
Hope all's well ladies! As you all should know, the the NHCG 6inches of growth challenge is still on and just as a reminder, the star prize for the lady that retains the most growth at the end of the challenge which is in December is $100 worth of hair product imports!! There will also be NHCG goody bags up for grabs for ladies who came close to our 6inches goal!!

Now if you are gunning for the star prize and you have been listing the products you would buy when you win...you might want to add this product up for review on that list!!

So when I was in the US during the first week of March, I saw the SoftSheen Carson Optimum Amla Legend Billion Hair Potion at Sally's, it caught my attention and I immediately put this post to the test.

First the makers soft sheen Carson's have been in the hair product business for ages-CHECK

Then I decided to read the ingredients; the first 3 ingredients were Aqua, glycerin, arginine and then down the list was phyllanthus emblica fruit extract! CHECK
We all know the benefits of water and glycerin; ultimate hair moisturizers!

Arginine caught my attention because it sounded like the glycerin * wide grin* and upon further research, this is what I found; Arginine has several characteristics that may benefit hair follicles, it is a semi-essential amino acid, It boosts nitric oxide levels, which promotes circulation and aids in the release of hair growth hormones-many nuts contain arginine including peanut, almonds, cashew, walnuts, peacans, check here for other sources- interesting!

And then the fruit extract I'm guessing is the Amla fruit. The pack states the powerful properties of Amla calling it a super fruit from India, packed with anti-oxidants, rich in vitamins and minerals ...

At the store I read the claims; the potion was described as a formula with Amla oil, arginine and strengthening CERAMIDE ( now that really caught my attention-read more about ceramides here) that intensely conditions and wraps the hair to help promote visibly thicker, fuller hair- SOLD!
I picked one up and strolled excitedly to the counter! Since then I have silently used this product, waiting to see if it was worth a review and let me just say it qualified!

You know I'm always skeptical about all these names manufacturers give their products, first it was hair trigger growth elixir now it's Amla legend rejuvenating ritual with ceramide and arginine billion hair potion( major tongue twister) but now I'm loosening up after seeing how great hair trigger makes my hair feel! Aside from the name, this product at 55ml is quite affordable, great for travel and the best part of it? It's light and literally gets absorbed by your hair and scalp!!-That I love!!

The directions say apply several drops on dry hair and scalp especially on damaged areas and massage gently for scalp stimulation, do not rinse out and use twice a day. It also states that it's for ALL hair types, so naturals you are included!

I have followed the directions, though I use it mainly at night on my scalp because it comes with a dropper( great for product use control);

 I simply drop a few drops of the potion on my palms or straight on my scalp and massage, its absolutely non-greasy;

 So I literally see the potion get absorbed which makes it great for night time because you don't have to deal with oil spills or acne!!

My hair was not exactly unhealthy when I purchased this product so I can't say for now if this product has contributed to making it visibly thicker and fuller but I will say my hair is those two things and so at least this product has not made it worse or failed in its claims, I would like to see how it can transform thinner hair...might put it to the test actually! Ok I will put it to the test....

You know there will be a NHCG June Halftime meet up... Well if you are a reader of this blog and you live in Lagos and know you will be around from the 1st to 2 nd week of June to attend the meet up and your hair is thinning and you want to take part in this test, simply send a picture of your hair and your name to my email daboju@yahoo.com and I will send you a FREE bottle of this potion but you must first be OK with having your starting picture put up on the blog, you must use this potion as directed on the pack till the JUNE meet up and in June, you must attend with your potionified hair and have us examine if this product worked!!

I will pick one person that needs it the most or I just might make you all the judges...we'll see! interested ladies you have till Sunday the 21st to send in your pictures, this potion might just be the answer to your receding hair line...you never know!

SHOP NHCG will stock this potion at the end of the month as well as their 1001 oils cream night wrap(can't wait to try this myself);

So feel free to give them both a try...

Thanks for the support ladies!!

Have a lovely weekend

Hiya,
So I am back again with another hair product I have found that is made in Naija, not packaged here, not imported here but MADE here by our very own. The aim of this series really is to review products to find out if they are diamonds in the rough or just amongst the sea of products that should be trashed with petroleum oil, paraffin and all the bad chemical orshirishi.

Unfortunately this product is deep in that sea!!

 My first encounter with this product was a few months ago when my son's nanny came back from one of her breaks and she was smelling like she had just visited a herbalist!! The smell was strong and pungent...I was like what is smelling? Then she said she had just used this product called Damatol that came highly recommended at a salon she visited while she was off...when I looked at the ingredients of this product I just shook my head!!

B4 I tell you all what's in it, I have to tell you why I decided to write about this product; A few weeks later my Hubs came back from the barbers and guess what he had in his hand??? Damatol!! I literally screamed!! He told me the barber sold it to him and said its the hair treatment men are using now to prevent their hairlines from receding!! Then it was my Mum's turn to be damatolized! Last month on her way to London, my aunt asked her to please bring a product that will work for her hairline and my mum absolutely forgetting that she has a daughter that runs a hair blog...decided to get her a product that came highly recommended from her salon...and it was none other than Damatol!! Now that's when I really panicked!! This product has some how gotten into all circles and it has little or nothing to offer!!( harsh but true).

You want to know the first ingredient it contains?

Petroleum Jelly

The second ingredient?

Mineral oil

The third?

Lanolin!!

These are all very heavy oils that offer little or no nutrients to your hair but just literally sit on your hair preventing anything else from coming in or going out!! It's bad enough when a product has 1 of these in it but with a product that has 3 of such ingredients you have to wonder how much of the good stuff it really contains.

Well the other ingredients stated include; Shea butter, peppermint oil, coconut oil, menthol, sulphur and 'Damatol concentrate'( what's that?)

As I stated earlier, I really really wonder how much of the good stuff is in this product, just take a look at it!

I know how over bearing Shea butter is, it's really hard to conceal Shea butter when it's in a mix except it only makes up 1% or less of the product, same goes with peppermint oil which has a very strong unmistakeable mint smell and coconut oil. This product smells NOTHING like any of these oils rather it has that pungent sulphur smell which I suspect makes up most of what's in it.

It has absolutely no water in it so it's supposed to be a sealant but with all those insoluble, heavy oils that just sit on your hair and clog your scalp, this product is not ideal as a sealant either!

In sum, this product is NO diamond in the rough!! It has nothing to offer to your hair in the least even if you have dandruff, eczema or ringworm as it claims...the oils won't let it work effectively!Please if you have it or any product with similar ingredients, dump it! This is not a diss to the manufacturers, not at all! It's not the worst product, they just need to take out the bad stuff and put more of the good stuff in there, they can keep the sulphur to treat the dandruff and the menthol to soothe any irritation but they should think of adding tea tree oil, maybe olive oil( its cheap and available), more Shea butter and tell us what the heck Damatol concentrate is! Even if the price tag for the product increases after these changes, their consumers will understand and appreciate it when they start to see that the product actually works! Hmmm Or does it work? If you have used the product and it worked feel free to let us know below but I highly doubt it! So young Lady that asked about this product in the comment form on the 10 THINGS TO STOP RECEDING HAIRLINE POST, hope this post answers your question.

That's that for this month's diamond in a rough series. My next post will be about my very wicked(in a good way) post relaxer weekend hair treat!! Stay tuned for that...

Thanks for stopping by,

Hiya,
The long awaited Protective Style Look Book is ready!! Came back from work yesterday and had a surge of energy, I put some makeup on and got down to trying out some hairstyles I had admired from the 2013 NYFW FALL runways. So without much ado, below are the hairstyles from the runway and how I recreated them, feel free to recreate them for yourself :)

Bradgley Mischka;

RODARTE

CAROLINA HERRERA;

I DECIDED TO TUCK MY ENDS UNDER INSTEAD!

JASON WU; Loved Loved this look, clean and sophisticated!!

LOOK 5; Im sorry I have no clue whose look this is but I like it, takes me back to the 90's when gel was reigning! I used pure aloe vera gel to sleek down the front of my hair so it would not have the hardened gel look!

 LOOK 6; Again I have no idea whose look this is; you can click the source for further inquiries, but its such a Fulani girl look, I love it! made me feel like I was a yarinya from Hausa land...LOL

I decided to braid down my ends instead of having them in a bun like in the picture

Thats all for now ladies, I had a few more looks but after a long day's work, taking pictures and smiling like a geek wore me out!! I am going to do a few protective style HOW To's for people who want guidance in achieving some of the looks from the NYFW runway and even some celebrity looks. Hope you enjoyed this post!!

In other news, I joined Instagram...me and technology are like oil and water, funny that Im a blogger right?! Well this platform makes things plain and simple...luckily instagram seems easy too...anyways, if you want updates on my hairstyles and NHCG in general, feel free to find me on Instagram; DABSNHCG

In other other news, I think some of you are mind readers on this blog....I was writing a Diamond in a rough post on thursday (the post should be up tomoz) and then I got a message that a comment was left on one of my posts, opened to read the comment and lo and behold, the lady was asking about the exact same product I was writing about!!! I like suspense so be patient ladies... come back and find out which product I am talking about...

Thanks for stopping by!!
