Without much ado, here are the contenders for my $100 gift and I will pick 2 other runner ups for goody bags from Savvy and Chic hair beauty hub!!

Hiya ladies,
Compliments of the season...I am in full holiday mode and loving it...surrounded by my entire family makes me so giddy....we just stay up and gist and gist...anyways back to this post!

During one of my gisting sessions with my sister I showed her these pics-

She was like what's that and I go, 'my hair, I cut it by mistake'. She proceeded to scream 'Nooooooooo!!'. I told her I was still livid as to how this happened so I didn't know if I should blog about it but since this blog is like my hair diary where I share everything about my hair, my highs and lows, I have decided to share this sad sad incident of how I cut about 6 inches and like 12 inches respectively of random places on my hair.

So this is what happened, remember when I got the box braid bob crotchet that was black and blonde in front? Well when it was being installed there were some stubborn ones that refused to solidly knot at the base because the braids were too big, some I left alone but there were these two strands I forced to knot because the hair used was stiff expressions. Fast forward loosening day, I was able to unknot most of the braids with ease and casually did so on my bed half asleep, then it got to these two stubborn ones in the middle and I struggled, gave up, picked up a pair of scissors and thought I was cutting just above the knot...snip snip, the braids came off and I sighed in relief.

Proceeded to take out the corn rows, that's when the horror happened, by the time I reached the middle I saw hair follow my hand....my mind was racing, but I didn't use any extensions to corn row my hair I thought to myself....don't tell me IT'S MY HAIR!!!!! This was even the six inches shorter hair that I had cut, by the time I got to the very middle more hair followed my hand and it was MUCH LONGER!! I screamed so loud that I made my sons panic and start crying, my hubby ran upstairs asking what happened and saw me cradling my hair like a child and just shook his head....left to him I'd just be packing my hair, no protective styling because when things go wrong he gets the brunt of my complains.

Anyways, I eventually calmed down and looked closely enough to see that the hair I cut off was hidden and didn't affect my length though it affected the fullness of my hair which was quite annoying...I was so upset that I vowed never to do crotchet extensions again but alas, few weeks down the line here I am sporting a mambo/Havana twist crotchet hair style....

The only difference is this hair is super light weight and stretchy so unknotting will be a breeze plus I will be very careful and take the hair out in front of a mirror and not slumped on a bed!!

Well that's all for the biggest hair blunder I had this year...a relatively perfect year hair wise until this happened...but that's life, you take what you can from the experience and keep it moving!! Those who entered the 6 inches of Growth challenge, please send in your entries....I've received a few but not enough to have a full post...unfortunately if you didn't enter the challenge at the start of the year and sent me comparison pics, while I applaud your results, they won't be eligible as part of the contenders for the actual challenge. I look forward to receiving more entries and announcing the winner of this year's growth challenge.

As usual thanks for stopping by!

Hiya,
So as promised, I mentioned that my next post will be urging all those who signed up for the 6 inches of growth challenge to send in their before and after pictures....soooo the time has come....send them in ladies! If you don't have your before picture, just follow this link-HERE and get your picture.

Remember the pictures should be very clear and an honest representation of your growth if not you stand a chance of being disqualified. Please also send them in preferably in a side by side collage.

Below are Peace's before and after pictures...the difference is clear,  look at all that body!!

The winner will get $100 and the runner ups get goody bags courtesy Savvy and Chic Hair Beauty Hub.

I won't announce voting until I have a handful of results...so if you have for some reason dropped out of the challenge( I don't know why you would considering the fact that you don't know how other contestants fared over the year and you might still be in the running) but if you have, please send me an email informing me.

I look forward to crowning this year's 6 INCHES OF GROWTH WINNER :)

Good luck ladies and have a great week, dear followers!!

Hiya,
So the year is almost over can you believe it?! Where did all that time go?!! Anyways I've been keeping myself accountable heat wise all year long and used heat as sparingly as I could...so I'm here to present my report card in the form of what I've coined 'My 2015 Heat Chronicle'...after I share mine, promise to share yours below and let's see how we have all fared, Deal?! Deal!!

Blow Drying-

2 times- I blow dried my hair twice this year, recently actually...once, a week before I did my crotchet braids- and last weekend after my fresh texlax at the hub...the rest of the year I usually just air dried.

Roller Set-

1/2 I would say Nil but I remember rolling my hair sometime in the middle of the year and going under the dryer for like 20 minutes before I had to rush out to attend to something (I forget) so I took my hair home with the rollers in it...curls dropped the next day :(

Straighteners/ Thongs/ Crimps-

4 times-These heat tools are the worsttttt but oh sooo tempting!! I like to hide them as far away as I can!! You know when you have so much new growth and your hair is just so thick at the base and feels sooo unmanageable and there's shrinkage(for us the Texlax) you can be sooo tempted to just want to stretch your hair a little  even if it's just so your hair can lie flat instead of puffing up!! Well this year I fell 4 times- The first in April on relax day, then in June I straightened just the back I left out for the Salon Day out, relax day again end of July and my latest relax day in October....it became a relax day ritual because I was eagerly length checking but now I've seen that I progressed I'll have to lay off these tools if my ends have a chance at surviving....it also helps that I always use heat protecting serums as well as ceramic coated styling tools.

Deep Conditioning-

Over 30 times!! Technically this isn't Heat as it's more steam but I'm driving at a point here. There are about 52 weeks in a year and we have roughly 10 weekends left....meaning about 42 weekends have gone by of the 42 weeks/weekends I deep conditioned my hair with a Hair Steamer almost every weekend at my salon and I can attest to the GREAT benefits of regular DC's ladies!! It just makes your hair more manageable!! Your Hair is brittle and breaking off- Increase your DC's, you are not retaining length- increase your DC's, you feel your hair and it's dry and feels like hay- Increase your DC's!! It makes a world of difference...the only thing is that it doesn't have lasting effects, so the more regular it's done, the better the results! Kabish?!

It was a struggle to come to terms with the fact that MY HAIR HATES (DIRECT) HEAT!! Since I accepted this fact and have focused on keeping my moisture levels high whether it's from mid week co- washes, deep conditioning, moisturizing and sealing, I have really seen the quality of my hair improve. You too can keep a Heat Chronicle and tweak it according to what your hair needs...

What other ways can we use heat to our hair and in what ways did you stay heat free this year...feel free to share below.

Have a great weekend People!! If in Lagos, come by the Hub for a DC if you need one, just call 08090613325, I'll be there for a few hours on Saturday :)

Hiya,
How's everyone doing? I'm sure from my heading y'all know I'm a happy bunny!! I got to do my last texlax for this year and I'm very pleased with the results!

I used Hawaiian Silky Argan oil relaxer and spent a total of just 12 minutes texlaxing, I also added Avocado oil to my relaxer as I really didn't want my hair over processed...

THE RESULTS
Even with all the trimming and dusting I have done this year, I was able to retain length, started the year at just past line 3 grazing 4(APL) after I had to cut most of my hair due to the inverted V breakage I experienced once again!!
OCT '15- BSL BABY!!

I pampered the nape area, made sure my ends stayed trimmed(every time I relaxed) and dusted(once a month) and kept up with my hair regimen and I am very happy that my hair is now grazing line 7(BSL). It feels lush, the ends look great and my nape hair is doing well.

JAN '15

OCT '15

I have layers though as the top/ front part of my hair has gotten more hair chopped off than the rest due to the fact that I saw more split ends there. Moving forward, by my next touch up in 2016( God willing), I should be full BSL with lush healthy ends. It is from there we will all have to hold hands, sing Kumbaya and pray!! Because unfortunately for me something always goes wrong to set me back once my hair is that long!!

BUT Not this time (waves fingers in the air)!! I honestly feel that I've caused the set backs in the past because I tend to neglect my ends when my hair is longer and trim less but as I have seen that I still retained length even if I was trimming regularly this year, moving forward I'll keep trimming and those ends will stay babied!!

See Pic comparisons with low light;

JAN '15-  GRAZING LINE 4 (APL)
OCT '15- GRAZING LINE 7 (BSL)

I was looking through pictures from the start of this year and in this pic I took below on the 17th of January, my nape hair was about  8.5 inches....

Last night, I measured my nape hair, it's about 14 inches people!!

(forgot to take a pic with the tape, will update this post when I do) That's progress right there!!

Like with every journey, there will be ups and downs, it's just important to have your focus fixated on the end goal, be patient and consistent and results are bound to happen!!

So ladies, who has a testimony to share, who is enjoying progress?? Who needs help with a set back? You know I have been through it all!!! Feel free to comment below!

Hiya,
So I decided to share this email I got from a blog reader as I found it interesting...especially because of her last statement about going natural as I've had a lot of ladies say they are going natural when they encounter such set backs and have wondered if it truly is the remedy...

Good day ma......I'm one of the contenders of the 6 inches challenge, I'm a student and as such I really don't have time for My hair. At the beginning of the challenge I followed a healthy hair regime but when school resumed there was no time again for my hair I just left it and had braids installed once for 3 weeks in the whole time in school. Now school is on break and I really don't know where to start from, My hair is really dry and I think it's as a result of the relaxer I've been using (a no lye relaxer ) My scalp is very sensitive so I can't switch to a lye relaxer and I've relaxed My hair just twice this year, the first time I did it myself cause most Haiti Salons don't know good to apply relaxers, the second time I told the hair dresser what to do and she really didn't get it...now I'm thinking of going natural because I can't self relax and no one really seems to get it.My hair is already really due.thanks alot

MY REPLY-
Hi,
Thanks for your mail and for entering the challenge...I don't think the relaxers which from your mail you have used just twice are the cause of the dryness you are experiencing. You haven't mentioned anywhere where you deep condition your hair regularly and it still stays dry...deep conditioning makes a world of difference when managing new growth because the hair strands are infused with great benefits from the treatments applied on the hair but these effects last just 3/5 days max and the wear and tear of the environment plus styling like braids etc take the hair back to its original state of dryness but if done regularly, overtime the hair strands adapt and become stronger and less prone to reverting...it's like having a store house, the more you put in it the less likely it is going to get empty even if say a cockroach or rat is in there chipping at its contents....in essence what I advice is to take your focus off blaming relaxing, going natural will not make your hair less prone to dryness, if that's why you are going natural, if it's because of the relaxing process then I do agree that lye relaxers are harsher on the scalp but if you base your scalp with Vaseline and work fast you will hardly suffer any burns, I have a post on relaxing-http://naijahaircangrow.blogspot.com.ng/2011/06/how-to-relax-naija-hair.html

heres a link on texlaxing- http://naijahaircangrow.blogspot.com.ng/2014/05/my-stretch-is-over-tips-on-how-to-self.html
Another link- http://naijahaircangrow.blogspot.com.ng/2012/09/texlaxing-effectively.html

Focus more on improving the quality of your strands and making them resistant to dryness, brittleness and breakage and that's all what regular deep conditioning treatments provide...you have mentioned how busy you are that's why I haven't touched on a daily hair routine which helps to back up the deep conditioning...if you can squeeze out time every other day to moisturize and seal your hair root to tip, in between deep conditioning, you will also see the quality of your hair improve.

Hope my reply helps.

Happy Sallah to all the Muslim readers out there!!

Hiya,
Today's topic is all about deep conditioning which is an integral aspect of being on a healthy hair journey. When I first started my hair journey, I did overnight DCs very regularly, basically applied the DC mix to my dry hair, massaged it in, covered hair with a nylon bag and a silk cap and went to bed, the logic was that my natural body heat produced from wearing the nylon bag or shower cap will open my hair shaft and allow the strands absorb the products and the longer the better.

The process I described above is essentially what steam treatments do but in a much shorter time, the steamer produces steam, your hair is covered and the hair shaft swells and opens up allowing all the product you've applied sip into the hair, all this usually in twenty to thirty minutes....

As I got busier and more prone to just tiredly falling on my bed after a long day with less time or energy to sit and apply any kind of concoction to my hair, I decided to do my research, would it be less effective if I stopped overnight DCs or DCing for long hours and just stick to making out time to get a steam treatment at Savvy & Chic Hair Beauty Hub?

Well here are my findings...
Generally speaking, increased time and temperature increases the amount of product adsorbed into the hair shaft. This is because the hair has a maximum absorption time for surfactants (surfactants diffuse in water and adsorb at interfaces between air and water or at the interface between oil and water, in the case where water is mixed with oil examples include emulsifiers), hydrolyzed protein, silicones etc which are usually found in DC conditioners and their properties allow them to be absorbed into the hair shaft within seconds of applying the conditioner.

If left on the hair for longer, the amount will in general double within 10 minutes. If left on for another 10-20 minutes, the amount will increase by another 60-100% of the mark set at 10 minutes. However after 30 minutes from initial application, there are no more increases in adsorption to the hair. The reason for this is that the hair conditioner simply has no more places on the hair where it can stick to as all gaps which it can plug and all surfaces where it can attach are occupied.

Specifically speaking, absorption time is affected by the ingredients in your DC mix and their unique behaviors when applied to your hair, for example the PH level of the DC conditioner should generally be between 6-7 for the conditioner to work well to increase adsorption to hair. Below and above this range, the behavior of the conditioner can become a little more erratic and results may vary that's why some conditioners work well as DCs and you can feel an instant change to the texture and manageability of your hair after use and others leave your hair feeling BLEH!!

The different quantities of ingredients also affects absorption. For example, a conditioner which contains 0.2% hydrolysed protein will be able to leave about 20% more protein on the surface of hair compared to one which has 0.1%.  The result is more dramatic for surfactants with a 0.2% conditioner able to adsorb 80% more to the surface than a conditioner with 0.1% surfactant.

The reality is, manufacturers will not tell you how much of an ingredient is contained in the jar, so you have to try the product and trust that your hair will tell you whether the product has too much or too little of the ingredient you are looking for same with adding other natural concoctions like honey, yoghurt, mayonnaise, eggs etc.

Now the aim of my research was to find out if my hair was missing anything by doing SHORT DC's and I'm glad that the general answer is an empathic NO but does that make LONG DC's wrong? I don't think so, if for any reason I've had my DC on my head all day on a Saturday because I was too busy around the house, have I somehow ruined my wash day experience, I think not...it basically means that after the stipulated time of absorption and my hair absorbed all it could, the rest of the time my hair was just sitting pretty waiting to get rinsed out, it's like taking biotin or any multi vitamins for that matter, the body absorbs what it needs and the rest is sent away to be disposed through the toilet...so don't beat yourself up if you happen to forget a treatment on your hair for more than thirty minutes and don't beat yourself up either if all the time you had to spare for your treatment was thirty minutes....hope you get my drift (don't send me emails with the subject * WAILING FOR MY HAIR DABS *Crying profusely rolling on the ground, my DC was in my hair for 1 hour Ahhhhhhhhhh* LOL).

And on that note, I'll be heading to the hub for my 30 minutes DC this evening as that's all the time I have to spare- No more guilt, Yayyy!!

Who's giving her hair a treat this weekend?? C'mon it's just 30 minutes, make out time....feel free to share your concoctions below!!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing, hope the weekend. This weekend I decided to finally open my tub of Cow Butter graciously given to me ages ago by a blog reader from Kastina.

I had it stored away in my deep freezer all this while and took it out prior to using it for a few hours and left it to thaw, when it was thawed, I scooped some out (it smells like sour milk/yogurt ) mixed it with Hair trigger in Vanilla pound cake to mask the smell and added some olive oil conditioner and some drops of oil.

Not the prettiest sight...
 I applied the mix on my dry hair;

Saran wrapped and went under the steamer, washed my hair after like an hour and it felt really great...Manshanu (Cow butter) is a heavy oil based butter and from my research its oil content is great for detangling and deep conditioning and it did just that...

Will I be trying this treat again? Hell ya!! However, I will use much less of it next time as I realized a little goes a long way and the greasy feeling and smell all over me is just gross.

Who gave their hair a treat this weekend?
Hiya,
How's everyone doing? Hope well...if you follow a me on Instagram, I have to apologize after promising to put up a wig post on the blog over the weekend but unfortunately I'm on a short vacation and only came along with my Ipad and for some weird reason my Ipad can't pull up pictures stored on the camera roll!! Bloggers out there, any of you experienced this before?  What's the solution, please share below if you have one.

Anyways moving along, I decided to put up an Ask Dabs post that wouldn't require pictures, basically I'm sharing mails and replies I've gotten recently, if you've asked any of the questions below, hope my answers help.

First Up;

From Dadah-
Hi there. My sister introduced me to your blog and I and my family are addicted! However, since I started, my hair has detoriorated badly. It is now so dry, stiff, and very matted. I do the avocado mask,LOC EASE,shea butter moisturising, all to no avail. My hair worsens by the day. It is natural and was shoulder length. I bought pure coconut oil, but none of the products advised have been useful. I have used aloe vera, honey, coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, avocado, none worked.  Any words of wisdom?  Thank you.

Dadah.

Hi Dadah,
Thanks for your mail, from your mail, I'm hearing a lady who is trying to figure out what works for her hair which is fine but if you try too many things at a time too soon you do not allow your hair enough time to adjust to the effects of the products/remedies being tried. My advice is to try the LOC EASE method one more time, I actually adjusted the method more to the LCO method, try a liquid based product like a detangler, leave in conditioner or aloe Vera gel, cream which is a water based moisturizer with a thicker consistency that will help keep the hair moist and then seal with a light weight oil like olive, grape seed or  coconut oil. Try this day in day out for a month and feel free to get back to me. You might also need to trim your ends as they might be dry and full of split ends, for deep conditioning since you are dealing with dryness, just stick to a cholesterol based conditioner for starters and see how your hair responds.

Regards,
Dabs

From Hannah
Hi Dabs
Please advise me urgently.  I just loosened by box braid of about 6 wks old. It's so tangled that I cannot comb it. I have sprayed detangler, used the glycerine and water mixture, put leave in ... but still I can't comb through. What can I do. Don't want my hair to break off.
Thanks.

Hi Hannah,
Thanks for your mail. I think the extensions were kept for too long, I don't know what you ended up doing but next time that happens you can apply conditioner directly on the dry knots and tangles and allow the hair to absorb them and spritz water on the sectioned hair while you detangle gently with a wide tooth comb. As a general guide avoid keeping extensions in your hair for more than a month to avoid tangles.

Regards,
Dabs

From Daniella-
Hey Dabs...my name is Ella and I am a huge fan...been following your blog since late 2013...been trying to follow the hair advice...I used to have APL hair..but now it barely grazes my neck...I've suffered massive hair loss since I started my journey and I don't know why...plsssss I need help...need to know where I am getting it wrong....am a student so that means I have very little cash to spend on hair stuff and I also have very little time as I am a medical student...I find it hard sticking to a routine because I mostly come home exhausted and immediately sleep off...what can I do differently Dabs?...I want hair like yours someday.

Hi Daniella,
Thanks for your mail...you raise two very major common issues which are time and money. Luckily there are many ways to save time and money when on a hair journey. If you look in your fridge, there are quite a few things in there you can use to deep condition your hair- check this post I wrote ages ago on this...http://naijahaircangrow.blogspot.com/2011/07/open-your-refrigerator-it-will-reveal.html. Another advice I would give is to master reading ingredient labels, forget the fancy bottles and popular brands, it's what's inside that matters, you can read through this post to know how to read these labels and choose what works for your hair- http://naijahaircangrow.blogspot.com/2012/02/10-things-to-know-about-pityriasis.html. The brand or price should be your secondary focus as a cheaper conditioner can work as great as an expensive one. Finally try and purchase economy or large bottles of products, my huge tub of Cantu Shea butter which I currently use will definitely last me till next year!! Larger bottles may cost more but you are sure to have them for a while saving you money. As regards time, you don't need to spend that much time getting your hair done, focus on the basics and try hair spritz with spray bottles, they make everything quick and easy.

That's all for now, hope my replies help and I promise to put up the post about the wig as soon as I get back or a solution. Can't wait to share pictures of my new wig! Love it!! Oh and for those interested, the SEPTEMBER IMPORT WINDOW opens tomorrow, for hair/beauty orders, please send me an email- daboju@yahoo.com and I will respond ASAP.

Have a blessed week people!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing?!! Been a while!! Hope those on the 6 inches of growth challenge have not given up yet!! It's about 5 months to go, hang in there ladies!!

Well this post is just an update on my hair, products and styles I have tried lately...

Let's start, shall we!!

My hair has been doing its thing...

I've embraced a lot of 'protective' styling this year, protective being the operative word, with hair extensions, the hairstyles have had little to no impact on my hair line and I don't leave them in for more than a week plus!! I've also been rocking my wigs and loving the break they give my hair which I usually tuck away in big braids for a few days before I start missing my hair again...

Here are a few pictures of my hair lately;

In the above picture, I just took out my knotless braids and loved how it created this wavy twist out look with my hair, unfortunately my hair was dirty so I had to wash it out!

This was the hairstyle I rocked to the 2015 LOC Appreciation Day...I divided my hair in about eight chunky sections, braided the tips and tucked them inside so the chunks looked like free formed locs (don't think I fooled real loc heads with my attempt though!! LOL). But can you see all the texture that I am presently dealing with?!! On one hand I love it, on the other hand it drives me cray cray!!

Freshly detangled, moisturized and sealed hair...also keeping an eye on my ends!!

Last week I tried out Crotchet braids again but I wanted the marley hair twisted into big havanna twists and the tips curled...got this done at the hub- 30 Norman Williams St. Ikoyi Lagos.

Had these in for one week and 3 days and got bored!! Took them out, got a good clarify with a bentonite clay hair mask treatment I got done at the hub;

Made my hair feel really nice and manageable considering it's about 10 plus weeks post relaxer! Will be relaxing it by week 12 that's my limit lately...

Oh and I have not repented from my product junkie ways oh!! It's always like I am looking for the next best thing until I get my fingers burnt!! Arghhh!! I was at Ebeanor just browsing through their cosmetics aisle when this product caught my eyes;

Looking at the bottle, it seemed to have everything going for it, first thing that caught my eye was the TRIPLE MOISTURE LOTION written to the side, I was like yessss, then it had no harsh chemicals also written and the usuals; no petroleum products, no sulfates, parabens etc, checked the ingredients, water was first, glycerin then a bunch of great oils-SOLD!!

Got home and this product that I thought would be light and liquidy and super moisturizing is just all types of wrong on my hair!!! It feels sooooo goooey!! And left some kind of annoying film/coat on my hair like a gel!! Left me so confused!
GOOEY!!!

Anyways, that will teach me!! For now, I am just patiently waiting till relax day in about two weeks!!

So that's my update thus far, how's everyone else doing? Who has tried the above product? Did it work for you? Feel free to share your thoughts below!!

P.S  As for that BLOGVERSARY GIVEAWAY I promised for non- Lagosians in the month of June, I am compiling a bunch of products and I promise to announce it sooon!! Please stay tuned and pray for me- the lack of ginger to blog these days is real!! I don't know why!! But when I do get the chance to sit down and open the blog, start a post...it just flows!! Like I didn't think this post would be this long!! Just pray for me!! LOL

Have a great weekend people!
