Above is a picture of me on Thursday 16th Dec, 2010 at my Bachelorette party and that’s my natural hair!

Below is me on Friday 17th Dec,2010 the day of my Traditional Wedding; I have CLIP IN extensions in my hair, clipped  and thonged that morning!!

Clip in's side swept and pinned!
By Saturday 18th Dec, 2010 at my White Wedding(below), my extensions are out, my hair is restyled by ME (if I might add, hehe) and the clip in extensions are re-purposed to create a bun( a style I will show you all how to achieve under my wedding hair segment next month)

The aim of my little intro here is so you appreciate the versatility of clip in extensions! They have been in the market for a while especially abroad, celebrities like Paris Hilton and Tyra Banks are open about their use of clip in extensions and clip ins are sold everywhere in the States, Sally’s Beauty even sells just the clips so you can attach them yourself to extensions.

When I discovered clip in’s I was estatic!! Finally a way to get length through extensions without the pain and rigour of sew ins! I immediately did my research and that’s when I found out about the separate clip purchase method! Being a do it yourself babe like I am, I purchased my clips, sewed them unto some extensions and rocked my clip ins.

After my Masters Degree in the States, I came back and did not find any clips in Naija, and after getting so many ladies interested in clip-ins during my wedding, I decided that I would find a supplier for clips on my next visit to the States and I did when I visited in March and so INTRODUCING;

CLIPS for Clip-in Extensions!! Below is a quick picture tutorial on how to get your very own personalized clip in extensions!!!

GRAB your extensions!!

THREAD a weave needle!

Let the inner weft of the extensions face you

Align the Clip hole to the hair weft!

Pass the thread through the clip hole and through the hair weft!

Secure the stitches with a knot and Viola!!

Repeat the above steps, adding as many clips you need on that hair weft( 3 clips are usually enough)

The next step is to part your hair like this;

Now you are ready to put your clips in; snap open the clip like this;

And then hook the clip combs to your hair;
Snap Clip closed, repeat step with other clips and viola; 1 track of extensions in!!

Why Clip-Ins?

As I illustrated earlier, wouldn’t you like to have extensions in today and out tomorrow? Allow your natural hair breath a little and be moisturized instead of being stuck with sew ins for weeks?

Then there’s the added benefit of having your hair extensions last much longer because they are not constantly being slept on(you can sleep on clip ins once in a while but taking them out remains an option), brushed or combed!

The Clips on the extensions also are great because they will remain useful even after the hair isn’t! because they are sewn in on the tracks, they can be reused by taking them off old extensions and using them on new ones!!

You don’t have to leave your hair out either, you can braid your hair down as you would do on a sew in and clip the extensions on the braids!!(see pic below)

Did I mention you save a tonne of money!!!all the money from salon visits to get a sew in will be put to better use. The clips are extremely affordable!!!

In fact the benefits are endless!!

I personally prefer to buy the clips separately and sew on quality Indian human hair rather than the already packaged clip in extensions because at least I know the quality of the hair I’m using and can measure the tracks exactly according to my scalp.

If you are interested in purchasing a pack of these clips here in Naija, pls call 08073589896, also I would keep you updated so you know which shops will be carrying the clips in Lagos. If you are in the States, your local beauty store or Sally's should have them!!

Have more questions about Clip in extensions? Drop a comment and Ill gladly respond!! Thanks for Stopping by, Now that I have spilled my extension secret, you better tell me yours oh!!lol!!

Hiya,
Its time for my favorite aspect of this blog! My objective opinion on what's hot these days as it concerns extensions; weaves and braids!!

WEAVES
This season THE FULL FRINGE is HOT!!

Everyone seems to be rocking a full fringe these days, from celebrities;
Mo Cheddah
Genevieve Nnaji

to super models;
Agbani Dereago
Tyra Banks

to every day ladies!

HOME GIRL; Steph Williams Hart
COUSIN; Tami Lopez

Why I think its HOT; With a full fringe you ALWAYS look put together!! The fringe frames your face and draws attention to your eyes which you can play up for added drama!!

Be warned though if you have a square shaped face, this look might be too hard for you because such a blunt fringe will play up your angular jaw line and make your face look even more square, also if your face is round shaped, a full fringe might emphasize the volume of your face because of its fullness, to avoid this you might want to make your bangs wispy and tapered softly and not just one straight blunt line!

Full Fringes best suit ladies with Oval shaped faces and long faces as it draws attention to their eyes the most and in the case of long faces, it shortens their faces.

Full Fringes are great if you have a big forehead like our girl ‘RiRi (below)
Rihanna

They are a great way to cover it up head wise!lol. For all you extension divas, come out of your usual cycle of fixing a side swept weave or wavy center part weave and try out a Full Fringe!!

FOR BRAIDS; Have you noticed that medium/big sized long 'Bob Marley' braids r making their way back in the hair fashion scene!!Well I have and I love them! Because they are faster to get done and less stress on your natural hair especially your hair line and also they last long and are versatile in styling!! Below are a few ladies and how they are rocking the 'Bob Marley' braids on the red carpet, 2011 style!!

Effortlessly Chic!
BRAIDS PULLED BACK IN A PONYTAIL

Side Swept

You can also wear your big braids woven down like Jada does below;
Hope you have enjoyed this post! feel free, get inspired and re create any of these styles. Weaves and braids are a great way to grow your own natural hair and protect it from the everyday wear and tear but as I have emphasized in previous posts, they must be applied and maintained properly. Thanks for stopping by, please stop by again!!

Hiya,
It's been ages!!! For those of you who have been looking forward to something new from me, please pardon me I have been very busy. Oh well I have finally put a post together dealing with protecting your extensions while you exercise.

If you exercise regularly and you get extensions in your hair you might find them to be irritating, smelly and just not fun!!While I'd recommend you do not get extensions if you are constantly exercising, I have a few recommendations to make having them more bearable!!

My first recommendation is to securely bun your extensions high up on your head using snag free hair ruffles preferably in silk especially if your extensions are long.

Why? well when you exercise you are moving up and down and the constant moving can cause the extensions to pull at your natural hair and cause breakage plus when you leave your hair hanging low not only will your scalp be sweating but the ends of your hair will also be drenched in sweat, become sticky and weighed down!!Not a good look for extensions!

If it is a weave, before you put the hair up in a bun please DETANGLE using a soft bristle brush only. Hard bristle brushes will be too harsh on your hair.

Weekly wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo especially if you have exercised 5times in the week but you must make sure your scalp is COMPLETELY DRY even if it means spending some time under a hooded dryer, then every other day, cowash your hair with just hair conditioner; now that's IF you are exercising that often, if not stick to a weekly cowash/clarifying shampoo regimen.

Do not cover your head with a bandana, hair scarf or any other funky hair piece, all that will do is make your scalp sweat more and cause more clogging of your pores and more dirt and smelliness!! you may use a sweat band but avoid using it on your scalp but let it rest on your upper neck and forehead  it will still serve its purpose or you may use a hair net, it will put your hair in place but the holes in it will allow your hair breathe.

If you have curly extensions on, you may pin curl your hair with bobby pins( check out my protective style;twist out post or see pic below) or braid the hair into big plaits to keep the curls in place.

Your hair is bound to itch you after exercising, so you might want to carry around a spray bottle with a mixture of water and essential oils like olive, almond and castor oil; adding peppermint oil too might help with soothing a very itchy scalp. When you feel the itch, simply spritz some of your mixture on the affected area and 'tap' please do not 'scratch veraciously' lol because you may scar your scalp and get burns if you get a relaxer when you take out the extensions. What the mixture will do is keep your hair soft and manageable even after you have taken the extensions out.

Hope my tips will help you the next time you have extensions on and you want to hop on a thread mill!! Expect more from me on extensions, leave a comment, ask a questions and ill gladly respond!

Thanks for Stopping by,
Dabs

Hiya,
This post is just a quick relaxer update!! Below (grey vest)is a picture of my hair when I got it relaxed in June. Yesterday I got it relaxed after stretching for 9weeks, could have made it 10 but there's a family occasion this Saturday and I gasta have sleek edges, if you know what I mean!! LOL , So that's my hair now in August (green sweat shirt) after my relaxer, about 2inches longer I would say, good progress!! But Im noticing that the hair in my middle back is thinner than the rest of my hair, hmmm!! Need to work on that area asap!! Oh well, that's all for now, I would love to see your pictures too, take pics of your hair each time you get  relaxer and post it on  the naija hair can grow!! group on facebook, you need to join though, join now! can't wait to see your progress!!

Hiya,
Welcome to the month of August! This month I want to focus a little on extensions. I am very aware that they are many ladies' 'Hair life line'  and it is understandable! They are convenient, they keep you looking fresh and put together, they last long, they are very versatile and for some ladies they are the hair they wish they had!!
I get it! But what I don't get is totally abandoning your own natural hair while you have extensions! It is tempting I must say, before I started my hair journey, when my hair was in braids or a weave, my own hair will not taste any kind of moisturizer or oil till the braids or weave came out! Then on the day I take them out, I would just look at the clumps of hair being combed out in dismay as though I was not the cause!

Anyways, I know there might be ladies like I used to be that are just clueless on this issue!! Hopefully this post can help.

The first thing to do prior to getting any kind of extension in your hair be it braids, weaving, weaves, pick and drop, any extension you can imagine is, A DEEP CONDITIONING PROTEIN TREATMENT! Check out my How to Relax Naija Hair Post for more details on this treatment. This treatment is extremely essential whenever your are doing anything strenuous to your hair that's why I recommended it before a relaxer treatment and that's why I recommend it now. The benefits include, infusing your hair with more strength to withstand the pulling and tugging of the extensions, it also gives your hair more moisture and will soften it for easy manipulation while the extensions are being put in. As a result, hair breakage during the extension installation process is greatly minimized.

Now you can go get your extensions! But while you are getting them please make sure your stylist does the following;

She/He moisturizes and seals your hair FIRST before she starts anything,

She/He does NOT use a tiny tail comb to comb through your hair while she makes the parting for your hair style but a wide tooth comb like this;

She /He MUST be conscious of your hair scalp's sensitive spots! I have two sensitive spots on my scalp and any time I got braids and allowed the stylist treat those spots like other parts of my scalp, those spots became even thinner. You have to know your sensitive spots first though (if you have any , most of such spots are around your hairline) and make sure if you need to tell her to hold the hair in such a spot looser then tell her or you want to 'brush' the hair in that area then do so, DO NOT COMPROMISE!! When the hair starts to thin out and go bald in that spot it will be only you facing the embarrassment.

You know that thing stylists do with braids where they go through strands of the braids and trim the hair sticking out with scissors? Tell He/She to STOP! most times the hair being trimmed so the braids look 'neat' is your natural hair!!If the braider cannot braid hair without it sticking out then he/she is not good enough, leave the hair the way it is or risk having randomly chopped hair ends!

Hair's Done! What next?
 For weaves, please make sure the hair you leave out is not abandoned by you! moisturize and seal it daily especially if you want to keep using heat to blend in your hair with the weave, keep that to the minimum though.
You will also need a spray bottle like this;
 In this bottle, you will need to mix some water, glycerin and essential oils like olive or castor oil; shake shake shake!!This bottle will be your hair buddy until you get your extensions out. Each day you will need to spray this mixture on your own hair.

With braids,

Concentrate on the roots of the braids and massage the mixture into your scalp daily!

With a weave,

 Lift the tracks up and spray the mixture on your natural hair and massage the exposed hair daily! You can avoid spraying the front of your hair left for blending the tracks because, the water in the mixture will frizz your hair out and make blending difficult.

With braids, weekly  moisturize and seal the actual braids to keep your own hair in the braids in good shape especially when its time to take them out. Unfortunately you cannot moisturize and seal with weaves except if you just have a few tracks of weave in your hair and the rest is your own hair, then you can moisturize and seal the hair left out.

*Remember; ALWAYS use products in moderation!!

So when's a healthy time to take out your extensions?
Have you ever left your extensions still they start forming whitish stuff(dirt) at the root of your hair, some girls pass by you and the wind blows and oh my!!you have to hold your breath!!! Their hair stinks big time you are instantly embarrassed for them!!lol!! Don't be a victim of worn out hair extensions! Please when your braids or weaves become loose, smelly or sweaty then the time has come! Take 'em out!! You can wash them if you can't be bothered to take them out sha, but most times after you wash extensions they become weak and won't last any longer.

When you take them out, DON'T COMB until you do one round of moisturizing and sealing your hair and then spray enough of that mixture from the spray bottle before you comb and detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb. then follow with a another deep conditioning protein treatment and then wash out! Your hair should be back in shape, if you follow these simple steps!! Extensions done properly are a good way to transition to natural hair so all you wannabe natural sistahs out there this post is also for you!

Hope this post is helpful, stay tuned for more posts on extensions!!

Ciao,
Dabs!
