Hiya,
How is everyone doing!! Hope well!! Best believe that I have been experimenting with my hair since my big chop!! I have not had short hair as an adult and I am still in a bit of a shock but I'm making the most of it!!

Here's a quick recap of my first week as a full Naturalista!!

So after my big chop I couldn't bare to deal with my hair- The shock of short hair was too much for me and I wore a wig until Saturday when I took the picture collage I used to announce my big chop...

Sunday came and I put my hair in an Updo- I was surprised I could force my hair into two buns!!lol

Monday and Tuesday, your girl decided to rock a twist out at the front of her hair and packed the back into a bun-

On Wednesday I did a Bantu Knot out, put a few perm rods at the back-

Saturday- I finally deep conditioned by hair, I did a moisture treatment at Savvy Chic Hair Beauty Hub, it felt gooooodddd!!

Sunday came around and I flat twisted my hair the night before and unraveled, put my hair in a half up/half down do-

We went for a party later on in the day and I wanted a more sophisticated looking do, so I made an updo-

I recorded a video tutorial on how I created this hairstyle, please watch here-

These products below have been my daily styling squad through out the week!!

coconutoil, kuicare hairmist, beautiful textures leave in conditioner, aunt jackies flaxseed elongating gel, aunt jackies don't shrink leave in, kinky curly custard, spray bottle with water & glycerine, bobby pins (lots of them), sectioning clips, baor bristle brush, JBCO!!

LENGTH CHECK TIME!!
This time around I will not be obsessing over length but it'll be good to have pictures to look back on when my hair grows longer!!

4 INCHES IT IS THEN :)

That's all for now ladies, I have a few more styles I want to try!! Also expect a few product reviews on the products I listed above!!

Anyone tried any of them before? Feel free to comment below!

Thanks for Stopping by!

Hiya,
I just posted a video on Instagram that was meant to be on Youtube!!(Long tings :P) it's a hair mask I've wanted to do for ages because my hair ALWAYS feels great afterwards.

View pictures screen shot from the video.

I simply scooped out the avocado from its skin mashed it and mixed in two table spoons of pure honey and added a spritz of water/glycerin detangler until it became a paste.

Massaged the paste into my hair strands from root to tips, wrapped it and went under the steamer for 30 mins.

The results after washing my hair was nothing short of incredible!!! My hair which is 5 MONTHS POST RELAXER by the way felt sooooo amazing!!!!!

Now to the BENEFITS

1) Moisturizes Hair

Due to heat styling, chemical treatments, environmental pollution, and even exposure to wind and sun, many people struggle with hair that is dry, damaged and weak. Avocado is like a superhero for dry hair. Chock full of vitamins A, D, E and B6, avocado is also high in proteins, amino acids, magnesium, folic acid, copper and iron.
The oils in avocados are one of the few that can penetrate the cuticle and actually moisturize hair.
The monounsaturated fatty acid content in avocado oil is higher than extra virgin olive oil— one of the main reasons it is so good for your hair. When applied directly in a hair mask, monounsaturated fats can moisturize, nourish and strengthen hair strands. This protects your hair from damage and leaves it looking radiant and healthy.
The monounsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, and high levels of antioxidants like vitamin E in avocados are well absorbed into our scalp and hair shafts. This not only has a highly moisturizing and protective effect against environmental stressors and damage, it may also stimulate new growth and help unclog blocked follicles.

2) Promotes Hair Growth

Though most of us would like our hair to grow faster, few of us actually know what causes slow hair growth. We think whatever rate our hair grows at must be what we’re stuck with. But this is not the case.  Hair growth is a fragile metabolic process that we can assist or stall depending on a variety of factors.
Nutritional deficiency is one of the most common reasons for slow hair growth. If you’re not eating enough or not eating the right food, soon you will start to notice that your hair looks dull and lifeless and doesn’t grow as fast as it used to. Our bodies need the right fuel, in the right amounts, to work properly—including protein, vitamins, minerals.
Hormones influence the rate at which your hair grows, as well. Pregnancy, menopause, hormone replacement procedure, thyroid issues, and even oral contraceptives can all alter your hair’s appearance, texture, and rate of growth.
Also on the list of slow hair growth culprits are stress, lack of sleep, smoking, and overindulging in coffee. (A little coffee can actually boost your health but too much interferes with the body’s ability to absorb minerals such as iron and magnesium).
Finally, with harsh or frequent chemical hair treatments—such as relaxing, bleaching or perming hair—we can be our own worst enemy. These styling processes can not only make your hair lifeless, damaged, and prone to breakage but can also seriously stunt hair growth.
Don’t panic! You don’t need to turn your life upside down to help your hair grow faster.
Avocados are high in vitamins B and E, which work at the cellular level to protect and strengthen hair. Vitamin E helps repair damage on the scalp, which may slow or prevent hair growing. Vitamin B is essential for hair growth. Avocado locks moisture into hair cells, nourishes hair cells, and strengthens hair roots, shaft and strands.

3) Prevents Dandruff

Men and women of all ages can experience dandruff. Dandruff is caused by massive flaking of dead skin tissues, when dead skin is shed from a dry, extremely oily or microbe-infected scalp. The result is redness, itching, flaking and irritation. In an attempt to restore moisture, the scalp produces excess sebum, which then blocks the hair follicles and leads to bacterial and fungal infections.
Not all causes of dandruff are medical but scalp psoriasis (a skin condition that causes rapid skin cell development), seborrheic dermatitis (similar to scalp psoriasis), and eczema (similar to scalp psoriasis but much more chronic), are common. As always, it’s important to talk to your doctor about any medical condition or sudden changes in scalp or hair health.
Stress and diet can trigger or contribute to dandruff, so you’ll want to make sure you’re caring for your whole body and not simply your head! Regular exercise such as yoga or Pilates can help keep both body and mind relaxed.
Washing your hair on a regular basis, sticking to one shampoo, and choosing a mild shampoo that is suitable for your hair type will help prevent dandruff. You also want to keep your scalp moist—dandruff loves a dry scalp!
When it comes to moisture, look no further than the avocado. This miracle fruit seems custom made to keep our bodies and hair buttery soft. Avocado oil helps rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp. A rich source of proteins, amino acids and vitamins, avocado helps soothe the scalp and promotes long, strong, healthy hair growth.

4) Revitalizes Hair

We’ve all been there. One day we look at our hair and realize it has lost its shine, bounce, and softness. Why? Where did it go? And, more importantly, how can we get it back?
An average person has about 100,000 hairs on their scalp. (Redheads have less, about 90,000, while blonds have more, about 140,000). Each hair shaft has three layers, two inner layers protected by the cuticle (outside layer), and each hair grows an average of nine inches a year. On average, we shed about fifty to one hundred hairs per day.
If our cuticle layers are in good health, the layers of the cuticle are so tightly bound together that the light is able to reflect off the cuticle. This is what makes your hair shine! But when the cuticle layers are not tight together, your hair will feel coarse and brittle. This makes hair absorb light and not reflect, which gives a surface appearance of dull and lifeless hair.
Along with regular trimming, use of mild shampoo, and resisting the urge to over-style, one of the ways we can put shine and life back into our hair is with a regular avocado hair mask.
Culled from HERE
Wishing you all a blessed week ahead!!

Hiya,
So I've been meaning to put this post up since my last trip to the US when I went to Sally's Beauty and took a long stare at their wall of hair shears....

There were hair shears ranging from a couple of dollars to as much as $200 plus dollars!! I had to ask one of the sales personnel there why this was the case, was it a matter of the more expensive the hair shear the better the cut? So if I got the most expensive shears on there, would I have no split ends for like a year?

Her response was insightful, she said shears were priced based on a few different factors, for one the blades of the shears could determine the price as some are made of steel, iron, have features like non- rust, some can be sharpened others not so much, some are serrated, others are not and this determines the sharpness of the shears, she also said some shears have a gap between them that makes cutting less precise and can lead to blunt cuts instead of sharp cuts (which are better), so she pointed out that the sharper shears were more silent when you cut and if you hear loud snappy noises as you snip through your hair, your hair shear may not be as sharp as should be which isn't the best.

She also said the handle of the hair shears also determined the price, some handles are plastic, some metal, some were more flexible and more gentle on the knuckles and fingers of hair stylists than others, so as a hair stylist who would be doing a lot of cuts and such, you might have to pay more money to get hair shears that you can comfortably use for long periods of time.
What's the importance of knowing all this? Well a lot of us have caused more split ends on our ends than necessary because we failed to use the right hair shears (heck I've used manicure scissors to cut my hair before( this was a loooong time ago), having regular trims is an essential part of a healthy hair regimen, scraggly ends are not cute, you eventually loose your length in the process and to get regular trims you MUST use the right hair shears, so I ask again, please tell me about your shears....based on what I wrote above, do you think they measure up...feel free to comment below in the comments section.

P.S How's the 6 inches of Growth Challenge going? Any updates? We have passed the half way mark, whose hair is 3 inches longer, who has suffered a set back, comment below, let's catch up!! Remember the winner of the challenge gets $100 cash at the end of the year!!

Hiya,
So I am back with a post elaborating on the issue I dealt with most of last year...most of you have asked me how the breakage happened and so I have decided to elaborate more on how the line of demarcation can affect length retention when you are dealing with different hair textures.

So when you decide you want to go texlaxed or natural, you start to deal with different hair textures, the straighter texture at the ends and the natural texture...the point where the two textures meet is the point of demarcation and the line of demarcation right across your hair.

That point is very very sensitive and when your ends are not managed properly it can break off like mine did;

To deal with that line of demarcation, you can either choose to cut the straight hair off and deal with textured section ( save yourself the headache).

But to actually deal with that line here are a few tips I wish I stuck to last year...

Get your ends trimmed, I mentioned that in my prior post..this will prevent the ends from splitting up the hair shaft and lead to indiscriminate breakage...

Moisturize your line of demarcation like crazzzyyy!! After you moisturize and seal your entire hair, I suggest a spray bottle mixed with water and oils or aloe vera gel(Which I am LOVING!!!) and spray that section a little extra and seal with oil.

Finally my advice will be to NOT ever deal with your hair when its wet!!! I used to try and detangle my hair with a wide tooth comb when I got out the shower and in my bid to smooth the hair out I did not know I was causing undue breakage at that point of demarcation...apparently even WIDE TOOTH COMBS can cause breakage when you are dealing with wet hair that has different textures...so my advice is to smooth out your hair as you rinse with water, moisturize the damp hair and allow the hair to air dry to like 80% before you proceed to detangle and manipulate it...

So in sum, to avoid breakage at the line of demarcation keep the manipulation of your hair to the absolute minimum or just cut off the straighter texture to have a uniform texture...

P.S Ladies its one week left to send in your entry for the 6 inches of growth challenge...enter for the chance to win the coveted title and $100!!

Hiya,
Been a min!! Hope you are all well. In my post about heat protectants, I mentioned that I have been quite intrigued about all the scientific words which in the past I used to term gibberish; words usually listed  on the ingredient list of hair/beauty products. Upon my research, I stumbled on the common debate on whether or not 'cones' were good or bad for hair, this lead me to researching more in depth about cones and 2 cones stood out, I will list these two cones, their properties and why one should actually look forward to seeing them in your hair products because they are scientifically  proven to be great for hair!!

They are Cyclomethicone and Dimethicone...before we go further what exactly are cones....they are man made compounds referred to as silicone specifically created mainly for hair, beauty, household products.

Cyclomethicone is a volatile, oil soluble liquid silicone that makes the skin feel soft and smooth and prevents frizz...How?

Because it evaporates, is colourless, odourless, has the consistency of water and is a great solvent for organic based oils, leaving the hair/skin feeling smooth and non-greasy.

Cyclomethicone is deposited at the surface of the hair or skin and spreads uniformly over the surface, coating the hair shaft or skin. It also is non-irritating to skin, the fact that it evaporates in hair care products means that it will help your hair dry faster, thus it is mostly found in anti frizz products like sprays and serums.

How it works is that when it is contained in a product, it helps to evenly distribute the product especially while combing then it delivers the active ingredients to your hair, then evaporates, which decreases your drying time.

In skin care products, it works as a barrier ingredient, emollient, lubricant and skin protectant from the elements.

Dimethicone on the other hand tends to stay on the surface of the hair or skin, forming a coating that protects your skin, but seals all the good stuff you've put into your lotion or conditioner to your skin or hair.

It does not evaporate and isn't used in water based products but rather used with emulsified products or oil based products because of this, it is great in maintains shine and manageability for hair. It also

It is also great in protecting the hair and skin from the harsh elements, helps porous hair stand up to humidity while helping it retain moisture.Find it mainly in hair puddings, moisturizers and souffles.

The only qualms with cones is that they cause  build-up on the hair and scalp because they are often not water-soluble. This is why clarifying shampoos are so important when using "cone" filled products.
So there you have it, a little more knowledge for your arsenal...what new things have  you been learning about hair? Feel free to spill below.

Thanks for stopping by,

Hiya,
Hope you are all well! Two months left and the year is over!!! Who is retaining length!!! We will soon know the verdict!

Back to my topic, who like me has felt using an oil to seal your ends before you apply heat(blow drying, straightening, roller setting) is enough? You can imagine my reaction when I was browsing instagram the other day and came across a post that simply read in bold letters- OILS ARE NOT HEAT PROTECTANTS! I was like what?!

Went straight to consult with my friend google and to my greatest shock, the online resources were all saying the same scientific proven facts- using hair oils alone will NOT protect your hair from heat damage!

You see for the longest time after reading about smoke points of oils and how the higher the smoke point(meaning-the temperature at which an oil begins to break down into glycerols and free fatty acids and inevitably produces smoke) the better the oil's ability to tolerate heat, so for example Grapeseed oil and Olive oil have a smoke point of 485F and Avocado oil's smoke point is as high as 520F thus they have been advocated as great oils to prevent heat damage SOURCE.

 So you'd think that'd be enough protection no? NO!Apparently it's not enough for the following reasons;

Every good heat protectant should help prevent full heat transfer to the cortex of hair, preventing degradation of the protein bonds that largely lead to split ends and breakage.
While oils are great as lubricants, apparently they slow down drying so that if you are using say a flat iron, you have to pass it through more times when using oils and could end up doing MORE damage than protection!!

You want to know what a good heat protector should have?

1. Silicones- yeah cones, I know?!! Apparently Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone are must have ingredients in any good heat protectant because they are both thin, water proof and heat resistant man made compounds that when applied on the hair strands, coat the strands then evaporate while allowing the oils and nutrients on the strands to absorb, Demithicone is also known to have detangling properties- SOURCE

2. Hydrolized protein/silk amino acids- heat breaks down the protein bonds of our hair strands as mentioned before so a good heat protectant should have protein fill in any broken protein bonds and strengthen the hair to withstand heat damage.

3.Glycerin or any form of humectant to help attract moisture to the hair as the heat is being applied.

4. Propylene Glycol is also a chemical compound that attracts moisture to the hair strands.

5. Cetrimonium Chloride to increase tensile strength- SOURCE

6. Then your carrier oils for all their nutritional goodness!

These above products should be listed among the top 5 to 6 ingredients on any good heat protectant's ingredient list.

I did my home work and found this to be true, most heat protectants have most of the ingredients listed above; CHI silk Infusion, Tresemme Heat Tamer and in Naija I've found Organics Olive oil extra virgin smoother and polisher serum
Of the 6 must haves mentioned above, it has Dimethicone as the first ingredient, it also contains Phenyl Trimethicone, olive oil, hydrolized oat protein and silk amino acids #winning!!! I think it costs less than a thousand bucks for this 6oz bottle so that's a plus...Now there is NO EXCUSE again, a perfect heat protectant can be found in Naija and I dare say other parts of Africa!! European and American residents, you are spoilt for choice and have no excuse.

If you decide you want to use heat directly on your dry hair with no protection whether its blow drying, flat ironing, thonging, crimping, rollersetting....what you are doing to your hair is what too much sun does to leaves, it dries the heck out of them, so that when you touch dry leaves they simply crumble to pieces....Do you want crumbled hair? I don't think so, note to self I vow not to use heat on my hair ever again without a proper heat protectant!!

Of course the safest option will be avoiding heat totally but when you want to give into the craving of silky straight hair or bouncy robust curls, then you know what to do!!

P.S You guys, I have been really into chemicals and stuff lately, next week I'll dedicate an entire post to all that I've learnt, till then have a wonderful weekend!!

Thanks for stopping by!!
